  1. Thanks guys. I cannot use bootcamp. So I will have to take the plunge on the mac version. I usually play on pc but I'm relocating and my mac is coming with me, pc following later...and I want this game in these months of only mac gaming. Still it will be a shame when I get the PC back...
  2. Sorry if this common knowledge or answered elsewhere (just cant find it)... I'd like to buy this for mac but also play it on PC...do I have to buy it twice?!?
  3. This thread is just plain backfiring on players. Asking to be carged for improvements that should be on future release is just proving to Battlefront that they can continue their politic of high prices to a very small niche. That's not thhe way, not at all. The concept behind the combat mission series is superb and with some graphical and ui improvements they could sell the game to a wider audience and get the funds to innovate in an area that would really make the game shine, that is AI. Sad or not the way of the market is the only one that can get true innovations...instead of churning out the same game with some tweaks on units and rules and slapping on it a 50$ price tag. No surprise the series is stuck. True, the dev are still alive and the fans are playing and drooling over new projects, me included, but there is no perspective...and that is a shame considering the uniqueness of the game.
  4. Tripps where did u get that nice chart?
  5. Is there a way to change from real time to turns once a campaign has alredy started?
  6. Yes you guys got a point, turns make it way more organized. I just quit using turns in the wrong scenario, it seems.
  7. Lucas I agree...still it seems to me that if you have 150 units in a scenario with three sides with soldiers dying aplenty (soviet doctrine) it becomes a clickfest anyway...and I don't like it at all
  8. The point here is: playing red thunder, especially with the russians you have to juggle many many units (it's not rare to have 100-150 different units). This means having to focus on different sides and give a big quantity of orders. This is all well and nice but I do feel that the normandy setting is more focused on few units and small scenario...which makes for a more fun and approachable experience; especially for a newbie. So my point is that I made the wrong decision opting for Red Thunder as my first game of the series. Are my assumptions correct?
  9. Yes I reckon real mastery in this game is achieved when you win a mission very first try. Following tries you got a big advantage
  10. "assault". Just beaten with a major victory...apparently tigers can be beaten if taken 1:3 in close quarters by t34... But this is a tough one in my opinion...still I have aroumd 10 completed scenarios under my belt, so Id like to hear more experienced points of view here...
  11. Now, bear with me for few second. Scenario: Assault, the usual, I will spend my life on this one till I succeed. The hill is secured. I got two entire platoons on both sides. The hill with the AT gun has been pounded and poses no threat. The fuel depot has been pounded and destroyed I have two T34 on the left tip of the hill 400 waiting for any upcoming german tank; they got good view. I also have 4 antitank team hidden in the trees nearby. 25 minutes to the end everything goes down the drain. A tiger comes by, my T34 miss big time and the Tiger kill them both, then proceeds to exterminate the antitank team. My rage mounts. IA amass forces around the tiger. So I take a scout and call down artillery on that area, using the M1931. M1931 fires and goes completely off target pounding the vicinity of the other hill, the one the player starts by. I got a ton of useless soldiers there...who get completely exterminated. No shot land on the "tiger zone". Cease fire: I get no points for the hill 400 which I occupy entirely...there are maybe a couple of sdkfz nearby but I got both the sides with around men. Ragequit.
  12. Ok I'm officially an idiot, I urge you guys not to bother answering me anymore...
  13. Well this is puzzling... I'm trying to smoke my way on the hill 400 on the Assault Mission...so I assign the smoke mission to my mortars...cannisters rain on the area...but no smoke is popping out... What the hell is going on? Is this some sort of bug? Smoke actually popped out before I installed the patch... that's the only thing I can imagine as the cause of this bizarre happening...
  14. You guys are right. And this is why I love this game: if you don't do it the right way you get punished. What's the right way? More or less the REAL way, which is way more complicated than the RTS abstraction. So if you want to succeed you have to learn much more than the rules of the game, you have to learn the rules of the conflict and the doctrines. Sorry for stating the obvious...
  15. ahah. I did exactly the opposite. Concentrated the arty on the hill, assaulted it up front with lots of casualties, and lost every tank I had putting them 1vs1 against german ones... I guess I have a lot to learn...
  16. Well... small scenario are only three. I don't like Dawn Patrol and Assault seems to me pretty difficult. Also the russian campaign start giving you around 100 units (?!) and the german one around 80... Not a nice learning curve for sure...
  17. Well I like this too, but It's a bit hard... it seems I never have enough arty fot both thsi sides of the hill and the other hill with the AT position. Also my men get killed a ton by the pillbox in front of the hill...and the 3 tanks get easily killed by german armor... Pretty much a nightmare this scenario for me...
  18. I find the unit count in Red Thunder to be a tad too high. How are other games, Normandy and Italy (and maybe Black Sea if it is already known) as for this particular side of the game? Fewer I guess, especially Fortress Italy. Am I right?
  19. Got bogged down by Graviteam Tactics in the last few weeks, now I come here and I see the beauty that Black Sea is... forget fiddling with GT... I will definitely be spending this gaming christmas in the perfect elegance of CM system
  20. George, I apologize for using the word "frustration". I do believe this word is tied to the concept of the game being unfair. Well, It is not. I find the game to be very enjoyable and fair too. The situation you propose in your scenario is a very interesting one. The real point here is that Combat Mission does not pull any punches. One error and you're punished. And that's the way it must be in order to be what it wants to be, a simulation. So the point for me is trying and learning and that's it. The only thing I would have included in the game in some way is some sort of difficulty progression. The campaigns are not easy in the beginning missions and the scenarios are mixed as for difficulty...so I'm having a hard time finding missions tailored to my being a newbie... :-)
  21. Well thanks... still it seems steep to me...the stugs are 3 and spotting them with infantry is no easy task either. I need tha tank fire to cover the infantry advancing but I have problems manouvering my tanks with stug danger still on. Also I hwte thr fact that info dont get passed fast...infantry spot but tanks cant see them so I have to area fire. maybe it's me but red thunder seems to be way more difficult than fortress italy
  22. Uhm how exactly can you clear a Stug in a forest with smg teams? I dont see any AT weapon on them.
  23. I think I will never get this game...it seems to me every mission is almost impossible. In tankovy desant I scout the hell out of the map and I reach the villa ok. Then I have a couple of squad cross the river while I pound the few squad I spotted with tank fire. Then Tank hell starts out as german sort of tanks hidden in forest (grill? Stug?) start to snipe my tanks from the uphill. They are very far away and I spot them only when my tanks are already toasted. One of them destroyed 5 of my tanks in 2 minutes!! My rage is quickly mounting...I love the concept of the game but I have huge problems in getting visibility and I always end up ambushed like in this mission here.
  24. Well, as a matter of fact, sovs only have one mortar...so this leaves the hard work to the suvs...and thats umfortunate cause mg and antitank weapons are on the lookout and a good los is hard to get with these mechanized units. If I set up my mgs they tend to be trounched by entrenched infantry. I find this scenario a very tough nut to crack indeed.
  25. Thanks Ken, nice hints. What does exactly the hide command? I used the slow for reconnaissance but I noticed the troops get tired pretty fast. The inf vs inf problem is somethhing I've notoced too. I did not like at all the shootout in open field that this scenario tend to generate... So in the end I guess I have to use snipers as scouts and keep my inf squqds and machime guns in the back...move them up when the SU have softened the german positions.
