  1. I have the base game and several of the expansions on my iPad. I have to admit, I enjoy the game quite a bit. I play other war/strategy games on my iPad, but BA is definitely one of my favorites. As a mobile game, I find it perfect. "Light" enough to pick up and play at any time, but still giving a decent representation of WWII tactics. It's no in-depth combat simulator, but finds a good mix between realistic and accessible.
  2. It's not precisely what you asked for, but I HIGHLY recommend the (board) wargame "Blood and Roses" by GMT. It covers the Wars of the Roses and is both quite playable and immersive. One of my new favorite games. It gives a real period feel, with armies of heavily armored dismounted knights supported by the ubiquitous longbow and surprising numbers of firearms. It's also quite simple to play solitaire, I do it all the time. As for computer games, maybe Great Battles Medieval? I found it a decent game, but nothing special. Could be worth a shot.
  3. Man, I haven't even been here that long and this is like the third itineration of Steiner that I've run into. He's like the villain of the BF forums, always sneaking back in. How much time do you have "Volksgrenadier"?
  4. I don't have FI so I wouldn't know. But I figured the nice thing about Korea is that there weren't a ton of different exotic vehicle types. ROK had pretty much just Greyhounds, NKPA had BA-64s, T-34s, and SU-76s, China had a mismatch of vintage WWII kit from just about everyone, and US/Britain had almost the same stuff as in WWII. Not a whole lot of new kit. I might try my hand at a Korea map, although it will have to be in BfN. If anyone knows some good map resources for Korea, feel free to post them here.
  5. Lately I've been thinking about a possible Korea mod, as I've been reading a bit about the war. It seems to me like it would be reasonably doable. (Disclaimer: I know nothing about modding in any way, shape, or form.) With a few exceptions, such as the M26/46 Pershing and Centurion, pretty much everything used by all sides exists in some form or another in at least one CM game. I put a short list together of hardware that would be needed. Again, keep in mind I know nothing about modding, but would it be possible to bring the "skins" of vehicles from different games into CMBN? I remember LongLeftFlank using BMP-1s for landing craft in his Pacific Mod, (or at least I think I saw that somewhere) so could the same be done for Normandy? Assuming you could bring in skins from Red Thunder, M4 76mms could make decent T-34s, M10s or maybe Marders could work as SU-76s, and M20 utility cars might serve for BA-64s. You'd need some Korea-esque maps, and it wouldn't be perfect, but would this be a workable idea?
  6. Good find, JK. I know very little about modern Russian TO&Es, but it looks pretty impressive to me.
  7. In late 1941 a special unit existed called the "Tank Destroyer Company". One was attached to each motor-rifle battalion in a tank brigade, and they were pretty much developed for makeshift infantry AT assaults. It consisted of four platoons: one equipped with AT grenade, one equipped with demo charges, one equipped with Flamethrowers, and one equipped with "ampulomet" incendiary launchers. I don't know how it was used, but it seems to suggest that Soviet infantry were, to some extent, expected to take on tanks at very close range.
  8. First of all, seeing as you're asking in the CM forum, I expect you'll get a lot of CM votes. CM should be your choice if realism is a top priority. That's what got me into it, and that's what (I think) most people like the most about it. Yes, it looks great and has some neat toys, but the realistic depiction of low-level combined arms tactics is what sells this game for me. It has an incredibly steep learning curve, and requires a good deal of knowledge on the player's part. It, in my humble opinion, is also one of the most rewarding games I've ever played. I can speak to TOW, but it looks similar to games like COH and European Escalation. If those games are your thing, you might like TOW. I've never found the RTS "tactics" games that pretend to be super historical very fun, and the abovementioned games got old quick for me. I would recommend you get Combat Mission (the exact title is up to you), and don't get frustrated. Read up on tactics and historical stuff and learn the ropes. I guarantee that once you pick it up, you will have more fun than StarCraft or COH or any other shallow RTS. My $0.02.
  9. I just recently discovered (pathetic, I know) the wonder of the Repository. I downloaded a few scenarios (It's Quiet...Too Quiet, Fire Brigade, and Patton's Assault Nemesis), and I have enjoyed them immensely. I'd appreciate if anyone recommended me some other good ones: I play vs. AI only on vanilla BfN, no modules (yet). Thanks in advance!
  10. Can shells go through hatches? Because I think I've lost at least one tank that way. If so, that is both incredibly cool that CM models that and incredibly annoying that I lost a Panther that way...
  11. Yeah, wasn't the 152 used in Korea and the Arab-Israeli Wars?
  12. I don't remember seeing an assault battalion listed as one of the formations in RT, but it would probably be possible for QBs. Couldn't you just purchase additional teams, and attach them under the company commands? I'm aware that that's a different thing than actually reallocating the support weapons, but maybe if you deleted the organic support elements and then purchased new ones for the companies, you'd have a good representation. It seems like these units were usually pretty ad hoc, so any company (+) with added support should be good.
  13. I couldn't find any info on the specific Guards TO&Es, but I did dig up some stuff on vanilla Rifle units. I assume the Guards units are similar to what follows, only with an increased quantity of heavy weapons. The 1943-style battalion was, I believe, the norm. Rifle platoons under this organization consisted of a platoon leader and three eleven-man squads (squad leader plus ten men). Each squad had a single LMG and a mix of rifles and SMGs for the remaining men. Three platoons, HQ elements, and a MG section made up a company, with the MG section* serving two guns (I think, not certain here). Three of these companies, along with a mortar and machine gun company made up a battalion. *In Guards units this was a whole platoon, of around four guns. There were actually several 1944-style organizations I read about, and they were all reduced strength. Under the 1944 TO&E, select divisions would be reduced, sometimes considerably. There were actually four levels of reduction, with the highest reducing a whole division to only around 4,000 men. I don't know which level of reduction BFC chose to implement, but I'd just assume a reduced version of what I listed above. If anyone can shine some light on this, I'd appreciate it. Hope this helped.
  14. Of course, you'd need a scalping animation...
  15. You know, all this fantasizing made me think of something. What if BFC outsourced info on topics that Steve and the others didn't know as much about? With the quantity of grogs on this forum alone, I'm sure people could contribute a ton of information about all kinds of topics. It might take a good deal of the research load off BFC's shoulders, and allow for the more obscure games people love to fantasize about.
  16. I'm aware of the SYW, but I'm a fan of musket and pike more than just musket. With the exception of the Napoleonic Wars, which I love. The French and Indian War, which I am aware is part of the SYW, would actually be pretty interesting. More so than the European/Indian theater, at least to me. Having rifle-armed colonials and Native Americans stalk each other through dense woodland would be pretty sweet, and IMO is the closest thing to "modern" tactics you can find pre-WWI. Read about Roger's Rangers, for example. Those guys are just screaming for a CM game.
  17. Seems like CM: Korea wouldn't be too difficult, and wouldn't incite millions of flamewars like a Vietnam game or one covering the Arab-Israeli Wars would. Following RT, there will be plenty of material to use in terms of weapons and AFVs. It'll be great! Also, if we're getting ridiculous, then CM: Thirty Years War has my vote.
  18. I believe the primary TO&E difference was additional support weapons. At company level, Guards troops have a full MG platoon in support. At battalion level, they enjoy increased amounts of both machine guns and anti-tank rifles. At regimental level (outside of CM scope), Guards units received a second SMG company and extra 120mm mortars. I believe ChrisND mentioned in his TTV stream that Guards have radios at lower levels, and it might be safe to assume that leadership and experience levels will be by and large better than run-of-the-mill army units.
  19. @rokko, I don't think it would have been too uncommon. IIRC, the divisional Fusilier battalion was used to plug holes in broken lines hold positions, something I presume happened quite a bit in Bagration. Also, I know they have quite a few HMGs, but do they have a greater quality of SMGs? I honestly haven't played with them very often.
  20. Oh, this should be entertaining. I think a lot depends on the nature of the battle, though.
  21. I think people have rather skewed perceptions of what people would buy. I don't know how true this is, but I would assume the kind of guys who play CM games would also be the kind if guys who would step outside of the normal "Normandy-Bulge-Stalingrad" boundaries. I mean, look at Fortress Italy. I know people who are unaware Italy played a part in WWII, and yet apparently the game did quite well. I'm not trying to lecture anyone on business, but I wonder if taking the plunge and making a game that isn't so well known might be more successful than people think. After all, it's not like a bunch of Call of Duty and Company of Heroes kids are the core of wargamers. I, for one, would love a WWI game. There are too few of them out there. Same goes for Arab/Israeli Wars, Blitzkrieg-era WWII, Tunisia, and all the other games that have been dismissed as "not popular/well-known enough". Might even get some people interested in or educated about more obscure periods of history. Any thoughts? Also, I'm not trying to stir anything up here, this is just what sprang into my head.
  22. It seems like you could field depleted Soviet rifle squads with low experience and high-ish morale and remove the heavy weapons to create reasonable approximations of partisans. I mean, is there any really special aspect that is missing in-game that prevents partisan use? Doesn't seem too hard to me to throw some guys with guns and low experience together, but that's just my two cents. Not that I wouldn't like to see a "Partisan Pack".
  23. I'm curious about the usage of this thing in-game. From what I can tell, it was almost exclusively employed as a static weapon against high-altitude level bombers, so it won't be relevant for AA purposes in CM (as it isn't effective against fighters/dive bombers). Zaloga writes that is was rarely issued to Army units and seldom used in the AT role, with a few exceptions. I presume it will just be a rare weapon that can serve as a powerful AT gun if necessary?
  24. So will time period and unit quality affect the type of assault gun fielded, or is it just random? Or can you choose?
