    sburke,

How about being grateful your memory is in great shape and that you don't have to deal daily with a grab bag of deficits from a TBI sustained over 7.5 years ago?

    Freyberg,

Many thanks for this, having taken considerable flak lately, even for things far beyond the usual attacks!

    John Kettler,
I personally appreciate your contribution to CM over the years - you have searched out things that are historical, factual, and often extremely interesting. Some things on this particular thread are possibly propaganda, maybe to some degree on both sides. I don't mind that - I like to know what propaganda is out there. It's OK to hear this stuff direct, then you can make up your own mind.
Another very common type of post in CM forums is the opinion post - some of it quite well-informed, a bit more of it being 'armchair general' kind of stuff. I find opinion posts less interesting, but a lot of people like them.
Anyway, I'm glad you post the things you find - I have no time to search out any of this stuff myself. I don't like it that others are rude to you - my rather long list of people I've blocked on this forum is made up of rude people, something I can't abide.
Anyway - keep posting. I've always appreciated your diverse posts on CM and I continue to appreciate them

Apparently the FSB letter previously posted is just one in a series (this could, of course, be someone’s creative writing project, but the recent arrests in the FSB suggest perhaps not):
I will say that the 4th letter gives me some pause that this is authentic.

John, meliorative essentially means "harm reduction", which implies canals for reducing flood damage or redirecting flood waters. So, canals to maintain/return the water table in the event of flooding.
In farming these aren't very deep and are really about spreading/directing the water away so that it doesnt build up into a deep flood - i.e. keep it moving. Large scale flood plains engineering can get quite large - some German drainage canals are functionally transport canals due to their size, which is linked to the size of the Rhine et al.
We had similar small versions on my family farm; it was ridiculously easy to get a tractor bogged in them. There was even an incident in my childhood of a neighbor's tractor getting bogged down, and then the "Rescue Tractor" getting bogged down until finally a Backhoe had to build a mini road with large gravel/rocks to get in and free the Rescue Tractor. This thoroughly trashed the ground so then the Backhoe had to build another mini road from a different angle to get to the first tractor.
It then took the Backhoe and very soon also the rescued Rescue Tractor several hours to suck that m-fer out of the ditch. It was c. 11pm before the first tractor was finally out. Its front angle was ruined and the engine clogged with mud.
This was in Ireland, with farmers deeply familiar with wet soggy ground and its perils.
And no one was shooting missiles at us.
Its great that there's more snow and ice in UKR now - when it melts in the next few days/week it'll really and truly f*ck the RUS mobility off-road for even longer.

    Steve,

Was current when I left the house and am now pages behind after being barely back home. Have checked all my CW posts and found I can delete none, so if they're an issue with you and since it's your board, am afraid you or one of the Mods will have to remove them. Got dinged by one of the Forumites about not providing any sources in one of the earlier ones, so went to heavy documentation later. Sorry so many people consider this topic Russian disinformation. In any event, I shan't be posting further on this, per your and BFCElvis's requests. Would really hate to be sent on vacation with things again heating up!

    re: China
I personally don't think we can draw that many parallel with the current crisis. Despite the rhetoric, I doubt China has serious plans to invade Taiwan.
    1. Taiwan has been independent for 70 years;
    2. Taiwan has few natural resources. China is resource poor and a major aim of its foreign policy for the past 20 years has been to develop access to more natural resources;
    3. The Chinese leadership is more risk adverse than Russia. Xi Jinping does not rule China, the Communist Party rules China. Xi does not have the same freedom of action that Putin has. One wrong move, like an invasion of Taiwan that does not work and he would be out.
What China wants to do, it is already doing, namely gaining control of the South China Seas and its natural resources.

Thought I'd supply some recent links on the latest developments ref biolabs in Ukraine, concerning which both China and Russia have made official statements. China says the US has 26 biolabs in Ukraine. The Russians have published a claimed emergency order from February 22 (the day the invasion began) from the Ukrainian Ministry of Health ordering destruction of pathogens, etc. Please note well the complete absence of infowars and the letter used to denote an interrogative from what I provided. Also, sent Steve none of these. The first one is from yesterday, March 9.

    From a Pakistan defense blog

The first item is from middleeastmonitor.com.

    https://defence.pk/pdf/threads/china-calls-on-washington-to-unveil-bio-labs-in-ukraine-china-demands-answers-from-us-for-26-biolabs-in-ukraine.737235/

The meat of the article reads:

China's statement came a day after the defence ministry in Moscow accused the US of running 30 biological labs in Ukraine, producing viruses that cause serious diseases. The head of Russia's radiation, chemical and biological protection force, Igor Kirillov, noted that Russian troops have destroyed some of them, reported Anadolu Agency.

"Military biological programmes are being implemented by the Pentagon in post-Soviet countries, including in Ukraine," explained Kirillov. "A network of more than 30 biological laboratories has been created, which can be divided into research and sanitary-epidemiological sites in the cities of Lviv, Kharkiv, and Poltava."

The Russian official added that there were traces of pathogens of the plague, anthrax, brucellosis, diphtheria, salmonellosis and dysentery. Neither Kyiv nor Washington commented on this.

Kirillov noted that in Lviv alone, 232 containers were destroyed containing the causative agent of leptospirosis, 30 with tularaemia, 10 with brucellosis and five with plague.

In the same context, Moscow claimed that Washington spent more than $200 million on the work of the biological labs in Ukraine. Furthermore, it alleged that the labs of the Central Directorate of Health and Epidemiology of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence participated in the US military biological programme.

The second is from Pakistan's The Express Tribune and is also quite pithy.

    https://tribune.com.pk/story/2347167/china-demands-answers-from-us-for-26-biolabs-in-ukraine

China asked Washington on Tuesday to release “relevant details as soon as possible” regarding alleged US biological laboratories in Ukraine.

“According to the data released by the US itself, the US has 26 biological laboratories and other related facilities in Ukraine which has indeed attracted great attention,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said at a news conference in Beijing.

A similar claim was made Sunday by Russian Defence Ministry that there was “evidence of a US-financed military biological programme developed in Ukraine.”

Moscow said the lab was “revealed during Russia’s special operation in that country.”

“All dangerous viruses in Ukraine must be stored in these laboratories. All research activities are led by the US. No information is allowed to be disclosed without the permission of the US side,” claimed Zhao, according to a transcription of the news conference.

He claimed the Pentagon “has absolute control” over these alleged labs.

Here is ample evidence the biolabs exist and that Russia has been sounding the alarm over them from a BW standpoint going clear back to 2015.

    https://www.networkradio.us/post/the-united-biolabs-of-ukraine

And here we have reports of official US statement from the US Embassy in Kviv the labs exist, the letter from no fewer than four members of the Rada officially notifying Zelensky and two other Ukrainian government officials of their concerns about the labs, which they explicitly state are DOD controlled and that the Ukrainian Ministry of Health was working with them. Of particular note are their statements regarding hundreds of deaths (450) in one incident alone and total deaths of nearly 1000. They express concern as to BW and that the Ukrainian people may be the targets of the work. There are maps produced by Bulgarian journalists showing the locations of the labs, all sorts of material on the work being done, funding ($2.1 BILLION for DOD (from DTRA) funded biolabs worldwide), a statement from the US Embassy the Pentagon was supervising the labs, and all sorts of agreements and arrangements produced as well. Digital images of some of the purported documents (in Ukrainian) are included.

    https://seemorerocks.is/the-secret-us-biolabs-in-ukraine/

Shall close with a very long, excruciatingly detailed and well documented look at the ongoing, clandestine and protected by diplomatic cover and corporate insulation from surveillance and oversight US BW program. As a longtime student of BW and CW, as well as someone who had to become directly involved in both as a Soviet Threat Analyst when working on aircrew and aircraft NBC protection for the Rockwell's Advanced Tactical Fighter, I found even spot reading harrowing.
Among other things, it shows that a US lab in Georgia was doing real work (2014) with virus-infected biting flies (from the Philippines!), and that these same non-indigenous to the area biting flies then appeared in Dagestan, Russia, ((2014) shortly after they appeared out of nowhere in Tbilisi, Georgia (2014) and became a real problem. There was NO biting fly problem in Tbilisi BEFORE the insect facility was established at the biolab there. In both locations everyone bitten by them developed mysterious rashes. The US Army ran a multi-year program in which it did testing of insect-transmitted viruses on soldiers using various insect species to bite the test subjects. The declassified Army documents proving this insect-delivered testing was done are now available. Would note that the use of insects as BW vectors is well established, such as the infected flea bombs the Japanese created in the notorious Unit 731 and dropped on the Chinese.

    https://goldenageofgaia.com/2020/04/20/pentagon-biological-weapons-program-never-ended/

Shall be most interested to see the responses to the above, and I ask my critics especially to read the articles and think about them, and do their own checking, rather than abreacting and going off on me (not to mention using the threat of a vacation to silence me)  simply because they disagree with me, the subject or don't want to believe it could be real.

The new materials I found provide an excellent basis for understanding why the Russians have been long (since 2015) and loudly sounding the alarm ref the DOD-funded biolabs in Ukraine.

    Regards,

    John Kettler

    sburke,

I deliberately didn't post links, because I wanted you to go first read the realities of Snopes and do your own research so you couldn't say I rigged the results. I did offer to post the links I sent Steve, but only if he was cool with it. All I did in my post was to provide a quick summary of what I personally had found. At no time did I refer to either of the two sites named by you. While we're at it, another thing my own research turned up was DARPA work on genomic mapping of ethnic groups.    This has patently obvious BW application.

Whether Steve agrees to my posting the links here or not, I make this offer: will send those who PM me a request the same links I sent Steve. Just include your email, so I can do this privately.

    Regards,

    John Kettler

I don't know if you know the Lindybeige youtube channel. He's a British amateur historian making long, rambling videos about historical warfare, but apparently he also has a friend who now volunteered to go to Ukraine and fight. In this video, Lindybeige turns serious for a moment and makes a quite good little interview with his friend about his thoughts and motivations for volunteering.
One interesting thing being said is that his friend estimated that from the Bristol area alone, around a thousand Brits have decided to join the Ukrainian "foreign legion".

Perhaps I'm being a bit conspiracy theorist here, but I'm inclined to view all of this as a "boiling the frog" secenario - shifting the Overton window of what they can do without escalating too fast for Russia to accept (if you'll forgive the Overton window analogy).
e.g. NATO will keep saying no to the concept of a no-fly zone, but they will keep doing so if only to keep the phrase "no-fly zone" in continual use. Russia keeps hearing the words and is focused on making sure it isn't going to happen.
Maybe at some point, they start discussing conditions under which a no-fly zone might work, while insisting that they don't think it is viable. And mentioning that there is no scenario where they'd put ground troops in to protect humanitarian corridors between Kiev and the Polish border.
Slowly the limits of what they say they are not doing move further along. And at the other end of the window, the scale of what they can actually supply to Ukraine without Russia viewing it as a sudden escalation will slowly move along. Maybe some better air defence systems that can be deployed in western Ukraine to protect humanitarian aid from accidents in the near-ish future.
The aim is to keep increasing what can be sent to Ukraine, but to do so in a way that Russia will view each new step as a problem, but not an existential threat. So psychologically you need to keep having people calling for more drastic steps that Russia would react very strongly against (e.g. a no fly zone currently), and have the official position being "no way" whilst slowly trying to create the conditions where it becomes conceivable but remote, and eventually just a minor step above what is already being done.

I wouldn't be surprised if we receive news soon that Ukraine has overrun the Russian convoy.
But the whole thing also has a bit of "Barbarossa" feel to it. Reports of victories just keep rolling in, and the whole war seems decided already.
