    Turn 6 Execution

    1 Coy

    (A) Beeing under heavy fire from enemy mortars and AC´s, parts of 1st squad figured the outside position at Sextons House untenable and thus run. WIA Staff Sergeant Kunick got to surrender to his fate...

    (A) 3rd squad fared no better. Seeking cover behind that raised road, just one man made it back. 1. Plt is now almost wiped out. A handful of men still try to hold at Sextons House.

(between A and B) 1. Plt leader 251/17 discovered enemy AC´s moving from (CR) and quickly switched to reverse. But too late. Just one second before the turns end it caught an enemy shell. This time not that lucky, but.... (to be continued)

    (B) 2. Plt successfully extracted from (B) and now ready for a new task.

    (B) 1st squad of 3. Plt succeeded in its recon mission. This route is not safe! Despite moving in the shadows, the enemy (near CR) took notice and an AC´s shell wiped half the squads men out.
I could have split off a recon team first, but anyway it´s a stupid move. Oh well...

Between (A) and (B): "Panzerschreck nach Vorne!" (Panzerschreck forward!). Let´s see if those guys get an aim on that nasty enemy AC´s.

    2 Coy

    (C) Finally something to shoot at in Coy sector. From a forward position just reached, a 3. Plt´s team takes invisible enemies under fire. The picture becomes clearer...

...while more of 3. Plt´s men about to secure buildings near the crest. (C)

(crest near C) The Bn HQ´s group sniper team got spotted and the enemy let them know. That was close. Just some scratches from shrapnel. High time to change position...

A recon team of 1. Plt on the way towards (E). Still no sight of the enemy....

East of the Laundry: "Maj. Berger here. Request mortar fire support mission at coordinates...."

And in fact, in single player games, the AI defender cannot bombard the attacker's setup zones at all. Not sure what the deal is for a human defender against the AI, but even if it is allowed I would not consider it as quite cricket.

    Correct.
For me it is a key consideration in the VP structure and my testing regime. Generally I cease fire at the start and in five minute increments to check that an early cease fire gives the intended result and does not reward a player who is tempted to opt for an early cease fire. I would say that this is probably the most difficult thing to craft but I have learned a few tricks along the way. I don't see it as a means of making my scenarios less appealing at all, it is simply a means of ensuring that the player gets a fair result in return for the effort they have expended up to the point that they cease fire. In my view this approach is an absolute must in anything designed to be played H2H (which admittedly I don't design much of).

    MINUTE 18
My halftrack continues some area fire to pin down the enemy.

The 10,5cm shell of this turn is bad. Four teams impacted... Argh!!! 😡

Looks like our old friend, the armored car, is back.

Meanwhile my mortar team is starting a fire mission to add more casualties to the guys in front of me in the woods.

This time, my halftrack is able to spot the enemy car and starts firing. 🎅

I hope it will be neutralized now. 😃

A little zoom on my mortar team currently firing.

I have a small team doing recon of the main objective. No shots at all. Where is the enemy?

You know when, during a walk in the countryside, you look at the windows of one house and evaluate the best angle of attack to take it, looking at cover and concealment, and where to place the fire support team...

I know I've been playing too much CM when I'm driving around and see a field and wonder how many hundreds of meters there are across it, or whether that building way off in the distance is within rifle range or not.

Oh man you don't know the half of it.  He strolls around the beta club showing off some bomber jacket with that scrolled across the back.  He even has a tattoo! Doubt that is official, but you'd think so from the way he flaunts it.  He does this really lame casual move edging up to the bar in a way to put the dang thing right in your face and considering where the tattoo is... well it is just quite rude.

It's an excellent scenario - I played it twice, first H2H, then against the AI.
I can't remember the precise outcome of the H2H battle, but I remember it was exciting and close. It's an Italy scenario, so as Allies I was aggressive and used weight of numbers. I probably lost (which is not unusual), but I do remember it was very close.
Against the AI (much more recently) it was also fun and exciting, with high casualties, but it wasn't too hard to get a total victory against the AI. I seem to recall it was a real combined arms operation. Using artillery was quite important, and once there were a few gaps in the German line or they were suppressed, there were some blind spots I could push men through.
