You can load the graphic into the free Greenfish Icon Editor and then use the eraser too to make any part transparent.
This is exactly what I am doing and try to show with some pics @WimO thank you !
Personly, I use paint.net to save it in png for the transparency, but is my choice, dont forget also to created sometimes the normal map, than export in greenfish and save it in bmp.
We can also do it with photoshop or gimp but sometimes this doens t work for me !!
So now the us army havent bayonette in my game !!
select and delete the part in transparent and save it via this program in bmp.
the picture in your folder will appear like this in black color !!but in the game like this !!
because the transparent is black !!
Hope now is clear enough !! ??
@WimO perhaps some added useful infos ??

Not sure I understand. What do you mean save the BMP in black?
Just to be clear, I want to make invisible part of a bmp, not the whole BMP
Is true, I never let desapear a part of a picture but always completely.
I will make myself some test from a part of bmp to see how it's works !
Hope that you will find somebody with the correct answer.
Sorry cannot help !

Is there a way to have parts of uniforms transparent in the BMP format that Combat Mission uses?
I know there is a way to make all of a texture transparent, like making chin straps invisible in various mods.
I want to make shoulder straps invisible in various CM:A uniforms, this game has the shoulder strap in another part of the uniform texture, not in the shoulder, and it puts it in the shoulder ingame, so editing it is quite difficult, making it transparent would be way easier. Does that make any sense?
Try this.
To let "disappear" uniforms or what else check the mod of MOS with his helmets mod, and "paint" the part that you want "delete" in black, save your bmp in black.
This is the methods that I use to let "desapear things" like amunition pouch, gaz mask or whatever.
Hope this help you -

Frankie Howard was a very good Brit comedian same generation as Tommy Cooper, Benny Hill etc. Interesting that when I did a search for Brit comedians of the 60's and 70's, Benny Hill's name did not come up.
Yes Erwin the Benny Hill Show I saw this int the 80 it was funny with british humour !

Starting in late January, or thereabouts, it started raining and didn't stop. The British zone of operation became a flooded quagmire. The time window in the game where the Brits were fighting on snow would be pretty small. Most of the Western Front snowy photos we know were taken early January, a week or more after the Bulge battles took place.
Agree @MikeyD Belgium and North of France is a mud place because the rain, I was only hopping to have sone snowing uniforms because I want to created a scen that take really place in Belgium in a weather with snow time, with some British Paras at the end of the battle of Bulge, the battle of Bure, perhaps that nobody know this battle, but was really important because this one of the moment that the SS division on the front was stopped by British Army.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Bure#
this is why I want to have some snowly situation and was a little disappointed to don't find any.

Hold your horse guys,
I salute and respects yours Knowledge and infos I'm not here to fight with any of you I have my point of view about answer and kind of words on the forum, but I maintain sometimes the lack of infos that we don't have when we are searching for, about a certains project or development or announces,
Personly I never have a lack of respect for anybody and I try always to have a clear mind with polite form to express what I am talking about.
and let it know, I think this is allowed to talking about isn't ?
But here I don't want that this thread will be closed to a sentence that I said in a short moment, and hope will not be the case, this is why I stop the discussion. -
Pehaps later but, on the beginning I think the British army was in the same situation as the US, they have to wait to the winter clothes, and dont have anything correct, just the same uniforms from Normandy, after with the time all equipments was share it, so perhaps BFC could included a minimum of some ("bmps with snow tags") would be welcome.
Is true that we dont have "the skeletons" to give the form of the british uniforms like we can imagine the soldier standing up in this pictures, I dont know any silhouettes like this in CM game to represent a solder in winter uniforme, I have to check in differents module, perhaps in CMRT with a winter russian uniform ?
BFC have to created himself this, is the famous (mds files in the game).

The only problem people have is a lack of communication. That's it. Other developers share their progress, we're lucky if we get more than one update.
Just give you right
Ok for the people who work on the mentioned project, it can become annoying to always repeat the same thing, but not for the people who are not concerned and who blurt out sentences at random just to say something, without taking the time to inform themselves of the release of the project.
No one is God as far as I know, knows everything about everything in all areas, and a question is always unanswered, it is always more pleasant to receive concrete and kinder information, this answer has the same meaning for me that "we know nothing about it at the moment" but in a sarcastic tone, to tell us this don t say nothing, appropriate would be"have worked there or they work there", there are more polite ways to use,
Here, I have the impression that everyone works for BFC and that everyone knows everything but doesn't want to say anything, or in their own way, yes the lack of information is crucial, here and is lacking, so to a correct question an answer correct will be welcome.
I dare to hope that you yourself will one day be in this undecided situation and that you will ask yourself what stage a project is at, just to inform yourself, just to know and perhaps have the information you are looking for, like everyone does. .
I will be there to read again, when the sentence comes out just again to remind, politesse go out or don t exist more on a forum, with the time, and this is really sad. -

Again, I'm not sure but I think roundels were only used on planes, not vehicles? And on planes they weren't replaced with stars AFAIK. On vehicles however, just like the photo above, the star was used. And if I was in a vehicle in Normandy (for example) I'd want it to be as clear as possible to my aircraft friends that I was not an enemy. Did that work? Not always...
As @Warts 'n' all said, red and white stripes were used on British tanks in Africa and Italy. Why red and white stripes? Looks a bit English to me, not British .
Looks a bit English to me, not British
Just interresting how english men are, when they are talking togethers
OK guys I have also something about circles and stars and markings, we have 2 or three differents mods pack, for the Allied, on the CMMODs IV, and I would like to know who is correct about vehicles markings signs and Insigns !
and one again all the others two above !
What we have in real, on DDay in Normandy markings or no markings !

Sorry but this silly answer piss me off when I read it, this probably saying in a funny way or a strong answer but this bring me to jump, the day that some people's want to have an answer about something we will be also happy to recieve a correct answer.
...me also sometimes I want to have more unfos about things and is always welcome !
@Unremarkable Sunray was making a wonderfull mod thank you again boy, he gave me kindly a copy, from his Britishs and West German soldiers I recommand him to put on the CMMODs, available for everybody's, time to have the correct new module from BFC, that we are waiting.

Uh...sorry! That was probably misleading! I meant a Google search to see pictures of British snow uniforms (white!) in WWII.
I just took the leather vests from the mod https://www.thefewgoodmen.com/cm-mod-warehouse/combat-mission-battle-for-normandy/cmbn-infantry/cmbn-veins-cw-uniforms/ to make the CW soldiers look a little more wintry....Yes dont worry by white uniforms I found some also, but I want normally have a mix of them...just let past the time for us I m sure somebody will working on., perhaps myself I am already to try something...

In the past someone made an excellent mod for the Americans, I was surprised from the details showing uniforms covered in snow, partially white helmets just covered with sheets or rags, the soldiers covered themselves with whatever they found, some with gloves others without before the US regulatory uniforms reached the units for the winter, it was an excellent mod, and would be a model to realized a similar for the briish one, alas I lost an HD with all the "unpublished" mods I am not able to find it, if anyone anyone knows what I'm talking about, please let me know
,,,just typing yours terms @waffelmann but dont find something adapted...

Ahem ! "happy that you discover the real aspect in the game" when in your drawing tools (Photoshop or gimp or whatever) appear in another view.,you beging to pull out your hair and when you will touch a day to blender you will discover that CM is bewitched...
Tell me eventual what you want to do, perhaps I can help you ?
Hola Tim I yes I know, because I made a test after in the game, and this appear correctly like they have to let theirs bayonets at the armory to let it sharpens ...
Here I took a quick job and take a picture to make a test, to let disappear partially something on a bmp and its works.
