  1. Looking to start a campaign I see a given one listed with and without brackets. What is the difference between the two?
  2. "Valley of Death" Sgt. Squarehead. I played it as Russian initially and won it - in that game the Bradley got the kill at relatively short range - maybe 200m but again from the front. The longer range kill occurred when we swapped sides and I won as the American in that one. I don't know db, I find most scenarios balanced enough - the thing that makes a huge difference is APS - it basically renders Russian infantry impotent against US vehicles. With Javelins, the revers is not true.
  3. Thanks for ideas lads - I am seeing it ("opening" penetration) often enough in this scenario. Tank crew was buttoned up.
  4. I'm playing a scenario with a friend where a Bradley of mine took out one of his T90s, hitting it with its 25mm cannon on the front at about 1000m. We were both a bit surprised. The hit message referred to hitting an "opening". Is this to be expected? What the heck is an "opening" on the front of a MBT?!?!? Thanks
  5. Wish I had thought of that at the start of the scenario Amedeo - nice strategy. I'm finding that generally Russian vehicles in stationary positions facing oncoming US vehicles come off worse and rarely spot first, and this over the crest of a ridge only about 100m away. I'm going to try opening up the tanks - they should be able to eyeball the movement right away.
  6. Playing a scenario with three Khrizantemas and all three have been knocked out. Two went while stationary, spotted by tanks that moved into their line of sight but were never spotted by the Russians. The third I hunted forward to target an Abrams in a hull down position (the Russian). It took 2s for the Abrams to spot the Khrizantema (which never spotted the Abrams) at its 9 o'clock and destroy it. Just one scenario but I would be interested in others' experiences - are they blind?
  7. This is one of the best scenarios I have ever played vs AI. Nothing to apologise for and proper challenging - more please!
  8. Agreed Erwin. I'm not sure what the exact points difference in "Czechmate" is (CMCW) but I just finished it and the Russians massively outnumber the US and it is very easy to lose as the USSR. At one point I had a unit destroyed, went to attack the location the fire had come from only to find that it had relocated as it turns out a very significant distance.
  9. I'm back to this after some CMCW. Do people still think it's worth playing compared to the more recent games? I have a memory of a very atmospheric mission attacking as CW forces with Churchills and I think some Fireflys against a farm defended by several Panthers, some AT guns and I think some pillboxes. Ring any bells? Would like to try it again. Thanks
  10. Actually weird thing is that if I keep my cursor off screen (say over the unit tray) and move only using WASD and mouse it moves fine - it's only a problem when the cursor is on-screen, indicating destination squares. Again, this is only a problem with infantry.
  11. Actually just logged in to note something about this scenario. So far I have about 5 scenarios under my belt and all run fine and I'm having a blast with them. I even checked out the biggest scenario to see how it would run on my system and no issues, camera pans smoothly at all times and I can issue commands with no lag between clicking and the order appearing. In the Czechmate scenario the camera moves less fluidly - no problem with this as I suppose it is a function of map size and the number of trees (although when I turn the latter off it makes little difference) but when I have a command selected and I move around looking for the right place to drop it, the camera slows to a complete crawl but only if I have an infantry unit selected. It slows just a little bit if a vehicle but grinds almost to a halt if infantry. The round replays fine but at the moment the scenario is unplayable for me unless I am just giving infantry one waypoint.
  12. I have a saved file in my incoming email folder but it does not appear in the saved game interface. Any ideas as to why? I have used the drop down menu to cycle through all options. This is a year old game with a friend who just returned to the game.
  13. Not sure if this is a bug or intended but when I detach a scout team from the Russian recon squads in the second mission of the campaign on of the two soldiers is carrying their LMG. Should it not stay behind?

    PBEM game(s)

Looking for opponents in CMSF (all modules), CM Afghanistan and CMBN, CMCW, CMFI. Cheers.
  15. Hi all, Got thinking about the way I am reacting to AI controlled barrages while playing one of the campaigns today (yet to try PBEM). I tend to run entire platoons away at top speed as soon as I see spotting rounds coming in. When I can manage this I survive with few to no casualties. Is this at all historical? I doubt units would take the initiative this way at least under orders - I guess they might rout. Would be interested in some informed thinking about this.
  16. Interesting, Germans (with 2 LMGs I presume) in a building vs US in the open end up losing the firefight? This would square with my experience of playing the German side I have to admit - I've been driven out of buildings by US squads in the open unless I have at least 2 to 1 squads. Still feel that MGs are undermodelled in this game.
  17. Hi all, It will be a while before I am able to give this a go but wondering if those of you who are playing can give some feedback on changes made to onboard mortars using direct fire? The patch notes indicate that some changes have been made - I would be curious to know what they are. I ask because in my experience (solely single player), mortars are incredibly accurate, fast on target and with a very wide range of explosive effectiveness. When playing US in particular the only job my other infantry seems to play is in locating and then drawing fire from the enemy so my mortars can set up and anihilate them in one turn (ok sometimes two!). Cheers
  18. Never mind, previously incorrectly applied patch had created extra CMSF folder within CMSF and was directing patch to this - actual correct path works.
  19. Just tried to apply patch to v1.31 in Windows vista and all seems to go fine, launch as admin and still v 1.31 - confirmed that Germans still do not have their fausts. Installed to and launched from correct file - any ideas? Thanks
  20. I know this has been commented upon elsewhere but I've just finished played the US campaigns and am now moving on to play some German missions. In the US missions it became a tried and tested technique to move to contact with scout sections, identify enemy firing locations at which point I would move up my mortars which would 90%+ of the time neutralise the target after less than a turn firing. If it took more than a turn the challenge was to manage ammunition using "Target Light". MGs in general were much less effective - while I would move them up as well, they generally took a couple of turns before they even had LOS on the target to fire (in contrast to the mortars which generally were able to draw LOS to slightly behind the bocage covering the target). I should note that these situations mostly reflect firing at bocage targets from the same cover. Enemy HMGs rarely caused me trouble and the only time I ever had to restart a scenario was when I was caught by enemy mortar fire which was infrequent. I was struck though by how effective individual rounds were in terms of range of effect on impact. At the end of the campaign I would have mortars with 30+ kills each while my MGs were doing well to have 3 odd. Now I have just started playing German (attacking) missions against the AI and can see the effects of the mortars more directly. They do seem like death rays I must admit. Whatever about accuracy their effects on impact are devastating. I have now got to the point that I try to draw fire with as few troops as possible in the hopes that this will make the defending mortars waste their ammo. I guess I am asking that BFC take a look at this: were mortars really that effective and MGs so ineffective (at least in terms of inflicting casualties)? Cheers
  21. Just got done playing Barkmann's corner as German. A couple of things of interest that were also present in the Demo. As others have noted I am surprised how accurate fire is from tanks on the move but there are other things that perplex me more. 1st my elite Panther had a hard time getting the first shot off even when staring down the road at an oncoming Sherman - the American often fired first despite the fact that the Panther had spotted it earlier. 2nd penetrating shots often didn't result in a kill - on my experience at least 2 seem necessary. I had one case of a Sherman 76W that took two Panther hits, reversed, took a Shrek (at 200m!) and was only finally killed when it moved forward again a while later! Actually Shreks seem pitiful at one shot kills. 3rd Main gun on the Panther seems very easy to disable. Only got the game and no rigorous testing but can be very frustrating. Anyone got any thoughts on this? Cheers.
