  1. Thanks. Frustrating. It looks to be a great campaign, but not very playable with 3/4 of the armor sitting things out. Peter
  2. Hi all, I recently downloaded the "Letzte Hoffnung" Campaign from the Scenario Depot. I am enjoying it, but it seems that a large portion of my armor has gone MIA after mission one. I have been able to advance without it, but before I get too invested in this campaign, I was wondering if someone who has played this through could tell me if this is part of the campaign design, or another example of the "disappearing" armor bug that has popped up here and there. I got a platoon of Panthers and a platoon of Panzer IV's in the first mission. I didn't lose any of them. In the second mission, I got the platoon command Panther, as well as one other Panther, and a single Panzer IV. I also got two of the four surviving scout cars from the first mission. Thanks for any clarity on this! Peter
  3. Some thoughts from the hindsight is 20/20 for armchair generals' department. I loved how bil used a screen of jeeps to help him figure out what was going on before baneman did. It definitely illustrated to me how useful reconnaissance can be, vs. my normal technique of charging my entire formation in a likely direction without having any sense of what is in front of it. That said, at least how Battlefront models them, even late war U.S. tanks and tank destroyers are heavily overmatched by German equipment in a straight up head-on fight. I wonder if bil getting lucky on his early hit and kill on a Panther helped him forgot about that in the critical moments when he had to choose whether to fade away after icing the Panther or charge to glory. Hindsight of course says he should have set some flanking ambushes, got the heck out of dodge and made baneman's little armored force advance on him. Secondly, even if bil had been able to get more guns on the Jadgtiger, trying to engage it from the front would have only been successful if he had been able to hit it enough to start disabling major systems, (like um, the cannon). Maneuvering against it in twos and threes was never going to be enough and that, coupled with baneman's cagey repositioning meant that instead of trying to fight the thing head to head it would have been better to just get away and either shell the heck out of it, or wait until you get a flank shot (or make your own by actually charging the thing through the hail of panzerfausts). But had bil been able to get five or six guns pointed at it during the same moment, who knows? Third, I wonder if a little bit more infantry (a couple of platoons even, one in Cobru and the other holed up in some of the forested areas), would have been enough to have slowed baneman down and made some sort of defense possible even after the failure of the armored counterattack. While he took some casualties, baneman was able to infiltrate his infantry all over the place, and while watching those jeeps zoom around was fun, they were a pretty darn thin screen when it came to actually holding that force. Also, we never got to see how much firepower of squad of stg. 44 equipped volksgrenadiers can put on target. In any case it was a fun read, and, honestly turned out very differently than I expected when it started. I'll miss compulsively checking the forums for the latest from the front... Thanks guys!
  4. I love campaigns, but find both of the included ones just too big to be fun. It's probably just me, but I get tired of managing more than about a company of infantry and 15-20 vehicles of all types at any given time. So, yes to more campaigns, but please, make them the friendly forces a bit smaller.
  5. I had two experiences playing Angriff as the Russians recently. 1. I had a platoon of Soviet infantry on an objective and two Panthers drove up. They were about 30-40 meters away so I tried to maneuver my squads into close assault range over mostly open ground. No dice. Dead Russians everywhere. I think three men managed to survive. 2. I had a platoon of Panzer IV's drive right on top of another platoon of infantry in the woods. The Soviets destroyed all four tanks in close assault with the loss of about a squad. I think Battlefront has this about right. Most of the time spotted infantry that isn't right on top of a tank isn't going to survive. On the other hand, infantry can and did destroy tanks that were dumb enough to drive right over them. Actually it was kind of gratifying to watch the second platoon take out those Panzer IV's. Sometimes things go your way, even with Russian infantry. Of course it would have been even shorter and messier if a platoon of T-34's had blindly driven into panzerfaust armed Germans.
  6. Oddball, I suppose from their perspective they were in a pretty uncomfortable place, in amongst buildings and being shot at by infantry. They might have just been missed by a panzerfaust, but I don't think they had taken damage.
  7. Huh, I've taken out a t-34/85 with a flamethrower. It didn't blow up, but the crew abandoned ship pretty quickly.
  8. I just played this through and didn't notice anything that made me think something is balanced differently than it used to be. I did restart once about five minutes in and that did give me some initial information about the axis of the Russian attack which no doubt made my set up the second time more effective, but with that caveat, the German equipment definitely maintains its edge over Russian, so long as it's well placed. I destroyed 23 tanks for the total loss of two Panthers, with two more Panthers combat ineffective due to weapon damage. The jadgpanzers actually proved to be very survivable in my play through - get them hull down and they are really hard to hit. At certain angles, the T-34 85s turret could deflect 75 L48 rounds, but the German armor definitely did better against the Russian 85mm and 76mm guns than the Russian armor did against the Germans, and the 88 is still king of the battlefield against t-34 series tanks. It was interesting to me to see just how many Russian tanks got destroyed by penetrating shots to the front mantlet. I wonder if the difficult with this scenario is more about resisting the urge to push your armor too far forward to claim the objectives, instead of putting it in overwatch while pushing your infantry forward. At under 500 yards, tank losses seem to be pretty much 1 for 1, but if you can stay further back, stationary, and unbuttoned, it wasn't too hard to really shoot up the Russian armor.
  9. And now I see I am not the first, not the second, but the third to bring this to your attention in the 24 hours. Combat Mission players are a geeky bunch...
  10. Yea! I really love the trouble you guys go through to get things like this right. It adds a ton to my enjoyment of the game.
  11. I'm sure you guys love this sort of thing, but I think I noticed a minor modeling mistake with the Russian Mosin Nagant rifles visible in your beta screen shots. They have turned down bolts. This is especially clear in image 26 of the gallery. In reality, the standard (non-sniper) Mosin Nagant 91/30 had a straight bolt, only sniper bolts were turned down. Standard 91/30 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:30_Mosin.JPG Sniper 91/30 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mosin_pu_hungarian_M52.jpg I'm thrilled about the game, and just thought I would give you another "small detail" to consider.
  12. Hello, I've put a ticket in on this, but in the meantime thought I would see if anyone else was having this issue. in a nutshell, CMBN crashes every time I attempt to start it on my 2010 iMac with a i7 2.8 GHZ, 4 GB RAM, and a 4850 graphics card. I've tried reinstalling the demo. I'm not running Norton or an equivalent. I'm running OS 10.6.7. The "unexpectedly quit" message I get says this: Exception Type: EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP) Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000002, 0x0000000000000000 Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread So, am I the only one seeing this? I've been waiting to play this for a good six years now
  13. Moon, thanks. I have put in a ticket - CMBN isn't a option in the ticketing window yet, so I just marked it as "other" and made sure I got the game info in the content.
  14. I can't get the demo to run at all on my iMac 2.8 i7, 4 GB RAM, 4850 graphics. I have reinstalled it twice and made sure that I have copied the game over to the applications folder. This is the error information I get: Process: CMBN [286] Path: /Applications/Combat Mission Battle for Normandy Mac DEMO.app/Contents/MacOS/CMBN Identifier: com.battlefront.CMBN Version: 1.0 (1) Code Type: X86-64 (Native) Parent Process: launchd [108] Date/Time: 2011-05-12 11:32:21.450 -0400 OS Version: Mac OS X 10.6.7 (10J869) Report Version: 6 Interval Since Last Report: 576612 sec Crashes Since Last Report: 9 Per-App Interval Since Last Report: 48 sec Per-App Crashes Since Last Report: 9 Anonymous UUID: 37498326-9389-4E44-913A-474FABBDC34D Exception Type: EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP) Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000002, 0x0000000000000000 Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread
