OrdeaL reacted to Bufo in "Turned out" on modern vehicles
"A vehicle must be unbuttoned to horizontally share (report) information from about 9 to 32 meters.
A vehicle can be buttoned & horizontally share (report) information if it is within 8 meters of the other vehicle."

OrdeaL reacted to IICptMillerII in "Turned out" on modern vehicles
Its important to remember that while on newer vehicles like an M1A2, even though the commander has an independent thermal imaging sight which gives him great spotting ability, he still has better overall situational awareness while unbuttoned. Things such as seeing/hearing threats to the sides and rear of the tank, and seeing/hearing where other friendly units are. Plus, while unbuttoned the commander can share C2 information with infantry (such as spotting information) whereas while buttoned he cannot.
Also, it is still SOP in the real world for tank commanders to remain unbuttoned until either in direct combat, or forced to by something like enemy artillery falling nearby. Again, this is mostly so the TC can maintain his situational awareness, communicate with the other tanks in his element, and better direct the driver.

OrdeaL reacted to Erwin in "Turned out" on modern vehicles
This is what I found compiled:
BUTTONED SPOTS BETTER:
Here is a possibly incomplete list of vehicles that spot better while buttoned all the time (but only to the front of the vehicle).
M1A2 Abrams
T-90AM
BM Oplot
M2A3 Bradley
M3A3 Bradley
M7A3 B-FIST
Khrizantema
Tunguska
I don't know for certain, but I think it very unlikely that vehicle crews have night vision goggles, so nearly all vehicles should stay buttoned in low light conditions.
UNBUTTONED SPOTS BETTER:
Recon-specific M1127 Stryker with LRAS3
Regarding spotting problems:
This is what I found recently in CMSF2 (not sure if same issues in CMBS):
-
OrdeaL reacted to Saint_Mattis in SPOTTING ISSUES
My main annoyance is a tank with IR optics not being able to spot anything in a treeline, the vision needs to be improved

OrdeaL reacted to Erwin in SPOTTING ISSUES
<sigh> Alright... Ran another spotting test:
Moved a scout team (NO BINOCULARS, only Mk 1 eyeballs) plus a FO with targeting tech and a JAV AT team to exactly the same location where I knew from past tests they should be able to easily spot an enemy AFV.
1) After about 3.5 minutes, the SCOUT team with NO BINOCULARS spotted the hulldown enemy AFV. at 2,658 meters distance The FO and JAV team have not positively spotted the AFV despite having high tech optics and binoculars.
2) After 6 minutes the SCOUT with NO BINOCS has spotted a 2nd enemy AFV at about 2,789 meters. The FO and JAV team have still not positively spotted any AFV despite having binoculars and the JAV optics. Neither has the SCOUT communicated anything about the AFV to the FO or Jav team as one would expect if the C2 system is performing as advertised.
3) After 10 minutes of no change to the above situation I quit the test.
Questions:
Why is a scout with no optical tech able to spot the AFV at over 2.6Km when the FO with its targeting tech and the Jav with superior optics and binocs cannot?
What hasn't the scout communicated this info to the other teams which are lying on top of him?
-
OrdeaL reacted to Erwin in SPOTTING ISSUES
Hmm... since no one else wants to examine this, I did another test using "Tactical Vignette Attack in Brandenburg" (another good scenario by George MC). I thought that perhaps long range spotting is bugged. So, the Brandenburg map is much smaller - so distances are in hundreds of meters rather than thousands.
However... once again scouts with NO BINOCULARS or any other aid, are able to spot enemy ATGM's with ease - within a couple of minutes. The HQ cannot see them even when the HQ in on the same roof as the scout for several minutes. Why don't they communicate?
Ditto: The Javelin Teams also cannot spot the ATGM's.
Also, the Bradleys and M1's also cannot spot the ATGM's after many minutes. One has to Area Fire em at where the scouts know the ATGM's are located.
Unless someone has an explanation, this seems to indicate that SPOTTING does not work as advertised. But, please do your own tests.

OrdeaL reacted to womble in Grenades, Satchel Charge?
There's no way to explicitly order your troops to close assault a tank. They'll do if if they're close enough and feel confident enough (morale and suppression state, motivation, leadership, fatigue, experience and supply level all feed into the decision). Experimentation with Blast commands show they have no desirable effect on whether a demo charge-equipped element will use their packs against armour rather than nearby terrain.

Only one shader folder at a time!. But now I separated different shaders and added ReadMe in every .zip so hopefully it will be everything clear

OrdeaL reacted to Paulus in Hit decals on Infantry..
Sorry, but i find this insulting. Yes i take this game seriously (but perhaps not to your level), yes i would like to see some blood and gore.
It's not gamebreaking the way it is, not at all. But it would be nice to add, immersion and overall mood in the game.
As people who find it too offending (to see blood etc.) i've 2 arguments;
-99% of games, model blood and gore (in combat), but almost none of the gamers complain.
- Combat Mission models in great detail the psychological effects of combat (the fear, the panic, the cowering, the screaming when hit,
the running away when broken etc..) and we love the game for it! But the physical effect are too shocking or sickening, or what? I find this
some what hypocritical.
Perhaps somebody can correct me?

OrdeaL reacted to slysniper in Terrain?
Personally, anyone playing the game with charts have issues as far as I am concerned.
Winning the game is more important than playing the game for what its enjoyment factor should be.
Now, do solders in real combat use charts and data, Actually they do. There is always a study as to best engagement distances with the enemy and what weapon match ups do and to try to engage at ranges that best suites what you have to fight with.
But there is no terrain charts, soldiers cannot measure wall thickness and know for sure what building gives the best cover. But players in the game sure will go to any length to know that and other similar stuff.
What is better, that group of woods or the building for cover, in real life is there a answer for that. Not really. But here you are wanting it in the game.
Play the game enough and you know what the terrain does as to protecting you, stop making it a math test. that is not the point of the game anymore.
Terrain cannot move with you on the battlefield, your units have to deal with what terrain options there are with where they are going, their choice should not be a percentage number. but should be for the logical sense of what they likely will be engaged by from the enemy with.
I love buildings if the enemy is throwing light mortars and small arms fire at me. I hate them is there is a big gun that has direct fire on them.
I would prefer a wheat field vs a large gun just for the fact it has a terrible time getting a bead on anything lying in the grass.
One of the good things about the game now is just that, terrain choices can now be made for the sake of terrain. Its not a numbers game any more and its time to stop trying to make it one again.

OrdeaL reacted to womble in Terrain?
While I like the way you express your love of wargames, and feel some of the same myself, it's always going to be difficult to exactly determine what "real world behaviour" ought to be. Spotting is a prime example: how long should it take Observer O to spot Subject S at range R in concealment C and weather W and under lighting L? Judgements have to be made, which is why "games about wizards" are more likely to behave logically and model the closed set of rules, because all of that has been arbitrarily assigned by the designer... That the closed set of rules might not be intuitive because it's beyond the player's experience and they've no references from real life doesn't mean that the rules cannot be elucidated to the player. That they are not, in so many fantastical settings, is a fault of game design, not the step away from reality.
The great thing about games set in reality, though is that so many aspects can be made to be intuitive and match the real world, and all we have to elucidate with any precision are the exceptions. It's just hard work to get the simulation right enough to satisfy our intuitive expectations, as BFC prove by being the only wargame at this scale that even comes close.
-
OrdeaL reacted to markshot in Terrain?
You know here is the reason I love war games. I am not former military and I hope that I shall get through life without ever having first hand knowledge of war.
But I love war games as strategy games. I love analysis and problem solving. You could make a game about wizards, but how can anyone say that the game behaves logically and accurately models a closed set of rules? Not possible. However, war games (and some other categories) do need to conform to real world behavior. Thus, they are testable for closed and consistent set of behaviors as implemented by computer code. So, I love them, because they are the ultimate mental exercise about which you can reason. As such, exercises to test the behavior of the engine and modeling are not nit picky and gamey, they are one of the best ways there is to validate the quality of the product to model the real world and deliver a rewarding experience.

Glad that worked (thanks to Shane for passing on the message). Sorry the password reset function isn't working - the technology used for CMMODs is so old now I'm scared to try to fix things like this: easier just to reset manually.
About time we had a brand new site eh?
I can be contacted via forum message here, FWIW.

Allow me to add my personal thanks and congratulations on modding every vehicle in the game, not to mention so much more! As you must know by now, your talent, drive and generosity are greatly appreciated and have added an invaluable amount of increased enjoyment to the experiences of your fellow Black Sea players.
Do you have any interest in modding the small arms and crew served weapons? I think you could do a great job!

OrdeaL reacted to dragonwynn in CMBS Campaign: The Eagle and the Bear
The Eagle and the Bear is a narrative hypothetical campaign of a clash between NATO and Russian forces in the small Baltic country of Latvia. It is a campaign of modern war set in a "could happen" situation where you command a U.S. Combat Brigade through a 7 day struggle for control of the Baltics.
It is designed to be played from the blue side only. Some scenarios are large so it may be slow load times on some systems.
It features 11 scenarios, 9 which are playable based on the outcomes of specific battles. I've tried to include a fair number of combat situations from small infantry engagements, airlift operations, urban battles as well as large sprawling armor engagements.
You take the role of Colonel Mack Barnes, commanding officer of the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team and your mission is to successfully take the brigade as well as other NATO forces through 7 days of modern combat. Below is a list of the scenarios and the campaign path:
Battle 1- Never Cry Wolf
(Win- The Water Dogs
(Lose- Campaign Over)
Battle 2- The Water Dogs
(Win- The Crossroads of Naudaskalns
(Lose- Campaign Over)
Battle 3- Crossroads at Naudaskalns
(Win- FOB Lancer
(Lose- Campaign Over)
Battle 4- FOB Lancer
(Win - Hill 289.7)
(Lose- The Bear at the Gates)
Battle 5- Hill 289.7
(Win- Operation Hammer)
(Lose- The Siege of Balvi)
Battle 6- The Bear at the Gates
(Win- Operation Hammer)
(Lose- Campaign Over)
Battle 7- The Siege of Balvi
(Win - Operation Eagle Strike
(Lose- Campaign Over)
Battle 8- Operation Hammer
(Win- Turning the Tide)
(Lose- Campaign Over)
Battle 9- Operation Eagle Strike
(Win- The Battle of Krievkalns)
(Lose- Campaign Over)
Battle 10 - Turning the Tide
(Win- The Battle of Krievkalns)
(Lose- Campaign Over)
Battle 11- The Battle of Krievkalns
(Win - Victorious)
(Lose - Defeated)
Here is a list of the combatants involved:
NATO:
Latvian 1st Infantry Brigade
Latvian 2nd Infantry Brigade
Polish 2nd Mechanized Battalion
Polish 1st Tank Battalion
Polish 6th Airborne Brigade
1st Stryker Combat Brigade Team
1st Calvary Regiment
3rd Armored Combat Brigade Team (Core Unit)
Soviet 20th Guards Army:
9th Guards Motor Rifle Brigade
5th Guards Motor rifle Brigade
27th Guards Motor Rifle Brigade
16th Spetsnaz Brigade
56th Airborne Brigade
100th Reconnaissance Brigade
6th Guards Tank Brigade
4th Guards Tank Brigade
1st Tank Brigade
(Special Note: Due to game limitations the Latvian forces were taken from the stock Ukrainian forces with standard camouflage. The Polish forces are Ukrainian forces with digital camouflage to distinguish them differently.
The Latvian military primarily uses western equipment so they have been equipped with humvee's mostly. However I used MT-LBM's as their APC's. The Poles have the KTO-Wolverine APC which I used BTR-4E's to simulate these as well as the PT-91 Twardy MBT which is simulated by the BM-Bulat MBT.)
There are a number of personalities besides Col. Barnes that you will meet as the campaign unfolds. Each will play a part.
As with my previous campaign I have included modtags and the needed files. However I do highly recommend Kieme's outstanding CMBS mods to get the full immersion.
I am looking for a few playtesters to check it out and help me weed out any bugs I may have overlooked. If you are interested let me know and I will send you a dropbox link to the campaign to try out.
