  1. Hi Bill, no problem, always happy to lend a hand... and you can be assured that I'm telling my online MP friends about Breakthrough, in fact I've got four email games currently going on right now. -- Dave
  2. Hey guys, I am thoroughly enjoying all the new scenarios for the Breakthrough expansion, and I'm slowly making my way through each one. I noticed a small mistake in the Russia 1914 scenario. Around the March 1915 turn, the game flashes a "news brief" that the Germans have started the Verdun offensive in the west. This is a year early, as the Verdun offensive actually began in February 1916. Other than this, the game is bug-free and a joy to play! Thank you for continuing to support SC WW1, this is by far the best collection of games on WW1 currently available.
  3. I've sent out my first turns to all of my opponents -- isnogud, Sami, Sharkman and rhj1971. I wish all of my fellow league members good luck and happy gaming! Dave
  4. Considering the many hours of enjoyment I've received from the SC franchise, the $25 seems to be just right. Especially considering this upgrade will include the improvements made in the Great War game (my favorite is the faster AI), it's a good return for the money. Thanks Hubert, et. al. for continuing to support and expand this great program!
  5. Hi Hubert/Bill, I'm currently playing my first 1939 SOE campaign as the Axis side vs. AI. It's June 1941 and I've decided to launch an invasion of England. I land several units in England and establish a beachhead. Then, during the Allied turn, I'm informed my invasion has caused "alarm" in the Soviet Union -- which moves the Soviet leaning towards the Allies some 30 points, from about 65 to 97! The Soviets promptly declare war at the end of the Allied turn. I was quite surprised at the jump in Soviet mobilization. Had I known it would be so high, I would definitely have reconsidered Sealion. My question is, what is the average percent change for the Soviets during a German invasion of England? What can be done (other than not invading) to prevent such a jump? And also, a suggestion -- perhaps a warning about this allegiance shift could be added to the 1939 player's guide, to give Axis players a heads up that the USSR's response to a Sealion can be rather extreme!
  6. Hi Hubert, I just wanted to post that I've patched the game up to the 1.03 version. Prior to that, an average AI turn lasted between 14-18 minutes. Now, on average, the AI turn is between 3-4 minutes, and sometimes even faster! Not sure how you did it, but thanks so much for speeding up the AI turn. Before I had to set aside major chunks of time just to get a turn or two in, now I can do multiple turns in the same sitting. Once again you have provided fantastic value for the money! Dave
  7. Wonderful AAR, guys! Thanks for sharing... like someone said upstream, I'm learning some new tactics reading this, so I'll be following your progress with great interest.
  8. I will turn 39 in two days... been playing board wargames since I was 12 and computer wargaming since I started playing "Clash of Steel" in 1993.
  9. Bill, it is well worth purchasing, I think you'll be very happy with it.
  10. I am very much looking forward to the new WW2 add-on. It looks like this will be a fantastic mod... and the fact that you guys are adding it as a free bonus (rather than selling it as an expansion, which would certainly be worth it) is pretty awesome. Thanks for all the hard work, can't wait until we get to try this out. Dave
  11. I just remembered another atlas with lots of good WW1 maps. "The Atlas of Warfare" by Richard Natkiel has a whole chapter devoted to the First World War with lots of clear, concise maps of most of the war's action. While the book is out of print, I found it at reasonable prices on ebay and Amazon. Definitely recommended. Dave
  12. Airboy, thanks so much for an excellent AAR. I am enjoying how you decided to focus on the Russian front first and forgo the early attacks in the west. Looking forward to seeing how this plays out. Dave
  13. Hubert, thanks for the peek at the new mod. While I'm looking forward to it, I'm glad it's not out just yet, as I'm still trying to work through all the WW1 campaigns included in the game. But the mod looks fantastic, and once again thanks for giving such incredible value to your games... as Bossy57322 said above you can't argue with free! Dave
  14. The new changes and features look great... thank you Bill and Hubert for the great support of this game. Now I will have to finish my current game quickly so I can implement the patch! Dave
  15. The Livesey book is currently out of print. However, there are good prices for used copies on Amazon and ebay (I think ebay is where I picked my copy up). Like I said, probably the best WW1 atlas out there. Dave
  16. Hi lettowvorbeck! I have all of the atlases listed above (I collect them), and a few more. The best is "The Historical Atlas of World War I" by Anthony Livesey, with LOTS of great detail and clear, concise maps. "The West Point Atlas of World War I" is pretty good, although it doesn't come with any accompanying text, so it's more for reference. Authur Banks' "Military Atlas of the First World War" is very good, as is Martin Gilbert's "Atlas of World War I." Both are a bit rough as far as the maps are concerned, but have tons of interesting details (like maps of the European rail networks, postwar plans of both the Germans and the Entente, etc.). I also have the Palgrave atlas, but the maps are pretty bad and I don't recommend that one. I'm not at home right now (at work, shhh!), but I'll look through my stuff and see if I missed anything. Dave
  17. Hubert, I assume that when the SCWW1 patch is applied, all pre-patch save games will be rendered unplayable? Dave
  18. Hubert, I think this would be a great addition to SCWW1. It's particularly hard to upgrade infantry units that are in the front lines. This change would make upgrading a lot easier, since moving units out of line wouldn't force a musical chairs shuffle among the units in reserve. I hope you can impliment this feature! Dave
  19. Bill, I wonder if perhaps the Entente player might be offered a decision event for the US when it joins the war, similar to the one offered to the United Kingdom for the Canadians -- namely, either rush troops to Europe with minimal experience levels, or wait (as was done historically) until they have trained and gained more experience. This way, if the Entente player is in really dire straits at the time the US enters the war, more troops might be rushed to the front. (And after all it would be nice if the US got a decision event or two in the campaign game LOL!) Dave
  20. One of the reasons the Germans were eager to sign the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was the desire to secure grain from Ukraine. Perhaps in the event of a Russian surrender, states like Ukraine could be treated like the Netherlands -- given a certain diplomatic point level, that country will open a convoy route to Germany and provide additional MMPs. This would discourage the Central Powers player from just declaring war in order to gain the post-surrender resources. Dave
  21. Jim (Happycat), sorry I got my wires crossed... again, excellent job with the end-of-game summary. Looking forward to more AARs down the road. Dave
  22. I see that you guys have wrapped up the AAR on the blogsite. Kudos to both of you for a very entertaining and informative game (and Bill, I really liked the "alternate history" outcome you wrote at the end of your turn). Perhaps one day you both could switch sides and see how well each fares. Again, thank you. Dave
  23. Hubert, thanks for the reply. Agree with UFC... the SC game engine is incredibily addictive! Dave
  24. Interesting point, Bill. So if you DO go with the option of giving Trieste to Italy, and then later declare war, is there any rise in A-H morale at that point? (This is what I ended up doing in my game, so I'm curious.) Dave
