  1. I just finished the scenario as the Germans and suffered a major defeat. I went for the middle bridges. But I lost 15 platoon leaders before getting out of the woods, mostly to artillery fire. One of the US units in Monschau set up in the church tower claimed 70 casualties alone. I was able to capture the middle bridges and nothing else before I effectively ran out of gas. The scenario petered out with a half hour remaining. I generally pull a unit back once the platoon leader goes down, and the vast majority of my platoon leader casualties were freakish, where they were lost but the rest of the command unit was okay. The scenario is too long to play again, but I would be curious to see how it would end up with fewer platoon leader casualties.
  2. I have a Dell G15 gaming laptop that I purchased last October. Normally, it does very well with all the Battlefront titles, but not this scenario. About 14 turns in, the "Computing Real-Time Action" progress bar got to anywhere between 75-90% complete before crashing to the desktop. I haven't been able to complete a turn successfully since then. I've tried setting the game to favor speed and performance over graphics qualities, but that has not helped. No matter what I try, I cannot get past the 02:46:00 mark of the scenario. I know from reading older forum posts that this scenario is very taxing on even very good gaming rigs, but does anyone have any suggestions that might work?
  3. I've been playing the WWII CM games since the early days, but have ignored modern warfare until the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Obviously, Black Sea represents a major learning curve for someone who hasn't played a modern warfare game since the old Avalon Hill Arab and Israeli Wars title. Several turns into this scenario, I had lost both drones, a helicopter, and my F-16. In real life, I would have pulled the plug right there, but I figured that would be an automatic loss, so I decided to press forward. I laid down a smoke screen in front of objectives Honey Badger and Wolverine and made a mad rush towards Honey Badger. I took Honey Badger at heavy cost, with literally three infantry troopers left. I ended up suffering a major defeat and I was surprised by how many Russians were left on the map at the end. I went back to see what would have happened if I had asked for a cease fire after the F-16 was shot down and I would have suffered a total defeat. But at the end of the day, I'm not convinced that the additional 54 casualties, two tanks, and 10 other vehicles lost was worth the difference between total and major defeat.
  4. Tough one for the Blue force. I crossed the ford on the left but was routed by a counterattack of three Russian tanks. They got into my rear and were foxes in the hen house, destroying several on my Strykers. Through Javelins, precision artillery, and the helicopter, I was able to eliminate them. I was able to cross the ford on the right and proceeded to Objective Alpha, thinking that I had eliminated most of the Russian forces. It turned out that they had plenty of healthy infantry left and I was unable to get a foothold on the objective. I suffered a tactical defeat, which didn't surprise me given the number of Russians left on the map at the end. I destroyed about 30 tanks and BMPs and had almost no ammo left. Infantry alone could not be expected to win at that point. As I said, it's a tough scenario.
  5. I did very poorly on this one. My plan was to move to contact, hit the Germans with mortar fire and wait for the SU-76s before pressing forward. Instead, I took too many casualties moving to contact and then lost all my SU-76s to mines before they did much of anything. The outcome was already a foregone conclusion with 30 minutes left.
  6. I lost three Panthers early to what I thought was a lone SU-76. I took a broad front approach with six tanks figuring that the Soviet SP would not be able to get too many shots off if it had to rotate its hull to engage various targets. Even as I learned from other units with LOS that the SP was really an SU-122, I still figured I was in pretty good shape. I ended up getting five of my tanks knocked out within a single turn and the survivor got knocked out one turn later. They never saw what hit them. It wasn't until after the scenario was over that I realized I wasn't facing a lone SU-122, but four of them along with two JS-1s. It didn't help that my air support did nothing but inflict massive friendly-fire casualties in that scenario either.
  7. In ten plus years of CM, this is the first scenario I've ever played where I just gave up and requested a ceasefire. I lost all four Brummbars within 10 minutes. I took out one Sherman on the first or second turn but the other kept scoring repeated hits taking out the optics of two of the Brummbars and then destroying them before they could get effective shots off in return. The third just blew up from a Sherman round and the fourth was lost to CAS. Three of the four where taken out by frontal hits. Frankly, a platoon of Panthers would have performed better.
  8. Usually, it's Australian war movies where the villains are always the English regardless of who the war is being fought against. Were I English, I would be annoyed at putting Americans in movies solely for the sake of the box office where Americans had little to do with that aspect of the war. Bridge on the River Kwai and the Great Escape are both guilty of that sin. However, there is also the abortion that was U-571 that really did twist history to make the American involvement in capturing the Enigma machine something it wasn't. As far as Montgomery is concerned, I suspect most Americans view him as a more successful version of the excessively cautious George McClellan, who also shared with Montgomery an unjustified out of control egotism.
  9. I suppose I could have used it as a pre-planned mission, but once the game starts I have a bad habit of never getting my FOs in position to do anything before they get seen and killed. In this one a well planned Allied artillery strike took mine out before he had a chance to see anything. Once I really got going, my Panthers were able to fire at will into the Allied foxholes and I didn't really feel the need to halt and wait for an artillery mission.
  10. I just finished this scenario this morning. I attacked down the left and actually never used any of my artillery. It took me forever to get my infantry where I wanted I before I launched my main assault with only 30 minutes remaining. Unknowingly, I had already knocked out all but two Allied tanks before starting my main assault. I then pretty much swept all before me without much resistance. I only got a tactical victory, probably because I didn't get enough troops off the map. My casualties were about twice as heavy as the OP's were. I only lost one Panther but suffered at least five disabled guns (something of a pet peeve of mine where I seem to get a lot of one-shot, one-kills on my main armament).
  11. Err, yeah, vineyards. I got locked in on the title of the thread.
  12. I'm in the middle of "Hot Mustard" and found out the hard way about orchards. Three Tigers immobilized in one turn and a fourth immobilized one turn later after finding it was too late to get out.
  13. I've read some of Beevor's stuff and liked it. He puts a fresh enough take on subjects that have already been covered by the likes of Cornelius Ryan that his books are still interesting reads. I am not familiar with Beevor's criticisms of MacArthur; however, I just finished David Halberstam's "The Coldest Winter" which just savages MacArthur and his staff not only for mismanaging the drive to the Yalu but also for the general culture surrounding his headquarters. I have never read a book more critical (so critical it came across as biased, even if well supported by the facts) of a military commander.
  14. Back where I can look up the stats. Game was on Iron level against the AI. GB German Men ok: 278 - 602 Men killed: 355 - 192 Men wounded: 164 - 92 Men missing: 4 - 11 Tanks lost: 114 - 26 Armored vehicles lost: 41 - 17 Other vehicles lost: 1 - 5
  15. I just finished this as the Germans and won a major victory. The Allied attack came quickly through Four and the Germans there were ultimately overwhelmed. The right wing of the first Panthers to arrive was stopped cold, but the left wing was able to use the bocage as cover to circle around Four. The Allied tanks poured forward but were annihilated by Panther reinforcements. The panzers I had circle around Four were able to get behind the left wing of Allied tanks parked behind the bocage and destroy them. At that point I thought I had killed all the Allied tanks, but I started losing a large number of Panthers. My efforts to mop up the Allied tanks behind the bocage on the right side of Four failed. There were about ten left at the end of the game. I don't remember the casualty figures, but I lost about 29 Panthers. The Allies suffered well over 100 tanks destroyed. Had I been more careful with smoke, I would not have suffered as many tank losses as I did. As it was, I lost my last remaining good order Panther on the last turn of the game. I withdrew all the other Panthers to safety after their main guns/optics were knocked out. The Firefly is a lethal opponent. Much like "Breaking the Panzers" it was one of those scenarios where even if you end up with a major or total victory, the battle seesaws back and forth to where you really don't know who has the upper hand until very late.
