Oh, T-62s incoming again. Did you read what I replied to you?

You also still haven't answered my initial questions - who Russian military needs to be better than, and in what?

It is a very good point, if you can establish the idea of tanks always riding in the same column with BTRs as a solid fact. Which it is not.

Again, I'm having an impression that you did not read my previous answers to you, where I gave you the numbers of BMP-2 and BMP-3 available.

Aaaand again. That's a wrong statement. First, because, as I've said, Russia is the biggest country in the world, and it needs to cover all it's borders. Second, it's wrong because the size of Russian Armed Forces is shrinking every year, while trading numbers for more quality, in both personnel and equipment.

If you're referring to BMPT Terminator, it's a purely export product. And I don't think anything is done by state. All manufacturers are OJSCs, AFAIK, and work both for internal and external markets.

I do understand that you're busy IRL, but please, can you read my posts before replying?

We dont even know what kind of data the game uses. Does it take into account that the T-90AM CITV has the same TI than the gunner.. What are the ways the game takes into account sensor capabilities and which estimation of performance is used ? We dont. There is no way to know if its realistic or not, one way or the other. Russian soldiers are actually told not to discuss their training standards and its enforced . They did mention on the english russia site that they now regularly do live fire exercices . They are not very forthcoming So we have to guess even on that so imagine technical caracteristics of in service equipment. So much we dont know and so much estimation is done that some bias is unavoidable. People are still arguing if russian optics in late world war II were pieces of crap for god's sake.

Battlefront caters to a western audience so its normal that if some bias is present, it will favor NATO because its human nature and Battlefront is a business. They wont aleniate their customer base when they have the luxury of favoring a pro American bias over giving the benefit of the doubt to russian capabilities when making educated guesses. As long as the game isnt too lopsided and some level of realism is achieved, ie: America is probably superior in many fields but not overwelmingly so to keep the game balanced.

Nah, much harder getting information on (for example) IFVs, just because no one really cares. There are plenty of treadheads running around that people make good money writing articles, publishing books and releasing juicy tidbits of information on main battle tanks. Not so much for CV090s or LAV-IIIs.

If they would just take a knee they have an AT weapon, and have a target armor cover arc, it would cover eighty or ninety percent of the problem cases.  I admit there would still be some hair pullers, but the above is very straight forward to program.

DreDay reacted to akd in Javelin won't fire on soft targets
AI player doesn't fire on area targets, it either uses mission designer orders (i.e. target armor arc) or TacAI targeting. There is no problem with the TacAI not using AT weapons on soft targets (unless stressed), which was the big problem recognized initially. The problem now is when a player makes a judgement that a threat is Javelin worthy and cannot explicitly order the team to fire on it, because the game has to protect us from ourselves. (Sure that ATGM is probably going to kill one of your Strykers, but no, you aren't allowed to fire a Javelin on it. There might be a tank just around the corner, and you can't be trusted to make that call.)

The change to TacAI targeting was good. The total prohibition for player-placed targets is bad because it is not necessary. It's a solution looking for a problem.

The TacAI will occasionally use Javelins against soft targets in extremis, but the player cannot order it. It is deliberate, not a bug. A request has been made to change it to where the player can order it but it hasn't happened so far.

Steve I honestly don't have the time or the interest to go through your multi-page tirades (75% of which seem to be self-reflective notes and are of no value to me what so ever).

My point is pure and simple – your "analysis" (which IMHO is not a right word to use for what you do) is biased and slanted. Every single one of your arguments on the subject that I've read is formulated with intent of making excuses for the Ukrainian side; marginalizing any of our (Western) responsibility for the mess that’s going on there, and accusing the Russians of all the ills. You speak on those matters with position of authority, which is definitely backed up by extensive research; but not by any kind of original ideas or conclusions (which is why I propose that you follow a formulated model). This wouldn’t be too bad on its own (especially if you were writing this on a Russian forum), if your model and your conclusions were not the exact replicas of what we are already fed in our mass media… so I have to question the value and overall benefit of all the research that you have done. That’s my personal take on it (and let’s just say that I am no scrub when it comes to this subject matter either), but it appears that many other forum members who have tried to take you up on this (many of whom are actually from the areas in question, have studied the conflict no less than you, and happen to have first-hand exposure to what you read about on Google-translate from some blogger-de-jure) ; but you either shut them up as “Russian Propaganda” (thankfully you have not put me into that bracket yet), or drag them into your endless debates where you never allow yourself to deviate from the model and dismiss other people’s views (including personal accounts) as less relevant than your beliefs (that’s where I see myself fitting in right now). This makes for a very dull and one-sided debate that might be enjoyable to you, but few others.

I have been warned by several forum members (who are obviously smarter than me) to avoid getting into debates with you on this subject due to their complete fruitlessness, but I saw it otherwise. Now I hear their point loud and clear. So if you consider someone bowing out of the debating you because they see it as fruitless and don’t get any enlightenment from it, then by all means call it “avoiding the tough questions” and “running away”… as I’ve said to another poster here – I certainly would not lose any sleep over it…

I am sorry if the above sounds harsh, but that is my honest take on your self-imposed status of an expert and a moral authority on “All Things Ukraine”.

I do very much enjoy your games and I hope that our disagreement here would not lead to your (and your colleagues’) response to my (technical and much more tangible) suggestions in game-related threads - which in the past has been stellar and is very much appreciated and valued by this loyal customer.

I can't catch your logic. How do you differ uprising at maidan in Kiev where people stand up by themselves and uprising in the east of Ukraine wich was lead by Russia? 100 thousand of people at maidan have to have thousands of toilets for monthes. They have to remove waste for monthes. They have to eat for monthes. This was not possible without support and organization. Do not tell me that unorgonized people can do anything against goverment forces in 21 century.

Let's compare outcomes of unsupported and unorganized people uprising in Paris 2005 or London 2011 or Madrid 2014 or оcсupy wall street actions, with supported and well organizede uprising of people in Libia, Syria etc and finaly Ukraine.

Russia did nothing in Ukraine for 20+ years. This is why all this can happen. It was not Russia who spent 5 billions in Ukraine. Russia was busy with it's own problems.

The previous elections was legitimate. It was confirmed by international observers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_presidential_election,_2010#International_observers
Meanwhile It is previous Maidan (Puts Yuschenko in the president's chair at 2004) wich did not fix the problems you are talking.

This is a bla-bla words about "all get along". Let's try to look at what countries of the world do rather than what they say. Suddenly it is just not possible to "get all along" only when there is some resources under the ground and the goverment is not our guys. Who cares about death penalties for homosexual acts in Saudi Arabia? Anybody care about quality of life there? It is not Russia who belive in world domination. World domination is done by someone else. Russia has all possible resources on it's own territory. Russia is one of very few countries who can get along indeed.

Finally this is very offtopic here. I am sorry for that. I will not continue here.

We all can see results of encouraging in Libia, Syria, Egypt, Tunisia etc. It was predictable in Ukrain also. May be better option for people to not encourage them? Nobody will have to prevent in this case? May be better to not interfere into internal politics of other countries?

I have no doubt that all people in the world would like to live better. There has to be better way, other than burn their country into ashes. And I think I know much better then 1/10 what has been life in Ukraine (sorry for my English one more time). It has been much better than today. Definitly.

There were some months to new elections. There was no need for a Maidan.

I´m from Argentina and I can tell you that having a conscript army didn´t prevent a single military coup in the 20th century (if you really want to look at it, start with the first coup in the modern sense in 1930 and laugh or cry your way to the last one in 1976-83 and every other folly in between)

Latin America in general experienced long decades of high levels of political instability from local an foreign factors, coups were common occurrences, having conscript units didn´t prevent Generals to turn the Army into a de facto occupation force on it`s own soil, enough NCOs and low and mid level officers went along just fine with every crime and atrocity committed for various reasons, too long to go into in this thread

We now have a volunteer armed forces, there`s no more conscription since the early 90s and the probability of a military coup has never been lower than in the last hundred years

There are social, economical and political considerations for or against one model or the other, but I would venture to say that the composition of the armed forces is a relatively small factor on the odds of a constitutional breakdown, at least in modern times

I would put more value on universal civic education, general awareness of civic and political rights, the ability of civilian political entities of managing internal conflict, etc.

Of course I will not post here anymore as apparently it is pointless. Every John Doe living thousands of miles away, not understanding the language, not knowing anyone personally and who has never been to Ukraine or Crimea, is suddenly an expert on Ukraine, but people who understand Russian and Ukrainian and having their cities swarmed by Ukrainian 'students' are suddenly internet trolls. If you question the validity of Azov picture go to Lviv to one of the Right Sector pubs, you're gonna get more along with personal autographs.

Your understanding what is going on in Ukraine and Europe is well...lacking at best. Half dozen of Region Party politicians committed 'suicide' since the beginning of the year, corruption is bigger than before, all anti-maidan people living on Ukraine are devoid of any parliamentary representation and I read that Ukraine is building 'democracy'. Greece is demanding enormous war reparations from Germany on top of its poor economical situation and I will not even start on potential conseqences - enough to say that Europe could be on the brink of biggest crisis in its most modern history - but yeah, it is going to 'rebuild' Ukraine no matter how much it is destroyed.

Please also consider tagging this forum in an appropriate way so everyone knows which side is 'right' and 'wrong' and what the 'propaganda' is. Great way to prevent trolls from posting! Fox news would be proud!

I personally tend to agree with your assessment... but it's a matter of faith and nothing more; I just wanted to point out that it is a bit controversial and should not be automatically assumed to be 100% truthful... Then again, that's about the most first-hand information about Russian Ops in Donbas that we have seen in the printed media; so what choice do we have but to take it seriously?

DreDay reacted to akd in Russian motor rifle disposable RPGs and rifle optics
The thing about these newer disposable AT weapons, and why they may not have much enthusiastic application in the Russian ground forces, is that aren't really lighter than the RPG-7, and are significantly less flexible. The RPG-26 is less than half the weight of the RPG-7, so it makes a lot of sense for situations where the RPG-7 is too much weight or encumbrance. RPG-27 on the other hand weighs more than the RPG-7 launcher, and is only moderately lighter than the RPG-7 launcher plus PG-7VR warhead with the exact same potential terminal performance. And the RPG-28 is a ridiculous monster of a "LATW" weighing more than an RPG-7 and PG-7VR combined. For less weight than the RPG-28, you could carry an RPG-7 launcher with a PG-7VR and an HE warhead.

I've read a bit about what constitutes the standard Disposable anti-tank rocket for the russian motor-rifle troops. It's the RPG-26 because it is small and light. However, the RPG-27 was adopted to supplement it and packs a 105mm  tandem warhead, I wonder if it would be made available as a resupply item in BTRs and BMPs (or ammo trucks) so you may acquire it . It is heavier and bulkier so you may have a weight penalty for the troops (not as heavy as the Javelin though). It would give russian infantry more punch and is not un-realistic. I also believe the RPG-28 (1000m+ of penetration) is also available but maybe only for the VDV,

ALso, from what was said here in the forums, both the squad leader and his assistant have scopes much like they are the only ones with radios. Maybe in a next patch.

This has already been debated on several occasions. The proponents of SOF in CMBS (myself included) are not expecting to see some SWAT-like ninjas who free hostages and clear buildings "Kill-house style". We are proposing higher trained and better concealed sniper, recon, and assault teams whose standards of training and morale  go beyond what is simulated (for regular infantry units) in CM; and who use suppressed and silenced weapons making them so much more difficult to spot and to track down. I personally feel that those types of units can fit into CMBS quite organically...

You are making a lot of false assumptions here. The notion that Donbass has nothing to contribute to the world is not any more grounded than saying that Ukraine has nothing to contribute either. You (nor I) don't get to be the judges of that. As far as Ukraine is concerned, they badly need the coal, metallurgy and other industrial goods that come out of Donbass; not to mention their strategic sea ports and rail lines.... I am sure that many people would have thought that Israel would have nothing to contribute to the world at the time of their independence struggle; or most of former Yugoslav states, or the Baltics; but that is not for you or I to decide. What ultimately determines the success or failure of a separatist movement is the strength of its supporters (and outside backers) vs. the strength of Federal (if that term can be applied to Ukraine) forces (and their backers).

The US Revolutionary war example was far-fetched, I'll give you that. It was simply used to illustrate a point that separatism does not need to get spurred up by genocidal policies of the "mother-country". In regards to Donbass, Kosovo is probably a much more relevant (and recent) example to follow. So are you proposing that we give back Kosovo back to Serbia? I would think not... so what makes Donbass so different?

I have already spent more than enough time on this board trying to show "the flip side of the coin" to those members that actually care to hear it and to process it as part of their analysis. I absolutely would not waste a spare second of my time trying to build out an argument to someone who does not care to show any knowledge nor appreciation of what is being discussed here. How about you show me some solid facts about "Putin-bots" spewing their propaganda on this board; and maybe then I will consider engaging you in a more meaningful conversation. John, I can completely appreciate and identify with what you are saying. It is extremely difficult, and many scholars would say "completely impossible" to study and analyze the policies of foreign states without knowing their language and having some on-site exposure to their culture. I very much appreciate you acknowledging this point.

I did not mean to criticize your post, but rather to point out that Russian SSO (and other spec ops and VDV units) involvement in annexation of Crimea is pretty much a given; and no serious scholar/observer would try to debate that... Of course, that does not contradict the fact that the overwhelming majority of Crimeans wanted nothing to do with Ukraine post-Maidan either...
