  1. Have you played a person yet? The AI is OK are sneaky devious and a lot better a generally messing up your day.
  2. Sorry I am late to the party. I am the other half of this battle and since kinophile asked about the timing I will go over what happened with this engagement. It is a little complicated. I will go by the turn countdown timer, we are at 38:36 when the BMP-2M spots the tank. 38:35, the vehicle turns towards the tank, and the gunner is aiming, the 30mm is the current weapon 38:34 1st Squad/A team first an RPG-26 which hits the tank, it gets pretty confusing here as B team also fires three RPG-26's, all miss. I am sure of the hit but not which team did it. 38:31 The gunner fires a set of 30mm which hits the front of the tank but does no damage that I can tell 38:30 gunner is aiming, ATGM selected 38:27 2nd Squad B team fires and RPG 7 tandem round which hits the reactive armor, again, no damage that I can tell. The tank has turned it's turret to the left and fires some MG rounds at my infantry 38:23 gunner fires the ATGM flight time is 1 second, the round hits the Superstructure Front Hull and penetrates. The gunner continues to fire bursts of 30mm until the turn ends.
  3. I don't know the in game ATGM's at all, do any of them now have more than one ammo type? Modeling what is loaded into the launcher will be difficult if the crew is 50m away and you want to switch to an HE round. Line if sight would have to be modeled from the launcher, not the crew. Being able to deploy the launcher on the top of a building and move the crew behind the building would be a huge advantage.
  4. I always follow the tried and true system of never send a sqaud where a scout team has not gone. Never send a platoon were a squad has not gone. Your vehicles should generally be at the rear. They only have to advace if they do not have a weapon that can provide effective fire to cover your advancing teams. A tank or IFV can sit back at several thousand meters if it has good enough weapons and a clear line of sight. You should learn how to use UAV's in conjonction with artillery, they are possibly the most powerful item in your arsenal
  5. lol, a friend of mine had a1950's tank periscope. We used it for LOS.
  6. I am a long time lurker here, having started with CM:BO. I lost my original forum name sometime between CM:AK and SM:SF. I also play other games in addition to Normandy and Black Sea. One of those is Arma 3. The beauty of Arma 3 is how much it can be customized with mods. I currently am a member of Response Force Alpha We are a fictitious NATO Special Ops unit. We chose a fictitious unit out of respect for current or recent ACTUAL military members. We are a year old at this point, but still under strength and I though it might be interesting for some of the members here if they play ARMA 3 to check out the group. If you are interested in checking us out, look at the link above or watch one or two of the videos listed on this page video We have some restrictions on membership, namely you must be over 30 years of age. (although we allow younger members to join but we keep a close eye on them). We do missions slowly, and by the book. About half of our members are prior military. We have a small aviation team, and a single ground team. We would like to add enough people to add a second ground team. If you are interested PM me or post on our forum.
  7. Guilty. I have been around since the start but lost my original login for some reason I no longer remember. I used to post a lot, but have since moved on to other games and forums. I always some back here though since really CM is the best mix of gameplay size and subject for my gaming.
  8. Considering Russia's recent war with Georgia I would like to see the Georgian Army added.
  9. Below is the link ot the dtic.mil download. http://www.dtic.mil/cgi-bin/GetTRDoc?AD=ADA293440 http://www.slideshare.net/BrianLucke/the-us-army-squad-foundation-of-the-decisive-force is an interesting slideshare on the current US Army Squad that may cover some of the period you asked about. I think it's interesing that as part of Force XXI they considered reducing the squad to 7 men, with the assumption that technology would help make up the difference. In the end however they stuck with 9 men.
  10. I am always amazed at the great dialog that goes on here. So one other thought occurred to me, does any of this change if the opponent has on some form of body armor? I don't recall the insurgents having it in CMSF. Do Russian or Ukrainian troops have any form of protection?
  11. I recently read an article that stated the Taliban would open an engagement with RPG's and PKM's (7.62x54R) at ranges of 900m. NATO forces had very little they could respond with at the platoon level. One thing to remember is that while the US keeps developing new ammo for the 5.56mm the barrel length on the M4 and Mk18 are much shorter than the standard M-16. I think the issue is not one of the M16 as a platform but more of the 5.56mm as a general purpose cartridge. This article makes some good points http://www.sadefensejournal.com/wp/?p=778
  12. IIRC the M-10's gun was adapted from the 3" Naval anti aircraft gun. So using a naval AA shell would have been no problem. On the other point of swapping HVAP rounds I am going to speculate that the Sherman crews where swapping with Hellcat units since they both use the same gun. I suspect the shells were interchangeable however, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3in_Gun_M5 HVAP is listed as APCR-T
  13. Sorry to be a late comer to the discussion. I have been around since the begining (sorry, I don't recall you either) but now have a new user name due to losing my password, and changing computers twice since CMBO. I have a few suggestions regarding searching for yourself and your old user name. If you are still on the same PC, or have access your original one. Try dumping your old mail program database and doing some searching for anything related to Combat Mission. This might give you other user name, or your user name. You should look especially for any e-mails from battlefront which might have a message regarding your account or PM's you got on the board. If that is a no go, try using the search function here for variations on your real name and see if you can come up with your old user name. Do you recall if you have a signature? I see if I can think of any other ways to come up with the info. If you want you can PM me for help with the e-mail exporting. I have friends at work that do computer forensics who should be able to give me the low down in no time.
  14. What about doing a color contour map based on the height form the editor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Contour3D.jpg it would be ugly as home made sin and not a "period" looking solution but if you want to convey data about height nothing is better than color.
  15. Nice idea, instead of having the teams of a squad in adjacent squares have the separated by at least one square, that should do the trick. Might even be nice to have a toggle for 0,1,2 square separation. Until then I guess you could separate the squad into teams and move them as a group manually.
  16. I like these and will throw in, when a tank is immobilized by a hit to the running gear it run the tracks off the rollers. Also could we fix the dead guys that are leaning at 45 degrees, it freaks me out.
  17. Someone posted earlier to do a quick battle and purchase both side. This way you can balance the forces and know what your up against. I go one farther and say set it up as attack/defend and then play both sides in a hotseat wego. Set up your defense. Then dont move anyone again, just observe how the fire of your attackers in suppressing them. Work the attack as carefully as possible with all the ideas from this thread (and there are lots of them here). As you switch back and forth from german to american you can see how your spotting is going and how much you really have spotted. You will also know how the fire is really effecting the enemy and how suppressed they really are.
  18. This tool has been around for a very long time, I have never tried it but it might fit the operational level. http://www.hpssims.com/Pages/products/adc2/ADC2-Main.html I also enjoy making maps and would be willing to do some. (despite my post count I have been hanging out here since CM:BO)
