  1. I've downloaded Romm's file and put in in my Scenarios folder, but it doesn't appear as an option when I select Battle in the game. Am I missing something?
  2. Well, there is the screenshot. This is after the screen with the photomontage, and I "press any key to continue." You can see that those top three buttons are visible, but not the ones at the bottom of the dialog box. The wouse works, but none of the buttons are active. Hope this helps. Haven't gotten around to trying Wine v1.1.9 yet.
  3. Well... To summarize: Yes, I'm screwed. The 64-bit thing is killing me, and Redwolf is WAY over my head, when he starts talking about $PATH and other godlike functions. Thanks for trying. I'll be there some day, with "some day" defined as "some decade", but my real life prohibits my spending an awful lot of time messing around with my computer right now. You know, I started with Fedora when I was first getting into this Linux thing, and I eventually switched to Ubuntu because it was so popular and I figured that it would be easier to get support for it, find packages in .deb format, etc. Do you think Fedora is better for a neophyte? One thing that REALLY annoys me about Ubuntu is the whole "there is no root account" thing. Sure, sounds like a decent idea, but sometimes it makes it bloody cumbersome to move files around, etc. For one thing it just CAN'T BE DONE in the GUI- you MUST use command line. This is a serious failing, in my opinion, given the stated goal of making a Linux distro for "everyman." (This is sort of the same permissions problem Yossarian mentioned.) Sorry I vented at you, by the way, Yossarian. But the next time some stuck-up 16-year-old in Helsinki tells me to RTFM I'm going to ping him, hunt him down, and kneecap the little prick. I generally don't ask for help unless I'm stuck, which means I have read as much as I can find. But, as I said, the manuals are usually unintelligible, and sometimes it can be hard to find previous posts about your problem on the forums, etc. The nice thing about Linux is that there is a very helpful community available. I figure that if someone can walk me through a few of these problems that I'll learn a lot, and need less help in the future. That's the whole reason I bought DropTeam- I figured that if I could get some relatively graphics-intense tactical game working that I'd learn tons. But I guess my 64-bit machine sunk that. Is this why I can't get Warsow working either? Does anyone know a decent game that WILL work in 64-bit? Scorched 3D has gotten a little old... Thanks, again, everyone.
  4. Sorry... My real life interfered for a while. I'm not using any arguments. I'm just typing: wine TacOps4.exe Okay, I give up. How do I post an image? Do I have to load it into Snapfish or Photobucket or something like that? (I hate that. It's annoying.) I have a screenshot, if only I could post it.
  5. Well, crap! Yes, I run a 64-bit machine, with 64-bit Ubuntu v8.04 LTS. What the %#$#& is an "ELF class"? Am I screwed? I'm currently struggling with trying to run TacOps in Wine, too. I think the 64-bit thing is generally causing a lot of my problems. No offense, Yossarian, but you gave one of the standard extremely frustratings answer that we newbies encounter when dealing with you Linux gurus: "install it." Well, no kidding! That doesn't help, because as I explained in my first post I can't even get it installed, and usually I can at least manage that. So how do you install it? And please do not tell me to RTFM! I already RTFM, and there is no M on this: no decent installation instructions were included. (And, frankly, all Linux M are utterly unintelligible to a newbie, anyway, so I generally dismiss anyone who says RTFM as an insecure and puerile boob who is trying to impress people with how smart he is.) Sometimes we neophytes just need a hand. For the record: I do have the driver installed for my Nvidia 8800, and I do use bash.
  6. Well, that is how I thought I HAVE to start Wine. Here it is: dean @dean-desktop:~/.wine/drive_c/TacOps$ wine TacOps4.exe fixme:mixer:ALSA_MixerInit No master control found on USB Device 0x46d:0x990, disabling mixer fixme:msg: pack_message msg 14 (WM_ERASEBKGND) not supported yet fixme:wave:wodPlayer_Reset shouldn't have headers left I had to edit some spaces into this to avoid having the forum software "help" by turning the first line into an email link and injecting a smiley face into the middle of the third line. I hope you can still use it.
  7. I've got a nvidia 8800. Under System>Administration>Hardware Drivers it says I've got a driver for it installed (which was automatically installed when I installed Ubuntu) but doesn't give a version number. I could fire up EnvyNG and see if something more recent pops up?
  8. Wow. I bought DropTeam as a sort of exercise to learn Linux better. Obviously I still have a lot to learn. I have moved all of the InstallData file to a folder on my machine called DropTeamSetup, and decompressed LinuxBinaries.zip.bz2. NOW WHAT? Nothing will run, and there are no instructions that I can find. If I try to run LinuxInstall I get this error: dean@dean-desktop:~/Desktop/DropTeamSetup$ ./runLinuxInstall ./InstallData/bin/LinuxInstall: error while loading shared libraries: libaa.so.1: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64
  9. Hmm. I wonder why Synaptic Package Manager only found v1.0.0? I'm sure I can find a deb package of a later version, though, if you really think it will help. Anyway, yes I get the first screen with the montage of pictures and the bugle call plays, so the sound appears to work. I then "hit any key" as instructed and I get the opening screen where you can pick single player, etc. But I can't check any boxes. (And, in fact, the other buttons on the bottom of the dialog box aren't there- I forget what they do.) The mouse cursor moves, but the screen is inactive. When I try to quit with the X button on the window frame I get a "this program is not responding" box, and I have to Force Quit to stop the process. No, I run a 64-bit machine, and installed the 64-bit version of Ubuntu. For what it's worth, TacOps runs fine on my 64-bit version of XP. Thanks for the help.
  10. As I said, I am kind of a Linux amateur. I'm running the current LTS version of Ubuntu, which as I recall is v8.04 Hardy Heron, and I do the updates religiously. (I was wrong when I said it was "Ibis.") I used Synaptic Packet Manager and searched for "wine". I then checked all the appropriate boxes and installed it. This was v1.0.0, so it isn't the latest (which, I think, is v1.0.1). I have not installed any new DLLs- I just have the DLLs or pseudo-DLLs that came with Wine. I have played around with wineconfig extensively- using the GUI interface to change settings. As I mentioned, TacOps always hangs up after the opening graphic and bugle clarion. My system is dual-boot (I haven't yet defenestrated completely), so I can still play on XP. I just wanted to learn Wine, since it seems so ubiquitous and useful. Compiling from source is almost certainly beyond me. Sorry. Heck, I can't even get DropTeam to run in Ubuntu! I'm still trying to puzzle that one out, too, since I also bought it as sort of a learning aid for Linux. But the install instructions are useless. It's three lines! I guess I'm having the usual Linux neophyte issues...
  11. Howdy, just bought the game. Since it isn't graphics-intensive I thought that it would be a good candidate to try to learn how to use Wine in Ubuntu Linux (ibis). No luck. I used Wine v1.0 tried emulating as XP, 98, and a few others. The same thing always happens: The screen with all the pictures shows up with the bugle call, I hit a key to go to the first menu and it locks up. Not all the buttons on the start menu are visible, either: just the three at the top where you pick Solitaire or the other two modes. The mouse cursor still moves. Huh. So much for learning Wine. I can't even find any advice when I google "Wine TacOps" because there's some annoying FPS called Tactical Ops that fills pages and pages of results- but nothing for TacOps. Couple of other questions: The only AH1 that comes with the game is armed with Hellfires. Why no version with TOWs? This would be useful for 1980s battles, and other modern users. Ther is no "i" version for the AT-12, AT-13, AT-14, AT-15, and AT-16. I assume that this is because the real weapons qualify as "improved warheads" already- right? So if I want to play with the "OPFOR Improved ATGM Warheads" button off I can still kill M1s with my Kornets- right? Thanks.
