  1. You need to launch into a blackened out area or land area where you can not move. I really think this should be changed to allow staying in position and launching planes without this tactic. Again test in hotseat or playing computer turn 1 with Japs until you get a better understanding of this.
  2. Not sure really of your comments as China is allies and I am axis, and how China would get into the Baltic. However I am assuming from our point in the game you are talking about Japanese amphib boats on the way to their invasion points in the Pacific and perhaps you have british or commonwealth naval against it. Only way to attack would be to declare war. I highly recommend against this as this allows Japan a free launch against British empire without the US.
  3. I recommend playing around with it, and say this because for some reason you are not allowed to launched in areas not blacked out which I think is a bug. You can send them out into blackened areas your 1st launch, and then 2nd launch anywherel Spotting without planes - Carriers in their position without extra long-range ability can see 1 spot and +1 for each long range tech. Spotting with planes - Carriers can launch 5 spots +1 for each tech
  4. Need to use a multi-ship patrol protecting the carrier or they are vulnerable. Usually probe with destroyers, cruisers, and bring in Carriers (possibly BB) staying protected within the circle. Carriers have natural 1 spotting range but with upgrades through tech can have 3. Other ways carriers can spot is by using them to search with your planes themselves, and if lucky can use the 2nd launch for attack or go in carrier packs with 1 searching and others attacking. In the Pacific though need to be wary and usually have multiple carriers with 1 or more always in fighter support of the fleet.
  5. Lofty12 if you are talking about our game and Japan Amphib, you need to be at war with them. If not what is the situation?
  6. I agree with your thinking there strategiclayabout. Normally I do not do for more realistic gameplay but occasionally do some scouting. A good trick is to bring in reinforced long distance carrier to within a few tiles of the location which you do not even need to be parked. Usually 1 carrier of mine for Japan is sent in the sea between Rabaul, Port Moresby, and the solomons. So getting rid of the next to tile assault would only be partially a fix.
  7. Sorry, overall though see a pretty even game that reflects reality for the most part. Looking for improvement yet if justified. Thanks Hubert and team for a great game! Best yet!
  8. Not sure I agree with all talk. Feel the game is mostly in balance beyond carriers only myself. Yes transports could go all the way in as the Hornet did to Japan (albeit a distance away) and the Japanese did to Pearl Harbor. If your opponent has the guts to go all the way in so be it, plan for it or improvise. That is the chances of the game and why we play the game hoping it can be different every time. It is initiative and chances taken and succeeding in this game and keeping it. Besides there are generally reactions to invasions of US/Australia/Japan/England where there should be due to national pride. Italy is a different story in WW2. Japanese really should have a chance to take their objectives and what is talked about above would really limit them to not do per the real war or have a chance to actually help the axis when the war. Should they not have a chance, albeit perhaps a limited chance. Do not really want to play a game where you start and it is called, Allies win! If your opponent reacts to you more than they to you, you are already have a good chance to win. What does it matter if a transport goes all the way in, you get a response. In this game the differences game be in my mind depending on the play due to Soviet lower strength, and carrier over powered.
  9. Great forum and credit for playing it out knowing defeat was inevitable with the games restraints! Not much to say on the point of disappointing that it is clear the Axis are on the ascending position and yet lose. This would not be a reality of WW1 and of any war in my mind. The public would recognize through all the propaganda perhaps in the past that this would be a true situation and would ride out the situation for days/weeks/months until they see otherwise. What is seen with this PBEM is the axis would win if played out. Great game, and terrific presentation!
  10. Actually the US did plan a paratroop attack on Rome together with their amphibious assaults on Salerno but wisely scrapped at the time. In this game though there are possible alternatives allowed to support such assault by taking Sardinia/Corsica to allow air support and itself would realistically allow logistic support more north then the allies actually landed in the toe which was idiotic in itself as it demanded a slog up north. However to all persons points on here it would seem logical for game play that Italy is given a 2nd capital as Rome can be easily taken with combined assault, and also the other capitals mentioned. Carrier support as mentioned by Al are too devastating to land units. I could envision something different such as carrier support vs. continental units being less than carrier support vs. islands. Carrier support can be game changing either in the French campaign, Africa campaign, and China battle and in the future the Italy/Japanese/French campaign for allies. Carriers are needed against islands as there is no alternative but they should not be so decisive against continental areas and I would consider London/Tokyo being continental for game purposes.
  11. Have not seen any Italian shots of late. Good job on AAR as Will and you always do a terrific job!
  12. Hi Al, No offense taken:). Early moves can be critical and should not be allowed at times you are correct and should be changed. Does not help you so far in our games is the weather but time will tell with that and the games. You already made up some ground in your move through the mountains south of Paotow as I was content with the rest of my China defense until then.
  13. Something needs changed altogether in Japan/China. One thing the game does not take into consideration enough with Japan is their logistics were a mess and not really able to go to much into the mountains. Not too mention that aircraft carrier can decimate the Chinese early on. Perhaps a trade off of sort would be less carriers available in the early stage with perhaps an extra bomber to compensate. Something just to mention is Japan can be devastating to the Allied cause if played right, but can not really win the war on its own. Al fyi I did not and have never used saved games. However I will admit to 2 tries before sending to you to open up. 1st/2nd try both took Poland and my odds of doing it are above 50% when going for it 1st turn. Reason I restarted was I messed up the Japan opening the 1st time being my 1st go at the 1st turn enclosure. Reality as Amona states it is not 100% needed to take Poland 1st turn if the axis use their units better on turn I also believe their is the right combination to take Poland in 2 turns and start Low Countries on turn 3 before wheeling all troops around to help with France
  14. Stated same thing early on in this post that more time is needed for some allied players to start their main assaults especially against good axis players. Perhaps the end of the game is not needed as I stated but more time than 105 turns.
  15. My understanding was that soviet light tanks were not supposed to be produced and/or reproduced? However with latest patches in Barbarossa to Berlin the Soviets are allowed to produce these.
  16. First question I have is why must this tournament be time constrained. To me this seems like some pre-set time line that does not really matter. 2nd is if you talk about 44 compared to 45 or 47 is a different time line. I play for the long haul and might be hit by this short-term approach but am ok with it if this is what it is and will play just for this victory condition that must be met. 3rd why does everyone always think the Jap's are not a force. In terms of territory they can and are a lot the biggest beast on the planet if played right. You can have just as many land units as the Germans but not as many against you. Up for whatever but feel games should be played out or to a point where not redeemable.
  17. No problems here. Still waiting on axis turn from one of my opponents llhnickerson. Hopefully soon.
  18. Ok the tourney is here, let the games begin:) A little confused are we suppose to play mirror games against each opponent or in the early rounds one allied, one axis game only mixing up with opponents?
  19. Well unfortunately I accidentally deleted the file:) Thanks for quick reply though
  20. Hello, Perhaps I did not do it right when I saved the latest patch for this game and tried to keep the old version in a different folder. I am able to continue playing an older version saved game I have and saved my turn. But when I try to email this to my opponent I can not find it even though it is on my system. Any advise?
  21. No mod. One choice I make is for the 4 garrison instead of the Indochina Army then put these 4 units in garrison mode to free up 4 other units. I count around 100 units Japan can have, I also buy more of the special forces before the free ones are put on the map to over max out. This does not include 3 Thai units I get as I do invade but let them join once Burma is over run. What I normally do not do is put more units in Manchuko than is needed to garrison and let the Germans fight it out. Now if the soviets abandon Siberia then I will march a small army thru there. 100 units is more than enough considering this is more than the Soviets/US have in any game I have seen and is actually not accurate as they had the largest armed forces during the war. Brits can not readily defend all of India/Australia meaning overwhelming Japan forces are not needed but just enough to do the job, and China the same as there is only so many ways thru the mountain pass and once thru China is done and forces are freed up for other tasks or supporting other fronts.
  22. I see things different with Japan. Each and every game I have played PBEM so far Japan is a beast. They can easily have around 100 land units in 42' which is far above anyone rather than maybe Germany and a little absurd. Perhaps I have not played the right opponent but find them quite able to do all required with India, Australia, and fight the US, in fact most islands are taken right away and india/Australia threatened and under assault in the summer of 42. Yes you could say the Japanese had plenty of men but did they have the supplies for such a large sphere and the answer is strongly no. Most of their men were starving, living of the land, with little support once dropped off in each area. They barely had enough transports to feed their people let alone the men across the globe. You do not need to defend most of your possessions as the US has no way to bring a real assault until 43'.
  23. I will throw my name in the hat if players still needed
  24. Thanks Al. Internet is still kind of pain over here at times for things depending on the site. For a couple years could not even get on the forum, now it works somewhat.
