  1. Wow! I had no idea so much went into getting the terrain right. Thank you for your hard work Capt! So to summarize, the problem regarding CMBS is this: 1. The game and existing action pack were developed and released before the start of the Ukraine war. Both are still available for purchase. 2. A DLC expansion of some sort has been under development during the period the war started and is near completion. 3. Selling the existing material is not a concern, but developing new material is. 4. Further development on the title has now been shelved because of the ongoing war. 5. Redeveloping the game is not a simple task even using the existing maps and models. I guess the solution is clear: Battlefront needs to convince the Russians and Ukrainians to stop fighting so we can get our game back. However, if that fails, I guess CMBS is developmentally dead. I understand the passion of several of these posts. I disagree on some points, but I can concede that I wouldn't play a game depicting the invasion of my homeland if it was under attack. I just hope something can be salvaged of the work that has been done. Hey, here is another proposal for you: Combat Mission Red Dawn (2024)! Please don't take inspiration from the dumb remake! If the modern titles are on hold (anything post 2017) I propose the following games to scratch the modern itch: Combat Mission Desert Storm, Combat Mission Iraq War, and Combat Mission Kabul (since Combat Mission Afghanistan is already taken). and, just for fun, Combat Mission Pacific Theater of Operations. As I said. I am not a game developer, and i know nothing of Battlefront's market research so throwing out ideas is easy. I have played combat mission for a long time and I want Battlefront to succeed. Frankly, I was also one of those people who believed the company was made up of passionate volunteers with some part time coders to develop the game. Thank you all for your hard work and letting me run my virtual mouth in your forums!
  2. Capt, I liked your comments about how difficult it would be to design a Polish theater of operations. I am not a game developer so this is what I would imagine: find a country that has similar terrain and Army as Ukraine (Moldovia? Belarus? Romania?). If the terrain is close enough to be convincing, then how much rework would be needed? Here is a wild suggestion. Since I have no background in designing video games, its easy to have ideas Change the name to Combat Mission Dnieper. Keep the year 2017 and the setting becomes the NATO defense of Belarus after it decides to align more closely with NATO, resulting in a Russian invasion. Without doing more detailed research, it looks like they use a lot of the same equipment Ukraine is using. Hopefully it wouldn't be too hard to update uniforms and vehicles to their military. I am also not certain how close the terrain matches or how many new maps would need to be created to make a convincing campaign. Honestly, I never really thought the maps in CMBS actually represented real places. I always thought they were inspired by the general terrain of the area, but nowhere specific. I am trying to get an appreciation for the factors that Battlefront puts into their decision making. While I doubt cancelling the DLC was easy, I just hope there is a way to salvage the situation without losing the effort that has already been started.
  3. Ash, thank you! That is what I have advocating for in several of my posts! Just change the setting. But here is a question for the people discussing the morality of further developing CMBS (and I will front load this by saying it has obviously been settled at Battlefront): if continued development of CMBS is morally wrong because of the on going war, isn't the continued sale of the game just as morally wrong? As stated by Capt, it is depicting fighting in areas that are active combat zones. Shouldn't the game been pulled day one of the war?
  4. I get the difference, but I can also separate fantasy from reality. Playing Call of Duty doesn't make you a violent person. Playing CM doesn't mean you support the war in Ukraine or condone how the war is being fought. Steppwulf, I'm not trying to needle you and I apologize if I have been too argumentative or have not been as precise as I intend. My ultimate point this: Battlefront developed a game before the world events changed. As far as I am concerned, they have nothing to apologize for or be ashamed. If they want to slow or stop development of CMBS as a means of being sensitive to current events, I can respect that. But I am also a customer and I want more of this particular product. They have already invested time, finances, and resources into development. Why thow out the baby with the bath water? Is it possible to change the setting and create a win-win situation?
  5. Steppenwulf, yes "No Russian" does not depict and actual terrorist attack, but it does put the player in the shoes of someone conducting a terrorist attack. So, in a way, it is no different than an actual terrorist attack or mass shooting. Take a look at the new Flight Simulator from Microsoft. One of the complaints that has cropped up is that people are flying planes into buildings 9/11 style. It hasn't stopped the development of the game or halted sales. But I digress and I don't want to get my own thread too badly off topic. Vacillator, you are correct. Battlefront has made up their minds and there is nothing I can do to change their decision. I really like the modern warfare titles and there are so few on the market that are strategy games, unless they are RTS or FPS and tend to more arcade like. Plus, the AAA game developers have decided that everything has to be a "cinematic experience" for the player. As I have gotten older, I have slowed down and don't enjoy RTS/FPS games as much as I did when I was younger. CM is the perfect balance of pacing and realism. I just hope that Battlefront can keep the modern warfare genre alive without having to sacrifice their products simply because world events have changed. Thanks, everyone!
  6. To clarify I mean "dead" as in, no longer being developed. I have no idea how well it has sold in relation to the other titles. MikeyD, you are correct and I agree with you. If the setting is the problem, then change the setting. To me it seems like a simple solution, but I don't design video games. Other than the fact that the game is advertised as a hypothetical conflict between NATO and Russia set in Ukraine there is nothing that relates to Ukraine other than the briefings. Just change the text to another country and the problem is solved. In terms of new DLC being a PR disaster, I disagree. Look at the "No Russian" mission in Call of Duty. It made international headlines as being extremely offensive, and censored in many nations. However, that didn't stop the game from becoming a blockbuster. I apologize to Battlefront, but I don't see new DLC in CMBS rising to that level of media interest.
  7. Lets face it, CMSF was the Iraq War. Yes it was set in a hypothetical invasion of Syria, and the campaigns/scenarios did not represent the actual battles taking place. However, the reality is that the OOB, unconventional forces, etc. were all taken from the realities being experienced in Iraq. Basically, it was the Iraq War but not in Iraq. If there is sensitivity about Ukraine, why do the same thing? Just change the setting to Poland, the Baltics, or whatever eastern part of Europe you want? You end up with the same result with a fictional Russian invasion of (fill in the blank). This way we get to keep our modern forces and grow the core game.
  8. I think we are missing the point of wargaming. What would happen if Battlefront modeled the Israeli army in a fictional battle against Syria? Does that now make the game a referendum on Israel? Does it imply a stance by the game company? I say no. Playing Combat Mission is akin to playing a miniatures game in real life. You have your armies and you fight it out. It doesn't matter what happens in real life. We play video games because we want to play war without the dangers of war. Battling it out in a virtual Ukraine has nothing to do with what is happening in real life. Has anyone looked at Command Modern Operations? Some of the scenarios for that game are almost real time. I just don't see a connection for developing a game and support for Ukraine or Russia.
  9. I have been a player of the CM series since the Beyond Overload days and have bought just about every title since. I have enjoyed the modern games and I am very disappointed to hear the the expansion for BS has been shelved. Why? As I understand it, Battlefront did not want people thinking they were making a profit off of a war even though the game was designed before the war in Ukraine. I understand this point, but I don't remember any complaints about the release of Shock Force when there was an active war in Iraq and Afghanistan. The game wasn't pulled when a real war in Syria happened. What makes the Ukraine situation so special? Is the issue simply that the setting is in Ukraine? Could BS and the expansion simply be retitled Combat Mission Europe or something with a new setting but using the exact same maps and equipment?
  10. The patch worked! Scratch one T-90 and one BMP!
  11. Both targets were stationary, but the BMP did have some tree cover. Basically, the missiles failed to perform their top attacks and just sailed on by every time. I also noticed this with the previous mission. My starting javelin teams missed 3 out of their 4 shots. In neither scenario were the missiles intercepted by trees, APS, or ERA that I could see. I have saved and reloaded the file number times and changed the file name. I started to notice it more after that.
  12. I have been playing the Vanguard mission of the TF 3-69 campaign and have fired 5 javelins with no hits. 3 were fired at a BMP at a range of 2000m and 2 were at a T-90, range 2100m. I could understand a single miss, but five!? That seems a bit excessive for the javelin, but maybe the miss rate is higher than I believe?
  13. I have been playing the British Forces campaign and have noticed that my Javelins are no longer performing their top down attacks. I know there is a certain amount of randomness for misfires, but this seems like a bug. During my current mission (Aadra Adveristy) I fired 4 British and 1 American Javelin at one tank and all 5 flew off the map. This also occurred toward the end of my previous mission when I fired 4 Javelins at one tank and all 4 flew off the map. Has anyone else noticed this happening?
  14. I posted this in the Cold War forum, but I will put it here too. The game will not override the save file when using the same file name. No matter how many times I try to save with the same file name, it will not override the save. I have to save the scenario with a different file name each time.
  15. I started playing the American campaign yesterday, but found that the game would not override the save file if I used the same file name. I accidently started with a real-time game, but then switched to turn based. I played the first mission for about 15 minutes and kept saving with the same file name, but when I reloaded the game, it was back to turn one of my real-time game.
  16. There is nothing simple about reinstalling these games. I installed the big update to SF2, but the game won't launch. Will it work if I go back an install the engine 3 or do I need to uninstall the big update then reinstall it? As much as I love the Combat Mission series, I have always hated Battlefront's system for moving the games from computer to computer. Moving games on Steam is easy, Matrix games is easy, but I need to know the proper order to download and install my games with Battlefront. ugh! I really wish my order page at least said which game was which instead of order#, order type, status and price. I have to keep hunting around clicking on each link.
  17. I got a new computer and need to reinstall the game. How do I do that? Last time I need to be given access to all the game files from the repository to reinstall. Can I just go through an redownload from my order history? If I do that, do I need to download everything all over again in order or can I just do the latest update?
  18. I have considered taking the big town first, but haven't figured out a good way to do it. The map seems to lend itself to going after the top left town first since it has good overwatch positions. I once tired to use the ford near the starting position to attack the big town, but it ended badly. In the end, I have always fought the map the same way, but have never had much success in finishing the fight. Usually by the time I have taken the first two towns, my force is too depleted to effectively take the big town.
  19. Good to know. I have been having trouble with this scenario. I have been watching Usually Hapless's videos anything to use his advice to improve my gameplay. But I'm stuck on the small town in the top right, hand order of the map. I haven't found a good way to use overwatch and fire support to get my guys in town without taking a lot a casualties. To make it worse, the Russian artillery keeps moving with my group, making it difficult to have a rally point. I need help!
  20. Hmmm. Does that make the drones useless? If I spend the time AA hunting with the drones and they get shot down before my strike arrives, what is the point of having them? There are two Tunguskas in this battle and both are far enough back that the game will be over by the time they are found and eliminated by my ground troops. To be clear, I'm not trying to argue. But if the drones are to help the commander understand whats ahead, do they serve any purpose if they can so easily be killed?
  21. I posted on this once before, but it was a long time ago. What is the best way to keep drones alive? I know the easy answer is to kill the AA fire, but what can you do to minimize their exposure to AA? I loaded up Cry Havoc! and each time I launched the Raven during setup, it was generally shot down less than five minutes into the game. I usually put it over objective Honeybadger in hopes that it wasn't directly over an AA gun. Sadly, sometimes, it didn't even spot anything before it was shot down. When I got a Shadow drone, I waited the 6 minutes for to arrive over objective Honeybadger. It promptly spotted a T-90 and I called in precision fire on the tank. When I hit play, the drone was again shot down before the fire mission request was even broadcast. Am I doing something wrong? Is there something more I can do? Is this just bad luck on my part? I have played this mission several times, but I have never been able to keep a drone alive longer than a few minutes. Hitting cease fire to find the locations of the AA guns feels like a cheat and I don't want to be in the habit of doing it. Does anyone have a suggestion?
  22. Also, some of my US troops don't have uniforms in certain scenarios. They have the web belt, boots, and helmet, but their uniform is all black.
  23. I loaded up my CM:FI and discovered that I don't have any exterior grayhound models. I can give commands and the "vehicle" responds appropriately, but I have three guys floating around in the air driving around their invisible AFV. Is there a fix for this?
  24. I just got a second computer monitor for Christmas! But I have not run two monitors on a home system before. Can CM display across two monitors? If so, how do I set it up?
