In that second vid, what is that last munition that lands square on the group of guys? It looks tossed/thrown?

At first I thought it was thrown too because it arcs and seems to originate from a guy who is in the right of frame (under the watermark), but if you watch it full screen you can clearly see it is a drone that comes in from the far right of the screen. And Carolus' post above shows the drone's view.

Hmm perhaps they provide some limited cover, but they still have holes and unprotected spaces. Not to mention pellets could penetrate tire. Even some wood cover would be better, and less nightmarish to remove when in need. I suppose some issues of satellite reconaissance or missile guidance were perhaps at play here.

This is strategic bomber squadron, top nuke-wielding asset in the arsenal of global superpower...and they cover it with used tires. I mean, c'mon ;)... Imagine USAF suddenly covering their B-2's and B-52's with monster truck tires.

Still, it is better than nothing, just how much better we don't know. But it clearly does show that Russia was in no way prepared, or perhaps never even expected, that Ukraine would bring the war to their territory.

I wonder how prepared for this they are, assuming it isn't just psyops:

The Ukrainian military will soon be able to strike targets located as far as 1,500 km into Russian territory, National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) secretary, Oleksiy Danilov, said on Ukrainian Radio.

Copetires... Tirecoping... Vulcopium? Anyway, what an occassion for Trent Telenko to go back in style.

As an ad hoc measure it might not be so bad. I linked to this video earlier ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHy-Rv2Lpvg&t=64s ) showing that the Ukrainians are using air burst drones to attack planes, so the tyres could well stop some of the pellets and reduce damage and risk of catastrophic effects on fuel tanks. Obviously it's not 100% protection of even the vital parts but could reduce risk until something better is developed. It must be a real pain though to take off and put back on again after every mission.

Testing some sort new RWS, appears to be a fifty cal or maybe a lower velocity 30mm gun with a sniper function. Firing single rounds and adjusting optics. More likely in U.S. or Australia than Ukraine, at least this week.

Found the website, it is mostly an anti-drone system. Although it looks like it could make anything less than a heavy IFV unhappy if the need arose. System coming to Ukraine very soon it seems.

"Humeniuk noted growing anxiety among Russian naval forces regarding Ukraine's "Sea Baby" surface drones. Russian military vessels are reportedly trying to hide behind the areas used by civilian ships, which were intentionally delineated to create an artificial buffer zone."

Maybe a bit late to ask, but why do you bold some parts of location names, like the 'o' & 'i' in Novopetrykivka? Thanks.

I have always assumed it is to show where the stress is in the name to aid with pronunciation. In Russian, and I assume Ukrainian, unstressed vowels often change their sound; for example, Novo would sound more like Nova when spoken.

Crimean bridge now. It’s not entirely clear if it is the explosions or another smoke screen exercise which take place there from time to time.

/2. The movement of vehicles on the Crimean bridge is temporarily blocked. - Russian sources.
It was also reported about the activity of Russian air defense in Kerch

/3. The Russian-appointed Crimean authorities claim that two missiles were shot down by air defense forces in the area of the Kerch Strait. According to them, the Crimean Bridge is not damaged.

  9. Half of Russia’s Elite Paratroopers Killed or Wounded in Ukraine – British MoD - https://www.kyivpost.com/post/20254

"Addressing his troops on the Day of Airborne Forces earlier this month, General Colonel Mikhail Teplinsky said that over the last 17 months “more than 5,000 wounded paratroopers returned to the front after treatment, and over 3,500 of our wounded refused to leave the front line at all."

"However, extrapolating Teplinksy’s figures endorses the assessment that at least 50 per cent of the 30,000 paratroopers who deployed to Ukraine in 2022 have been killed or wounded."

While we're waiting for news of Ukainian advances, I've been thinking a bit about the drone attacks on Moscow.

There have been several, but with very few civilian casualties. Russia tries to spin this as the result of good air defence, but I'm getting the impression that these attacks are in fact intended to be largely symbolical.

They are intended to make people in Russia afraid (and realise that they are engaged in a war that also has consequences for them), but at the same time actively avoiding mass casualties, because those would be bad for Western goodwill.

Imagine the propaganda win for Russia if one of those Ukrainian drones hit a school or similar. Even though the Russians are of course doing the exact same thing on a much bigge scale against Ukraine.

Vlad Vexler has a recent take on this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNmL4vhBAGA

His main points are that the drone strikes:

-provide a meaningful boost to Ukrainian morale by showing that Russia is at least getting a taste of their own medicine

-interfere with the Kremlin narrative that the war is not getting out of control

-make it harder for Putin to maintain a drawn out or frozen war, i.e. if Russia manages to freeze the war, Ukraine can intensify their strikes on Russia instead

  11. An interesting and in-depth interview with a Ukrainian sniper on the equipment, roles and tactics of snipers in the war - https://euromaidanpress.com/2023/07/25/stopping-the-modern-hitler-snipers-hold-the-line-in-ukraines-battle-for-survival/

Judging from the casualties rates from our side and the Russian side, and according to the information from the medics, when it is relatively calm on the front lines:

    • 88% of casualties are from artillery.
    • 10% are from snipers.
    • 2% are from ordinary gunfire.

When the offensive starts either from the Ukrainian side or Russian sides, then the proportions are different, but in general, snipers are always in second place.

  12. A cinematic portrait of some of the members of the 11th Special Brigade of the Army Aviation "Kherson" (they flew to Azovstal and Snake Island). It's light on military info but if nothing else is another demonstration of Ukraine's mastery of the info-space.

    Quote

The first episode of «CHERUBS» features the heroes of the 11th Special Brigade of the Army Aviation «Kherson». They were defending Kyiv, fought fierce battles in Irpin, carried out missions at Azovstal, and participated in the operation to liberate Snake Island. In February 2022, russia had many more modern combat aircraft, while Ukrainian pilots were doing the impossible in the sky with forty-year-old planes. The 11th Separate Brigade defended the southern direction, with only 5 helicopters and 3 planes, halting enemy columns. It was only thanks to the efforts of Ukraine's defenders that they managed to protect our sky and push the enemy aviation out of our country's airspace.

  13. A video that goes into a little detail on the tactics used for an assault on a Russian trench system. In this case, rather than riding in on armoured vehicles, the Ukrainians dug a purpose-built and concealed position to attack from, surprising the Russians, who were reportedly well equipped. It also seems like the assaulting troops are receiving orders/directions based on what the drone can see.

  14. Oryx website will continue but Twitter account will not

Just to clear up any confusion, the Russian and Ukrainian losses lists will continue to be updated after I end Oryx on October 1st. Jakub & the rest of the team will continue their 'work' as usual. The website will remain up, but this Twitter account will go silent.
