  1. For me, version 1.04 is running fine in plain vanilla Windows 10 - no need to set any kind of compatibility mode. Only requirement, upon scenario start, is to alt-tab to desktop then back to CMAK to improve frame rate. Only needs done once, and game runs smooth as silk. I recently purchased the 1.04 version from the Battlefront store. Tried to get my old, retail, European CDV versions running on Windows 10 - no luck with that. Hope the above helps.
  2. Thanks for the feedback both of you - much appreciated. Have read some good reviews of Windows 10, so willing to take the plunge in the next few days. Your input has made it a whole lot easier. Good to know that Windows 10 has some nice reviews, but a PC that is not running Combat Mission is not a real PC : ))
  3. I have all the Combat Mission titles (well, except Black Sea - not got round to that one yet). All the titles currently installed on a Windows 8.1 computer. Seems I am heading down the road of upgrading to Windows 10. What will that mean for the various licenses I have for CMSF, CMBN, CMAF and CMRT?? All of them are fully up to date with latest versions, and all loaded with every available module. Should I be taking some action before upgrading to Windows 10?
  4. Sorry to sound like a boring old fart on this topic, but Customs Duty has to do with a tax applied to goods which a government wants to prevent competing with domestic production - it does not apply to (relatively) low value items like CD's and DVD's. Import Tax is levied at the same rate as VAT (20% in the UK). If Import Tax was not levied, then imports from outside the EU would have a (20%) advantage over goods produced inside the EU. Of course, the 8 pounds admin fee is steep, but I fear the rest is perfectly legit.
  5. I think John Malcolm gives a correct summary of the issue. Only remark from my side - for HM Revenue & Customs purposes, Battlefront are obliged to provide a copy of the original sales receipt. They should not "doctor" the invoice by removing the download element, as the sale to the client was an integral hard copy and download product. HMRC are entitled to charge import tax/VAT on the entire transaction. The charging of import tax is not limited to the UK - it applies throughout the EU. Seems the UK has been especially "vigilent" on this. I live in The NEtherlands, and did not have to pay. I suspect the UK "vigilence" is the product of two reasons: 1. I think the UK is probably Battlefront's third largest market after the US and Canada. I suspect there was a lot of shipemnts arrive at the Royal Mail office of exchange on the same day(s). 2. The steelbox probably attracted increased attention. If the cd had shipped in a normal plastic case, probably HMRC and the Royal Mail would have turned a blind eye. But, we all ordered the steel box precisely because it was NOT a regular plastic case, right??!! I just checked my pre-order invoice. Battlefront have applied no VAT or GST. So, we all got the pre-order without VAT. Some people then got charged upon receipt of goods, and some got lucky. Battlefront have acted absolutely correctly. If they had shipped from Germany, all customers would have been charged VAT. This way, some customers skipped it : ) Some got found out : (
  6. Just to help the understanding: import tax and VAT are the same thing. Both levied @ 20% in the UK. The logic goes: goods sold within the EU are subject to VAT. Goods exported from the EU are exempt from VAT (but subject to tax/duty by the receiving country). Goods imported to the EU are subject to zero tax by the country of export - which would give them a 20% price advantage over EU origin goods if they were not subjected to import tax/VAT upon arrival in the EU. The import tax/VAT can be charged over the retail value of the goods plus the shipping charges. It it collected by the Post Office on behalf of the government. The Post Office will always levy a handling charge - the logic goes that contacting the recipient upfront to pay the tax immediately and avoid the post office having to pre-pay is just too time consuming and costly. Also, the adressee on the package may not be the ultimate payer of the import tax/VAT.
  7. I think the answer lies in your monitor's onscreen menu. On my Samsung 24" monitor I can select the image size as being either Auto or Widescreen. Try starting the game with the first display resolution CMBB offers you once you have deleted the prefs file. Then, with the game running, try cycling through the monitor's own menu options. Hoping this also explains why, having had the game on your HDD all the time, you now notice a change. Good luck!
  8. I have an NVIDIA card, and have been suffering from the night battle flashing issue. Have installed the new patch, and can confirm it fixes the problem. Job done. Cheers Battlefront - highly appreciated that you fixed that.
  9. I think you are correct in your understanding of the pure numbers. Mathematically, Strategic Bombing makes little sense in the game. I think that has some real world analogy. British bomber command suffered an enormous casualtly rate (close to 50%, compared to around 3% for other services), and failed to stop the year-on-year production increases of the Germans. On the other hand, it's not all about pure maths. Strategic bombing allowed the western allies to inflict pain on Germany whilst only engaging in the field in a limited way (compared to the Russians on the Eastern front). Basically strategic bombing in the game allows the western allies to undertake an additional (albeit expensive) lend-lease transfer to the Russians. The west can burn MPP's building bombers, and inflict pain on Germany, which might just be enough to prevent Germany builing that additional army they desperately need out east.
  10. One advantage of the new 258.96 drivers is that the disappearing men linked to turning shadows on/off is solved again.
  11. Well, additional memory installed and tested. My video card is a 9600GT NVIDIA model with 512MB of memory, so I was effectively installing an additional 1.5GB of system RAM. The PC has some noticable performance improvements. Mainstream games also chug along noticeably faster. But, for CMSF no real improvement. Load times seem to be marginally improved. No real increase in frame rate during the game : ( Looks like the next investment in the search for CMSF perfection will be a Pentium i5 : )
  12. By co-incidence I ordered an extra 2GB of RAM for my machine a couple of days ago. It's a dual core 2.66 MHz system running XP 32 bit. Will let you know if the additional 2 GB of RAM makes a noticable difference. To be honest, I'm hopeful. Doubt it will be anything amazing (no doubling of speed), but RAM is pretty cheap these days, and am hoping that 4 GB (well, we all know not all of it is usable under XP 32 bit) will give me a bit more ooomph... Will let you know.
  13. In my experience, it's buildings that are a real frame rate eater. Battles with large numbers of buildings run slower. But, there are plenty of scenarios with more open terrain where the issue does not arise. And, on the postive side, playing with low double digit frame rates (I get 12 on building heavy scenarios) is not a problem, so long as you can avoid the "stutter" of the graphics when navigating around the map. Frame rates are not the be-all and end-all of CMSF. It's not a FPS : )
  14. Tried the new NVIDIA drivers (257.21) and we are back to the disappearing soldiers/terrain when shadows are turned on. Not a deal breaker, but annoying. Seem to remember this was an issue with the drivers and OpenGL support, but maybe my memory fails me, and there was some tweak to solve it in the NVIDIA control panel. Shame, cos I seemed to have got a little (but noticable) performance improvement with the new driver. On the other hand, perhaps that's cos no shadows are rendered...!!
