  1. Very poignant, Deadmarsh.

I also agree that the sexual revolution was /is a disaster, particularly for men. Though having dipped my toe into the swamp, I consider myself a rank hypocrite.

My summary on free- or, if you will, promiscuous- sex:

1- The more numerous one's sexual experiences the faster ennui sets in, and the greater turnover of partners. (See gays)

2- As far as marriage is concerned, the fewer prior experiences the better. This applies to men and women.

3- Since women crave sex less, they decide when intimacy takes place. They're in the driver's seat.

4- So status considerations loom larger with them.

5- This phenomenon marginalises average men.

6- Ready availability of porn, i.e., the internet, has proved a negative.

7- The best and most enduring sex is based on mutual innocence, if not ignorance.

8- We've been deceived by propaganda on the subject of sex since the 60s.

    Childress,

Am so disappointed! My quick scan saw it as reading "hypergamey," but then I noticed the "E" was missing necessary to describe someone of extremely dubious wargaming ethics.

Hehe. That's why this post garnered 140+ views instead of 12.

  3. Selected cynical quotes:

”If an injury has to be done to a man it should be so severe that his vengeance need not be feared.

“The first method for estimating the intelligence of a ruler is to look at the men he has around him.”

“it is much safer to be feared than loved because ...love is preserved by the link of obligation which, owing to the baseness of men, is broken at every opportunity for their advantage; but fear preserves you by a dread of punishment which never fails.”

“Never attempt to win by force what can be won by deception.”

“…he who seeks to deceive will always find someone who will allow himself to be deceived.”

“Since love and fear can hardly exist together if we must choose between them, it is far safer to be feared than loved”

“Of mankind, we may say in general they are fickle, hypocritical, and greedy of gain.”

“The promise given was a necessity of the past: the word broken is a necessity of the present.”

“Therefore, it is necessary to be a fox to discover the snares and a lion to terrify the wolves”

“He who builds on the people, builds on the mud”

  4. 'Machiavelli survived and died in his bed.'

The Great Cynic held several ministerial positions in the Florentine city-state. His journey to the grave was interrupted by several weeks of torture at the hands of the Medici who, after a spell in the political wilderness, returned to power with a vengeance. They tied the future philosopher's hands behind his back and hung him from the ceiling causing dislocation of the shoulder. Unpleasant to be sure and the politics are too Byzantine to describe here. If only some of our pols had expiated their sins in a similar fashion.

One of Machiavelli's key policies while in power consisted in replacing the mercenary army of Florence with citizen-soldiers. As documented in his theoretical works, he found that the former's unpatriotic and uninvested nature made their allegiance fickle and often too unreliable when most needed. No diversity for him.

Machiavelli discussed history in purely human terms- including many striking examples from Ancient Rome- and he was never personally ruthless or devious. He praises Cesare Borgia in The Prince. But the former learned his realpolitik tactics from the latter, not vice-a-versa. The name of Machiavelli incurred obloquy for centuries. Mussolini was one of the few political leaders to praise him publicly.

Nefertiti, meaning "the beautiful one has cometh forth',  is one of the most famous women of the ancient world, and a mesmerising icon of feminine beauty. She was the Great Royal Wife of the Pharaoh Akhenaten. Her painted stucco-coated limestone bust, crafted in 1345BC,  was discovered by a German archaeological team in 1912 and put on display in the Neues Museum in Berlin.

During the Nazi era, Goering proposed returning the bust to King Fouad in exchange for a political alliance between the two countries. Hitler would have none of it, writing the king 'I know this famous bust. I have viewed it and marvelled at it many times. Nefertiti continually delights me. It is a unique masterpiece, an ornament, a true treasure'. He further added that whatever Germany already has, is hers to keep.To his inner circle, the fuehrer asserted that Nefertiti had a focal place in his dreams of rebuilding Berlin as Germania. "Do you know what I'm going to do one day? I'm going to build a new Egyptian museum in Berlin," he went on. "I dream of it. Inside I will build a chamber, crowned by a large dome. In the middle, this wonder, Nefertiti, will be enthroned. I will never relinquish the head of the Queen."

Hitler had fallen for Nefertiti and refused to let go of her. Some in his retinue speculated that he spent hours gazing at the queen. When things got dicey in 1945 he had her interred in an underground salt mine later to be discovered by American GIs. The US returned the bust in 1956.

  6. Do you believe that, with the modern sexual free-for-all, no fault divorce, women's rights, etc, males have ceded power to females? I tend to think so. The latter secures discretionary powers.

Does connubial bliss depend on mutual confusion, a basic misunderstanding? Or is it all just a joke?

Samuel Johnson to Boswell on sex: 'Sir, the expense is damnable, the position is ridiculous, and the pleasure fleeting.'

And on the fatuity of finding the 'right woman':

Boswell: "Pray, Sir, do you not suppose that there are fifty women in the world, with any one of whom a man may be as happy, as with any one woman in particular?"
    Johnson: "Ay, Sir, fifty thousand."

Has the sexual revolution has exposed the hypergamous nature of women?

In the pre-civilized state of humanity, red in tooth and claw, women determined which men got sexual access. Being calculating, they operate from a position of power- they crave it less. Men seek sexual release, women seek status and security. Thus marriage- as opposed to promiscuity-  represents an artificial state which in a civilised environment needs to fenced in by religious strictures, taboos and penalties. Is this stating the obvious? Have we returned to the Garden of Eden or ... something else?

Faithful matrimony, however desirable, runs contrary to our genetic code. And despite the modern ethos enduring sexual unions appear to require innocence on both sides. The less knowledge and experience and the fewer partners, the better. And inexperience on both sides benefits the male of the species.

    Debate.

During the Cuban Missile crisis in 1962, flotilla commander Vasili Arkhipov and the second-in-command of the nuclear-missile submarine B-59 resisted pressure to launch.

Wiki: Unlike the other subs in the flotilla, three officers on board the B-59 had to agree unanimously to authorise a nuclear launch: Captain Savitsky, the political officer Ivan Semonovich Maslennikov, and the second-in-command Arkhipov. Typically, Russian submarines armed with the "Special Weapon" only required the captain to get authorization from the political officer to launch a nuclear torpedo. However, due to Arkhipov's position as flotilla commander, the B-59's captain also was required to gain Arkhipov's approval. An argument broke out, with only Arkhipov against the launch.

Immediately upon return to Russia, many crew members were faced with disgrace from their superiors. One Admiral told them “‘It would have been better if you’d gone down with your ship.” Olga, Arkhipov's wife, said "he didn't like talking about it, he felt they hadn't appreciated what they had gone through."  He died in 1998 from the effects of radiation exposure incurred during the so-called K-19 accident just prior to the Cuban missile crisis.

    • The great Napoleon Bonaparte could have won the Battle of Waterloo by attacking earlier in the day, but Napoleon Bonaparte delayed his attack because he suffered greatly from hemorrhoid pain that morning.
    • Napoleon was Roman Catholic, but did not believe in the existence of a living God.

John, these two assertions from your Gecko&Fly site are false.

1- Napoleon delayed his attack on Wellington's position was due to the weather, not his hemorrhoids. It rained the night before rendering the morning ground soft and unsuitable for the French artillery.

2- Napoleon- who was all over the map on religion- was essentially a deist throughout most of his life. And he exhibited an enlightened tolerance toward different faiths as Emperor, including Islam. However, he would not admit that there had ever existed a genuine atheist and he died as a professed Roman Catholic, receiving the last rites. But Napoleon did utter some cynical remarks en route to the grave:

Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich.

    And:

All religions have been made by men.

    And:

It is by making myself Catholic that I brought peace to Brittany and Vendée. It is by making myself Italian that I won minds in Italy. It is by making myself a Moslem that I established myself in Egypt. If I governed a nation of Jews, I should reestablish the Temple of Solomon.

  9. NFL postseason is here. Who do you like?

Calm down, TB. It's just a game.

    NESN:

' FOXBORO, Mass. — Martellus Bennett was ready for everything that came before a touchdown pass from Tom Brady, but he had no idea what he was in for after his first scoring play with the New England Patriots quarterback. Brady is known for his brutal headbutts after touchdowns. The Wall Street Journal covered it well in a 2014 feature, and Willie McGinest, Brady’s former teammate-turned-NFL Media analyst, said it started way back in 2001 when the quarterback became a starter and would headbutt the Patriots’ linemen before games. Brady even chipped a tooth headbutting wide receiver Brandon LaFell in Super Bowl XLIX. “I was not prepared for that! I was like oh (expletive),” Bennett told NESN.com on Thursday. “I told him, I was like, ‘Bro, you might need to stop on that one.’ I did not expect that. When he hit me twice, ooh goddamn! He was like, ‘Yeah!’ Boom. ‘Yeah!’ Boom. ‘All right, all right.’ He caught me off guard.” '

  10. Mugabe is indeed an evil dude but Steffani Whitmyer from the Warrior site neglects to include him in her Top 10 Evil Dictator list. Presumably, the nonagenarian lacked the Flair Factor. Seems like Idi Amin, a favorite, needed to make the cut.

    #7. Vlad the Impaler

    1320864.jpg

The inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula is just as scary as the blood-drinking monster. Vlad had a particular taste for blood and torture – and his name offers a clue . To impale his victims, he would insert a wood or metal pole through the body. Usually, it was inserted vertically so that the exit wound would be near the victim's neck, shoulders, or mouth. In most instances, the pole was not sharp to prolong suffering and, in most cases, it would take hours or even days for the person to die. The pole would be raised vertically to showcase the victim. But impaling his victims wasn't the only form of killing he enjoyed. He also drove nails through his victims'  heads, as well as burning, beheading, roasting children alive and then feeding them to their mothers, mutilation, and countless other atrocities. It's rumored that he would dip his bread in blood before eating it and often enjoyed eating feasts with his impaled victims around him (usually still alive and writhing). It's estimated that he killed anywhere between 40,000 to 100,000 people. Although a relatively small number compared to other evil dictators on this list, Vlad the Impaler earns a spot in the top ten simply for his sadistic pleasure of torturing and killing people.

'Coulda, woulda, shoulda' the most depressing words in a man's life. But in that case, you probably did the right thing. Once a girl's brain is filled to bursting with some kind ideology- religious or political- there's no hope. It's helpful to remember that the proselytizing urge breaks down to self-persuasion and the religion or political ideology on offer must be contrary to common sense. For example, the greater the evidence of the failure of Communism (a secular religion) as an economic system the more fanatical their adherents became. Logical faiths don't propagate.
