  1. I tried uninstalling all drivers I could and then re-installed 190.38 Beta. Also changed Texture Filtering to High Quality. Still locks up. But thanks for the advice and I feel we're getting closer to a global solution for all - maybe just 1 or 2 drivers away ...
  2. I still get the screen locking problem when I set AF to 16x and AA to either 16x or 16xQ. Did you change anything else ?
  3. Just installed Beta of 190.38. For me, both CMBB and CMAK are nominally fixed in that previous problems of cascading graphics (without 2x AA) and slowness (when using 2x AA to fix the cascading graphics) are both gone. However, I do get the display driver locking up sometimes as I scroll around the screen needing Alt-TAB and back again to fix it.
  4. @ sargemy What I find is that if my desktop is set at 1024x768 when I launch CMBB (after deleting preference file) then 1024x768 is the first choice that comes up then the lower resolutions but not higher ones. If I set desktop to 1600x1200 and then launch (after deleting file again) then it offers me that resolution first and then all lower resolutions. So try setting desktop to 1280x800 before launching and you should get that choice.
  5. Update and consolidation of my experiences with running CMx1 on Vista. As posted earlier, my system spec. is: Core2Duo 2.4 GHz, 2 GB RAM, Windows Vista 32 bit Graphics card is NVIDIA 8600 GTS I have recently updated to driver 163.75. Basic running: I have always found CMBO to run problem free and smoothly with all drivers with this system. For CMAK I got the cascading background problem with earlier drivers but since it was pointed out in this thread, I have been able to overcome it by overriding the application setting for antialiasing and setting it to 2x. For the last couple of drivers (and including this current one) I do not need to override the antialiasing mode and leave it application controlled. It still runs slower (see below). For CMBB, then even with this new driver I get the cascading background problem same as with earlier drivers and need to overcome it by overriding the application setting for antialiasing and setting it to 2x. It still runs slower (see below). Frame rates: In all cases below, frame rates are for turns when battle is raging and plenty of units are on the screen, always with some burning units and/or smoke amongst them. As a baseline I did a min/max/avg for a turn in a CMBO game on this system. The results were: 34, 78, 51.3. All the time it looked very smooth. For CMAK I did the same for 2 turns in different scenarios with the results: 6, 10, 7.6 and 5, 14, 7.5. For CMBB with 1 particular turn I got: 6, 7, 6.7 (but see below). Although slower than I’d like, I find these CMAK/CMBB rates playable and are considerably better than the 4 FPS that is the only other number I’ve seen posted. Information that may help in solving the issue: As well as the difference for latest drivers between CMAK and CMBB with getting the cascading background problem or not I have noticed something else when looking at frame rates. When I was between turns (in the orders phase), I noticed that the frame rate increased from 8-10 to about 20 when I switched from having a vehicle selected that was still functionning to having a vehicle selected that was abandonned or knocked out. To be clear, I had exactly the same view with many vehicles/units in each case, I just switched between which was selected for the bottom information panel. When none were selected the frame rate was also in the low range (10). Therefore it seems that the amount of information being shown in that bottom panel has a significant impact on frame rate (since there is clearly much less in there with an abandonned vehicle selected than at other times). This impact of the information panel seems much higher than any impact from the amount of units/smoke/firing going on in the actual battlefield display. I have no idea whether that feedback helps to solve the issue or even whether BFC are looking into it or leaving it to Vista/NVIDIA upgrades. But there it is anyway. The selection of abandonned vehicles also gives an opportunity to watch the action at higher frame rates when watching something particularly good (although the work round is not ideal). I tried out the same turn consecutively first selecting a functionning vehicle and then selecting an abandonned one. This was again with CMBB. So firstly, normal vehicle selected gave: 6, 16, 7.9 (much like the CMBB and CMAK turns previously benchmarked). Then, the same turn but selecting an abondonned vehicle throughout gave 13, 17, 15.0. An average frame rate almost twice as fast which was noticeable to the eye. As said, it isn’t ideal to select an abandonned vehicle when viewing a turn (I like to have selected something I’m watching the action of), however it is good to get up to that frame rate when watching vehicles on the move etc. Hope there's something useful in there for someone.
  6. I also now have CMAK and CMBB running ok with this fix. I'm sure we all have different views on acceptable speed but my experience with framerate / speed of running would seem to be different judging from the posts. For sure it runs noticeably slower than CMBO which runs fully smooth on my machine. However, I would still not describe it as running slow and for me is fully playable "with margin to spare". This while playing Ariete the Ram which has quite alot of forces involved. One thing I notice is that most of you seem to be on driver 163.44 while I'm still on 162.22. No idea if that could make a difference in speed. My system is Vista 32 bit (with update 938194 the only one I've added), Core2Duo 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM, NVIDIA 8600 GTS. I have no idea about optimising settings but in the performance section I set it to the "maximum performance / minimum concern for energy saving" setting. If anyone wants to know other settings I have that might be a reason why it runs fast enough on my machine let me know what and where I find it and I'll be happy to look and post.
  7. @ Brauer Duck Do you know which updates for Vista you installed ? I have only installed 938194 (which is 2.1 MB) and still get the same problem. I'm also using driver 162.22. @ MajorCyco I have the 8600GTS card and at least the CM:SF Demo works fine for me - but I don't have the full game so I can't vouch for that.
  8. I don't think I am running "software rendering" mode with CMBO since I am running at 1024 x 768 @ 75 hz. Is "software rendering" mode automatically switched on at 640 x 480 ? Anyhow, following up I have run at a variety of resolutions to see if it makes a difference. I ran CMBO at each of : 1600 x 1200 @ 60 hz 1024 x 768 @ 75 hz 640 x 480 @ 60 hz I ran either CMBB or CMAK at each of : 1600 x 1200 @ 60 hz 1280 x 1024 @ 60 hz 1024 x 768 @ 75 hz 800 x 600 @ 75 hz The results were the same : CMBO never had the problem at any resolution. CMBB and CMAK always had the problem at every resolution. In my original bug report to NVIDIA I only mentionned the game title so I will try your advice and re-post a bug report with a link to the demo page.
  9. I'm not sure if this helps (or even whether BF are looking into this) but as an experiment I put CMBO onto my VISTA machine and it doesn't have the same issue - the issue is only with CMBB and CMAK. Is there any chance that helps you at BF diagnose a work round until the drivers are fixed by NVIDIA ?
  10. @ KG_Cloghaun No, still no luck. Just today I've installed driver 162.22 from the NVIDIA site but it has the same problem. And I've had no reply from NVIDIA from my original bug report. Possibly they prioritise making fixes to support "current" games. Now, if BF were to release CMC thereby making CMBB a "current" game again maybe NVIDIA would punt this issue up the priority list ...
  11. I agree with David Chapuis to a point (although I - like many others - still play CMBO as well as CMBB & CMAK despite the older gameplay because I specifically want to play western front sometimes). But as well as gameplay there is the era (WWII compared to modern) and the context in which battles are set (CMC style operational game linked to CM) that can give appeal. CMx2 will - with CMSF on 27th July - give some things and advantages (graphics, gameplay) not in a CMBB/CMC package. But it will be (speculation based on past events and other posts) 1 year later before CMx2 is available for WWII. And (optimism) 1 year after that before a CMC style operational game to link CMx2 WWII battles within. That gives a CMC linked to CMBB a long period of time in which to get finished and still be attractive to many people to a greater or lesser degree in parallel to playing CMx2 games. I personally hope it makes it well within that timeframe. But I'll buy it even if it only makes it 6 months before a forecast end date for a CMC linked with a WWII CMx2 (if such a beast is even ever considered).
  12. Personally, I submitted a bug report to NVIDIA before posting here. Right at the point where you download the latest drivers from their site they encourage people to report bugs with drivers for Vista and make it very easy to do so. But Redwolf is correct - without a slew of bug reports NVIDIA can't do much so I hope all the others here have also sent bug reports to NVIDIA and if not I'd encourage you to do so.
  13. Sivodsi might be right in saying that more people want CMSF than CMC. But I'd like to just throw in a few comments to suggest that it isn't necessarily so and that there's still a case to be made for CMC being favoured: - I'm new to CM series since late summer last year. When I see recent posts in other threads about getting CM to run well with Vista + NVIDIA cards it seems several of those are also new to CM series (e.g. posts in March about wating for CM CDs to arrive). So new people are still coming to CM. - Good gameplay doesn't date. The original wargame is still widely played - chess. I see nothing much dated in CMBB gameplay-wise. Yes, ideally I'd like to see some new things such as re-crewing of guns and also have a better AI but it lives fine as it is and I've yet to see anything with better gameplay. - I'm a new customer and the graphics attracted me. Graphics only need to get to a certain point to be able to give gameplay support and to give a realism feel. I still believe the graphics in CMBB are very, very good. Will they be better in CMSF ? Yes. Is that good ? Yes. Is that necessary for a tactical game ? No. Beyond the level we already have in CMBB, graphics improvements are a welcome "nice to have" rather than an essential. I would agree that better graphics would be needed to attract new people to an FPS or an arcade game but not to a game such as this. - I actually believe that for people playing wargames it is an advantage to offer PIVs in Russia rather than Abrams in Syria - it's more of a challenge. BF are smart enough to realise that a challenge is needed. Hence one post once about making a CMSF mission that might be "lost" if a single Abrams tank is lost. Good idea but there is a risk there too - how many wargamers enjoy it when victory comes easily without losses ? Far more memorable are the close contests when your tactical acumen saved the day pulling victory from the claws of deafeat. I think this is one of the appeals of WWII - different but reasonably closely matched forces (unless 3 Shermans come across 3 Tigers ...) - I don't know the balance between US and non-US players of BF games and the importance of US troops in a game. But CMBB sold well without US forces in it so I'd suggest it's not critical. Just one new voice saying please persevere with CMC. For many of us - including new people like me - it's just what we want. CMBB is still a great game with the biggest opportunity for improvement (IMO) being better linked battles in the way CMC will bring. I'll take that over better graphics or modern tanks any day of the week.
  14. I have same issue with CMBB on Vista with NVIDIA 8600 GTS card. This is with the latest driver (158.24) which is available since 1st June. I had previously tried with the 158.18 driver without success.
