  1. I think I've already found all the mods for MG42 on CMMODS. IMO, none of the sounds do the MG42 justice as the "buzzsaw". They simply don't sound right to me, they sound like just a high rate of fire MG where you can hear each bullet being fired. You shouldn't be able to hear each individual bullet leaving the barrel.
  2. Is there a realistic "ripping" sound mod for the MG42 available anywhere? If so, can someone inform on the name of the mod? Thanks
  3. During 1944 on the Eastern Front, what would each side typically hold a 6km portion of the line with? This would be the period of a lull between any major offensives where it's mostly recon units doing the fighting. From what I gather, at least for the Germans, it would likely only be a battalion holding that much territory. So how would they be spread out to cover that much ground, especially if the terrain is built up with plenty of wooded areas, many scattered villages and hills that block views. Thanks for any info.
  4. I would have tried the demo then uninstalled within 10 minutes like I do with most game demos I try. Wouldn't have given it another look, and likely forgotten about BFC until the advertisment for the modules were plastered all over game websites. Compare that with what happened when I stumbled into BFC in 2000/2001. Ordered the game, not really knowing if I'd like it. I was instantly hooked and played CMBO for several years before taking a long break from wargames in general. Guess which series of games I came back to when I felt like wargaming again? CMx1 is going to stand the test of time for many, many years to come. Luckily for BFC, CMx2 is now appealing to a far larger group of gamers (as they had planned). So they'll still shift a huge number of boxes, regardless of whether the CMx1 vets are completely happy.
  5. Something is terribly wrong here. We should all be raving about how we can't wait for the WWII release of CMx2, yet here we are wanting an updated version of the game that was released 7 years ago. Very disheartening to a lot of wargamers who have been passionate fans of CM for years. Someone with a couple of million dollars disposable cash needs to wire it directly to Steves' account, immediately. Then we'll get the update to the classic and unsurpassable CMx1.
  6. Mishga, and I thought I was lucky having a girlfriend who seemed to take an interest in my CMBB/CMAK pbem turns. On topic, yes, please bring back unit selection for the WWII release. It's a tiny portion of the game, but brings so much enjoyment to many of us. There's a point value system already available directy from CMx1, so it's not exactly going to take much time to implement. (right?) Also, I hope there will be a slightly larger pool of units to select from. Not expecting the scale of the previous releases, but it needs more than what we have with shock force.
  7. Not at all at this time. I don't blame BFC though, it's Paradox's fault it was released 6 months too soon. That was one of the great things about BFC; they didn't have a greedy publisher breathing down thier necks.
  8. Steve Can you at least consider bringing back the points system for the WW2 release? You already have a points sytem in place that most of us are happy with, or accepted in CMx1. Also, considering the ad hoc nature of many WWII battles, "mixing it up" is well within the realms of possibility. I'd argue there should be more ad hoc in shock force, but you've made it clear it's not going to happen.
  9. Would it not be easier for everyone if someone started a Shock Force IRC channel where players can join to find an opponent and to chat about the game? I've played many games of all genres in the past and most of them had a dedicated IRC channel that always had people there 24/7. Why can't this be done for CM:SF? I'd do it myself but I have no interest in TCP play currently. Setup the channel, ask one of the admins to sticky a post with the IRC channel in the title, and voila.
  10. Is there any chance of us having a WW2 forum to post ideas, wants, et cetera? For many of us who were around in the early years of CM, WW2 is what we want to see done 'right'. We know Steve and Co. listen to thier customers most of the time, so might be a good idea for us to have a forum dedicated to helping them develop the game all the old WW2 CM'ers would like to see. Most likely all of us want a product that will make us shelve our CMBO, CMBB and CMAK discs. I have to admit again, I'm worried that what we're given won't ever be able to replace the good old titles that bring so much enjoyment.
  11. Well, I hate windows! I had to format and reinstall XP a couple of days ago because of some major problems, which meant losing my precious CMBB folder. Not having a great internet connection in the country I'm residing in currently, I don't really want to have to download all the terrain to test it out myself. So was hoping for some advice and/or pics with mod names. I want the prettiest, most realistic looking snow and snowless terrain with a topo base. Anyone willing to advise with some details? Thanks
  12. As much as I'd like to see a points system in this release of CMx2, it's been said quite clearly that they will not add it. Not worth continuing to push the idea, it's not going to happen. Let them deal with the urgent issues such as pathfinding, A.I, interface and bugs, then get working on the modules. If anything, we need to persuade Steve and Co. to bring back the points system for the WWII releases. They already have a good points system in place from CMx1, so it will be just a matter of implementing it into the new game.
  13. Exactly thewood. I would be doing that anyway with people I know and trust. I already play QB's where we used the editor to purchase our forces,it's far more flexible, but that's made easier with an actual point value for everything. Would I use the editor to choose forces when playing someone I didn't know? No chance. Anyway, please don't make this into another QB purchase debate, there's another thread for that. There are other issues that are more important that need to be fixed for the WWII game. I'm not going to threaten that I won't buy it, because I most likely will regardless. I want another WWII game that I can play for years as I have with the CMx1 games. I don't possibly see that happening with what we have "upgraded" to here.
  14. Maybe I'm being too pessimistic, but I think this does not bode well for the future CMx2 WWII releases. IMHO, CMx1 is a better game/system with only the exception of the graphics. Look what better graphics and real time play has done to the series. The A.I is quite appalling if it isn't micromanaged constantly, which has pretty much killed the WEGO system and most peoples favourite way of playing: PBEM. I just can't bare to think about how halftracks are going to behave when faced with a tank. Are they going to stay where they are and pepper the enemy AFV with MG rounds? My guess is yes. Without more development work and bringing back the turn compile the A.I will never be as good as in CMx1. Steve has already said there will never be a QB unit purchase option in any CMx2 games, which means the longevity of the game for me (and I guess many others) will be drastically reduced. We're not all cherry pickers, and like a few others have mentioned, being able to spend time thinking and purchasing your force always was half the fun of a QB. I understand they have to make money, and clearly wern't making enough money from the niche market that CMx1 was. I'm just very dissapointed they have strayed so far from thier roots that they have actually gone backwards. SF isn't a bad game, but it's not a scratch on CMBB/CMAK as a serious tactical 3D wargame. I'm not even looking forward to the WWII release anymore, but hopefully my opinion will change in the coming year once(if) they fix Shock Force. I would have preferred if they had updated CM with a new graphics engine and 1 to 1 representation, then stuck on real time play as an afterthought so it would appeal to the masses. Don't fix what isn't broken in the first place.
  15. Are there any good sources showing the general lay of the land during the siege of Moscow? Or, are there any large, accurate maps of the area already being used in a scenario?
  16. I was only just thinking about this and came to post about it. My thoughts were not about a CMBO2 (which is a long way off), but how plausible would it be to upgrade CMBO to the updated CMBB/CMAK engine. I know the engine is the same, but those games had many improvements, including the ability to include far larger unit selections in scenarios, amongst many other improvements, which IMO made them better games (although I hated the NA theatre) I know I would re-buy a CMBO-"gold" version.
  17. Thank you Jason, that is a great help. I have now come to the conclusion a full divisional game on one map is too much, even if half the forces were kept in reserve until late in the game. I'll probably halve the force sizes, which would be a little more realistic and far easier to manage and wont scare off potential opponents so much. Still though, it will be a sizable game, which is what I am looking to create and enjoy playing with other like-minded individuals via pbem. One more quick question : How were Tiger units deployed? Were they thier own seperate units (brigade, company?) and used where needed most? Thanks
  18. Yes, all on one map. Map is being designed to have 3 major seperate battles, and being 4km long gives a long enough front in the game. I will be using the reserve feature though, so it won't be too crowded over the course of a 100+ turn game. I'm well aware that the majority of the time divisions did not commit all thier resources to battle and were likely spread over a 20 mile front. Still, I'm positive this will make for a very exciting game for anyone willing to fight such a battle. A lot of time and effort is going into the map (4th day building and only half done) Back when CMBO was new, I was always complaining about the limited units you could purchase in the editor, not even able to reach regimental strength. I got my wish with CMBB (after coming back to wargaming after 5 years being busy with other things) Still need a little help with the Soviet OOB.
  19. I'm in the process off building a massive, extremely detailed map for a hypothetical Divisional level game in 1945. I've read many sources but I am still not fully decided about what would be included. I've decided the German side will be an SS Panzer Division. So far, from what I've gathered this should consist of : Two Panzer Battalions - I'm unsure of what each battalion would consist of. Two Panzer Grenadier Regiments consisting of: 2x Panzer Grenadier Battalions per Regiment. 1 x Infantry Gun Company per regiment -6x 150mm towed guns per Regiment (1 regiment likely having 6 x self propelled) 1 x Pioneer Company per regiment Combat Support: 1 x Pioneer Battalion 1 x Recon Battalion 1 x Anti Tank Battalion consisting of 3 Companies- 2 self propelled 1 towed. Total of 18 guns. Anti Aircraft Battalion - 2 Companies of 4-6 Flak 88 each. In the game these would be anti tank guns, so would need to either add an extra AA company or change the flaks to 20-37mm. As air support on both sides will be available (3 to 1 ratio for the soviets) I need AA. Divisional artillery will be the only unit I would limit, as that would be too devastating to use the full arsenal available. Ok, that is the SS Panzer Division. Other than needing help assigning tanks to the panzer battalions, I'm quite happy with that. Unless anyone disagrees? Soviet is another matter entirely. I've read plenty of info but it will be much more difficult to create the OOB. This I need help with from any of you in the know. Also, I want the Soviets to have perhaps a 10,000-20,000 point advantage and certainly a lot more tanks available to them. I want to use Soviet guards, by the way. Originally I had planned for this to be an open scenario where my opponent would choose his own historical divisional level force, but to keep the game as historically accurate as possible it's probably best for me to research and build each force myself. Doing it this way ensures realism in the OOB's and gives the Soviet opponent the advantage. Thanks
  20. Where can I find detailed OOB's at the division level for Heer, SS and Soviet units in 1945? Thanks
