  1. Well to be fair, most of the people aren't really explaining their disagreements either, most of the unhappy posts I have seen (not all) have just comprised of "This game is crap" "This game is not CM waaah" etc. If you don't like it, fine, but whining without constructive criticism is tiresome and really not needed.
  2. In the misson description it mentions something about the Germans having minimal cavalry forces deployed in the area (minimal forces in general iirc), so I think the lack of anything above Panzer II's is explained by that. As far as T-34s are concerned, none ever showed up for me, only T-60s, just make sure you save your APCR magazines for them. If you do run out though, more Panzer II Fs and 250's show up with Pak36s so don't worry.
  3. No problems nx. I am pretty sure reinforcements do get added to your reserves roster if they survive the mission, or sometimes they do. I just finished a mission earlier, starting with one Tiger and ending up with another two in the roster after they showed up during the mission. On the other hand I have had reinforcements survive but never seen them again (ATGs and truck drivers).
  4. At the beginning of every mission you are allocated a set amount of points to spend (think of it as the amount of resources available to you) The units on the right are your active units that will be taken into the next battle, however, you can exchange units with those in reserves on the left, by selecting said unit and pressing the buttons which become highlighted underneath the list (Reserves --------> Active) or something similar to that. Each unit is assigned a points value, for example a squad of infantry only costs 50 points where as a medium tank might cost 300-400 points and so on, you are allowed to make up your own composition out of your reserves by exchanging them with active units as long as the points value limit for the mission is not broken. There are some restrictions, some units may be blocked (on either side) and cannot be brought to active status or put back into reserves for that particular mission. New equipment will be issued to you as a campaign progresses but your actual infantry and crew members persist as long as they are not killed and can be moved into new vehicles as you see fit. Captured equipment as far as I know is lost after the battle, assumed that it is taken off for evaluation and standard equipment is resupplied for ease of service and logistics
  5. Yeah you can somewhat, just press Shift+P (Z hides unit icons, C hides view angles and V hides movement markers). Only thing you can't hide is the 'Game Paused', which is a bit annoying but workable.
  6. An infantryman waits patiently with rifle for emerging crew from this T-34 his squadmate just knocked out, he will be waiting a long time however. German tank hunters move from cover to cover in the outskirts of Prokhorovka, leaving silent hulks in their wake. A 190 bounces a couple of Sturmoviks (watching this, unsurprisingly, instantly reminded me of the Sturmovik series). A stroll through the graveyard.
  7. AFVs can reverse, use the retreat command and select the point to reverse to, make sure you order them to hold fire also though otherwise they will keep pausing to return fire. There should be a sticky made about the most frequently asked questions/misunderstandings imo, would help a lot of people.
  8. Armoured infantry advancing across frozen Russian plains. One for the relic hunters, maybe? Operation Zitadelle. A StuG waits in ambush for a T-34 mod. 43 (can see the very top of the turret juuust cresting the slope).
  9. Gonna be a fair few pics here, would have posted more over the last few days but I have been engrossed in the game heh, apart from one mission. Forced me to take a break, my fault though I think, first half went well but lots of second waves came and I refused to give up ground I had taken to a more defendable position. I payed the price, 50% casualties by the end of the mission. Anyway, on to the pics German troops storm a trench through heavy scrub, hurling grenades to dislodge the defenders. A BT-7 tries to counter-attack but the German troops take up anti-tank arms from the defeated Russians in the trenches. Proof that infantry aren't as weak and useless as some would have you believe.
  10. I am pretty sure we are . I have not once had any of my units do something I did not want them to, and if they have, it has been because I have forgotten to give them the order to hold position/hold fire (I do agree that infantry should be able to be ordered to keep their heads down though both in trenches and in the field.). As far as cover goes, I am not having trouble finding it, I think (though I can't be sure) bushes do block line of sight to some extent. I have had tanks not being able to fire at tracks or hulls due to those areas being behind scrub, so that only the turret is visible. Infantry also seems to be concealed by bushes, even if they are firing they seem to take less casualties than being out in the open. It also really pays to move stuff about under complete LOS blockage, rather than taking the quick route from spot to spot. If units are engaged in a heavy firefight you cannot expect to move some allies up straight past them heading into the fire and expect their buddies supporting fire to keep them out of harms way. There are some flaws in the game to be sure, some things need to be added, the ability to ambush (unless doing so anti-tank guns ARE going to get knocked out unless engaging at long distances or where it makes it hard to score a hit with shell trajectory. I cannot imagine it being hard to hit an atg with a HE shell first or second time if the gunner is at all decent at ranges under 300 or 400 metres.) the ability to hold orientation and so on and so forth, lots more of which is requested in the patch threads. In any case, you either like this game or you don't, which is fair enough. I am not seeing a lot of the gripes people are having though. (Bloody editing, only spot my spelling mistakes after I have posted. ) [ April 22, 2007, 01:44 PM: Message edited by: MyCoCo ]
  11. These are really nice shots flint, really envious of your skybox and weather in general I have only had pretty dull weather so far. Do you have the grass settings to 'Very thick'? Looks really nice, lush. As a side note, you said you take shots unpaused? Do you get some stuttering and a brief freeze afterwards? I have to take all my shots paused so something doesn't go awry when I am doing it as it goes as it just locks up until the shot is taken, so I end up having to crop the 'game paused' out. Unless there is a way to turn that off?
  12. I just think you have to be more careful with infantry, or everything for that matter. I am not sure why everyone says they are the win button in these games, well deployed ATGs/sneaky infantry with anti-tank equip equally put the hurt on them provided it isn't outdated equipment. Last mission I played I think I only lost about 14-15 Infantry out of more than 100 personnel, you just need to make sure they move from cover to cover, out of line of sight and then move them into firing positions to cover the rest coming up from behind (I found ordering holding fire on the move was a good idea also unless assaulting a position, seemed to keep them under stealth). If you move them across the open or have them start firing out of cover they really are going to drop like flies.
  13. Thought I would put up a couple of pics from the end of the German 3rd mission, most of my men stayed behind in the trenches to give covering fire but I took a few brave fellows from my veteran squads with IVCs to clear the last Russians dug in around the train station. Felt like a fittingly dramatic end to a fun mission. Unteroffizier Winkle leads those of his squad who aren't too wounded to bear arms effectively into the train station with Panzer IVC support, don't lose your head now lads. Gave most of the squad that was involved in the assault Iron Cross 2nd class after this (10 or so men from two squads combined, rest had to stay back, no point risking wounded soldiers.) They got a nasty surprise of 5 or 6 Russian soldiers dug in a a courtyard behind the station, but they still stormed it under fire and managed to get a few grenades over the bushes, brave lads. 14. I find that ordering your tank to hold fire as it is reversing is a good idea also, otherwise it keeps pausing to fire at whatever you are trying to get out of LOS from.
  15. Some more cover would be nice for infantry but at the moment it isn't too bad I reckon, as long as I don't run the out in open terrain, hill crests and/or brush lines and trees seem to help with concealment and cover. I agree with a hold orientation command being a good idea though, a few times now I have placed a tank in a decent spot to give covering MG fire to advancing infantry only for him to decide that the fleeing tank crew 1.5km behind him are more worthy targets.
  16. I finally figured out what I was doing wrong . I had placed the guns too far back on the crest and I don't think that it could depress far enough to get a shot in. Had a break and came back to kick some ruskie bum, placed the Pak 38s on the brow of a distant hill behind my lines after a long drive, to avoid the T-34s picking the trucks off before I could get into position (luckily I had managed to track a couple of them with tanks that got caught out when they first arrived before they were knocked out so the other one seemed reluctant to move.) got them up there, set up a bit further on the crest, just enough so hitting the guns would be hard for HE shells aaand... Hurrah! Feuer frie! (sp? ) Managed to knock one out quickly with a lucky shot to the mantlet which took out the gun. The T-34 from behind the train station managed to get a lucky shot and killed my well skilled, tankless tank crew manning one of the guns as well as the gun itself. Typical. The other gun stayed safe though and the crew of the second T-34 decided that discretion was the better part of valour after seeing their friends tank get knocked out and several pangs on their own tank. The final one from behind the station got close assaulted by two IVCs with HEAT when he tried to counter attack my infantry in the trenches they had just stormed. T-34s, they ain't so tough. 17. Yeah I thought that might of been the problem. The only member of the squads that came in the trucks that had the guns hitched that had even any gunnery skill were the squad leaders. Even then it was only very low though, between 7 and 9 I think. Does the crew gunner NEED to have gunnery skill for the gun to be usable? I seem to remember crewing guns with infantry with no skill and it worked just fine in the tutorials. Just got no idea why the guns wont even load.
  18. I am pretty sure armour angle is taken into account. The last mission I played I saw an AP round hit the flank of one of my 38(t)s at a very shallow angle, the round flew off almost 90 degrees to the direction it came from.
  19. First of all, I must say thank you to the team for this game and also to Moon and the other staff, I haven't posted before but have been lurking for a while, very pleasant and polite people . I am having a blast with Theatre of War and I think this may be the game which starts me off on the path of tactical wargaming (I have been playing flight sims for a while but was blissfully unaware that anything even reasonably historically accurate was about for wargaming also). Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy my RTS games like CoH but two tanks circling each other to try to hit each others rear armour always looks a bit odd. Enough rambling however and down to the point. I am currently on the third mission for the German campaign an a far bit into it, but then, shock horror. As my flanking force begins storming the trenches whilst my engagement force on hill gives covering fire, 3 T-34s show up in their own flank. Luckily I get some reserves roll in as my tanks start getting knocked, more tanks and some Pak38s. I quickly unload the Pak38s and man them with some of the men in the trucks, bring them up to the brow of a hill, order them to aim for the hull of the T-34s and...nothing? It does say they don't have line of sight (even though looking from their perspective I am pretty sure they do) and they won't even load the gun with a shell. Not sure what I am doing wrong, any advice? [ April 21, 2007, 12:26 PM: Message edited by: MyCoCo ]
