  1. This totally makes sense. When I am driving on the highway, or to the local Burger King, and someone calls me on my cell phone and asks me if I want to come over and hang out, the FIRST thing I do it slam on the breaks! I used to try actually just turning the steering wheel, slowing my car down, and turning casually, but I found that just wasted gas, and you know how expensive gas can be. In this game, it only makes perfect sense. When you are driving a truck through a situation where you are getting shot at, and someone gives you a new order, the first thing they did in WWII was yell, "WOAH, stop the truck, we have a new order!" They would then sit there and wait for the order, and only then would they move. I mean, I think it's a rule of war or something where once a vehicle stops, it's considered "home free" until it starts moving again.
  2. Oh Oh, I have some! "Damn, we missed the trees!" "Oops, can these tanks reverse?" "This is what I think of your Pathfinding!" "Hans, keep shooting at the tank, the 13 Infantry behind us are busy deciding if they should stand up, or go prone!" "Hans, you're blocking my LOS!" Hans, "Hahaha blocking LOS, good one!" German Soldier 1, "Are you dead?" German Soldier 2, "No, but remind me to all the landscaper, this grass is an amazing shade of green" German Soldier 1, "I think this is astroturf." U.S. Soldier, "Ha, I told you if we drove all the way around Berlin we could actually survive an AT attack!" "Hold button, HOLD BUTTON!!...ahhh crap!"
  3. See, this post might seem strange because they are scattering...and while that is true, it is very odd, I think it's more crazy how your vehicles actually were able to avoid the temptation to mow down those trees!!
  4. I just wanted to throw in s "quick" comment (any comment after that post will appear quick). Basically the parts where Gat was talking about the "little guy" syndrome/excuse is kinda why this game makes me cranky. Maybe I am strange, but a good portion of my decision to put money into something comes from trust. In a situation like this, I am seeing a lot of users (myself included) starting to discover problems with this game that could result in it having a very short lifespan. For me, when I ask questions regarding all the problems I see, if the company responds with attitude, or plays the, "We're just little guys" card, then my trust factor starts to slide. What does it matter if I trust them or not you ask? Well, I want to trust the company is going to continue to stand by, and fix the product. If they insist on charging the same price as the other companies, then I want to know they are going to support it at least as well as some of them do. I personally don't think this game should cost what is does considering the fact that it is actually a really old game, full of a lot of problems. However, if they insist on charging that much, I simply want to know that somewhere along the line they, or someone will fix it. With that said, I understand the need for some people around here to defend this game regardless. The company is an obvious one, but there are a lot of people here who have spent a lot of time on these forums and as such, it can feel like a big let down when you start to think possibly your time has been wasted. And then there are the people who have pre-ordered. It's understandable that anyone with a bad thing to say can put that feeling deep down in their stomach where they don't even want to see bad things on a game they have already spent money on. I personally would like the Dev's to stop trying to be something they are not. Stop puffing up their chests and pretending they are larger than life, but playing that "We're only 7 people" card every time something is brought up that can't be explained. Instead of bashing people who are making negative comments towards the game, maybe try embracing the ideas, making note, and doing what is needed to make this game the best it can be. Perhaps that means releasing source code to modders (it's not like industry secrets are going out) and let them run with it. Embrace peoples enthusiasm to help out and set it up in a way that you can regulate it and make sure it's in the best interest of the game. With that said, I don't really trust this company much. They are good at responding to posts on this forum, but there have been little red flags for me that have come up like simply omitting problems (such as the british voices missing) and jsut playing damage control AFTER people have spent thier money.
  5. Hmmmm oh. For the record I pay for it on my end too because I have bandwidth limits on my end. Maybe throw it up on fileplanet or one of those other free sites? Or like I asked, can someone legally put it in a Torrent file or something, that should take the strain off your server. If I burn the digital copy to disk when I download it, can I run it like it would if I got the actual CD backup?
  6. Von, I feel for you man, I am in the same boat. I feel the camera is always working against me when I am trying to get to where I want to be. Sometimes I'll get the camera where I want it, and I'll head down to the bottom of the screen to click the Prone icon and it'll pan backwards. Other times I'll pan sideways and then try to stop on a unit, and it'll seem to continue past that point. Sometimes when I am hitting the middle mouse button and orbiting around, it'll skip forward and throw me off my target. The scroll wheel raises the height, which I am always trying to use as a zoom to the object, I am told you can set it, but I didn't look yet. And sometimes, when I press ENTER, and then ENTER again, the camera will swing me around to the enemy view, and sometimes it won't...I dunno why.
  7. No, see I want both, but I don't understand why it's costing me more money simply to download a file. I'm kinda paying more money in both raised cost, and shipping and handling. It's like I am being "punished" for trying to play the game now, but have a backup. I mean, why not allow users who buy the physical DVD to download the game for free? I mean why not just let anyone download the game for free...it's totally useless without the license anyway. I just feel you're taking advantage of me because I want a physical copy of the manual and game, but I also don't want to wait 14 days for it to ship. So as a result I have to pay what might be $70 + for a $45 dollar game after shipping and exchange. *scratches head* confused.
  8. Umm, I don't understand. Didn't I already get the manual in the demo? As well, maybe I am ignorant, but does it actually cost $45 for a person to download the game? Will you upload a copy to my FTP for free and I can download it for free, then just pay $45 for the license? I guess I just don't understand why the cost isn't free for the download, and $45 for the license, and then when you get a DVD copy, you get a download free. Is it legal for someone else to send me the game digitally, and me pay you for a physical DVD? and save some money?
  9. This is actually what I am waiting for before I get it. I would like to hear how it's working for people cause I almost never play single player games. If anyone can post some videos too, that would be the bees knees!
  10. Can I get a buck off because I don't need the CD or physical manual? Wait a second...why does it cost more to get both the digital download and the CD, and still have shipping and handling? Does it cost the company more for the user to download when you have to ship a CD? Just curious. [ April 20, 2007, 05:42 AM: Message edited by: crazylegsmurphy ]
  11. Maybe, but I like big butts and I can't deny. Moon answered some good questions in there, check it out check it out.
  12. Karma, thats aboot enough outta you eh!
  13. TTorpedo, I was complaining about most of those things too. It drives me batty every time to see Tom Hanks firing his pistol at a tank on the field. I was told to order them a "hold fire" command, but as we all know if you don't get back to them in time, well, who knows if they'll start to fire again when the troops get into view. I too found it hard to keep track of my guys. The scrolling thing under the mini-map is almost 100% useless to me because it's always saying something and I am never looking at it. I personally think they need to issue audio to inform the player of problems. Your idea would work also, just something to keep me updated. I also think a tactical map of some sort is in order. I mean there are times when everyone would get so spread out I simply couldn't get a big picture of all that was going on, so I just tunnel visioned on some random battle. As for AT guns. The more I play the demo, the more it feels like I'm just in one giant flat wheat field like Saskatchewan Canada. Sure there are things all over the place, but it never really feels like any of it matters, especially to troops. I have been told that the units can follow tanks for cover, but I have yet to try.
  14. Don't listen to him Joe! I complained about this when my trucks in the Demo plowed down all the trees to make room for Twin Pines Mall. It's not my fault the units have no ability to think for themselves. I'm not even getting paid for that babysitting gig. I said it once and I'll say it again. You can't just pick and choose AI. There has to be some form of consistency. You can't say, "The units will stand up, lay down, and twirl in circles, regardless of that you want" and "They will fire on anything they see, unless you tell them to hold fire" And then turn around and say, "If you're not making good orders, it's your fault!" You can't just throw AI consistency out the window when it doesn't suit the situation. You can't just call someone stupid for assuming your tanks will at least think somewhat like the rest of your troops. Plain and simple, the pathfinding isn't up to snuff. Someone is trying to play it off as player error, instead of programming errors.
  15. That someone was me. Take a look a few posts down, I asked a buttload of questions that a lot of others are now starting to ask, but for some reason I was the one they threw stones at.
  16. Love me or hate me, my post is like 6 pages long and people are talking. I think that sometimes, as much as no one wants to admit it, they like that one jerkstore who keeps things going. I could have sugar coated my thoughts, but then I feel they would have been lost in a sea of posts. I'm not here to bash the game because I am bored. I am here because sometimes there needs to be a person who takes the side of the unpopular person just so things are said that would never be said. I am ALT TABBING out of the game as we speak, looking at it with a fine toothed comb, and coming here taking in what others are saying and then putting in my thoughts. I may not be right on everything I say, but I think I raise some legit points and when the dust settles, and everyone is done taking their shots at me, all this will be documented and hopefully a great resource for future modders and patchers. And then again, maybe I'll get banned and this topic locked, and deleted, and maybe I'll just have to kick your arses on the battlefield!
  17. This is a story? I think instead I'll be so annoying that you all hate me, but maybe late at night when the Devs are laying in bed, they'll say, "Damn that Crazylegs, he's right!" Then I'll show up here one day and everything'll be fixed, and I'll be like, "Sweet, best game ever!"
  18. Perhaps have the issues I have with this game are simply cost related. What I mean is, I remember when my friend and I happened across two copies of Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds a few years ago for $5 each. We played that game for so long, and I think it was basically because it felt like an awesome value for $5! With ToW, now that I have tried the demo, I guess I am just a tad cranky because I WANT to get the game, but when I ask about what I perceive as flaws in the game, people just respond harshley. I know this seems insulting, but if I happened across this game in a $10 - 20 bin, I would be totally happy because I would feel I got a decent value out of the game. But for this game to be charging pretty much what top of the line games are charging, for outdated animation, graphics, etc...it just seems like I'm being asked to support a small company because they should be like my "buddy" or something instead of a serious game making company. It just seems wrong for the Devs to come on here and say, "We don't have the budgets of the big boys!" yet they want to charge the same amount for the game? I dunno...
  19. Ok, one question..if you Brits use your voices in the game, will you be mad when I kill you in multiplayer? I think it would be funny to hear yourself yelling at yourself all the time in a game. I haven't heard the American voices in place of the British ones, but I have to *erk* at bit at this choice. I don't like when game designers just kinda wait until someone complains then do damage control. I wish it was open from the start issues like this.
  20. You want a pat on the back and a plate of cookies, will that make you feel better? My comments are negative because I'm not here to pin your crayon pictures up on my fridge and say, "Good job Honey!" I'm a person who is trying to like this game, and I did what anyone would do, played the demo, and then asked questions regarding it. You say I have an unwillingness to learn, well that just seems odd considering I am here asking questions. Or maybe what you're actually saying is, "Stop asking questions we don't want to answer because our answers might bring to light some of the issues you are saying?" I am not unwilling to help myself, but what is the point of a forum, if people aren't able to ask questions? Has it ever crossed your mind that others might have similar questions? "I'm only human" isn't a very good excuse when you're asking for peoples money in my opinion. If you admit the game has faults, then instead of bashing people who come up with what they perceive to be other faults, maybe it might be an idea to take note, and see if it's possible to fix them. Or, just simply say, "We don't care that you can't do that, we're not fixing it!" Then anyone who is sitting on the fence can make an informed choice.
  21. Lets see, I have $45 in my pocket, and a bunch of friends who are relying on me to tell them how this game is because I have been preaching in their ears for some time now. Lets see, I read through the manual, and maybe I missed some things, maybe I didn't. The point is, this is a forum, I am asking questions on the forum, if you don't have the answers (or the page numbers in the FM, that I can reference, then maybe you shouldn't add nonsense to the post. Lets see, my situational awareness is what it is, since you have never seen me play the game, you can't comment on it. I have however put a medal in the mail for you, you should be getting it shortly, congrats on having 100% situational awareness on a demo that came out pretty much yesterday!
  22. I found this too. After a while I would simply forget about my Infantry and just move my tanks. Half the problem is that because the battlefield is so big, it becomes tedious to track down each unit and make sure he's doing something of value. I like the idea of individual units but, on this scale, I don't know if it works because everything is so spread out, that when you are zoomed out to see it all, the icons are almost impossible to see (especially on higher resolutions) so you can't really find the person you are looking for. Plus, the demo mission map (and I assume many others) are vast open spaces, you could crawl your units the entire distance, but man...that would take like 4 hours. I just don't feel any personal connection to my units, so if they die, I don't really care. I have been able to beat the missions with just tanks because the small arms fire of the enemy Infantry can't do much to my tanks.
  23. Cool! Thanks Moon! I have been playing the demo a little more this morning taking your answers into consideration, and I thought I would come back and post some follow up questions, as well as suggestions for later based on what I found. Is there not a key that I can assign to this? I tend to get “disoriented” and I get stuck looking in a direction that is nowhere near the battle. This could be my own fault, but it would be cool if there was a “Jump to” button that would default to some structure or unit that would orient me again. Ya, this is the trouble I am having. When I am quickly trying to navigate around the battle using the mini-map, I find that when I click on the map, it puts me way up and above the unit(s) I am trying to view. This causes me to have to pan back, then scroll down, then rotate the camera. I feel like I am spending more time finding things, than I am controlling them. Maybe the camera needs to default to a downwards looking position when you click the map, or maybe the map needs to be bigger, or there needs to be a tactical map so you can quickly assess the battle and get to places. Cool, I tried to move them behind things, but then because I don’t really know what the units are seeing, when I move them behind bushes or trees, I am playing a guessing game as to what they can see. I found a few times that they would simply lose sight of a tank, and sit there…once I moved them back out into the open, they were targets again. This is fair, it does seem a tad strange to me that a battle ready troop would panic, and simply lay on the ground and do nothing, but a critically wounded person would continue to fight. Seems kinda switched to me in the sense that if a unit is panicked, I should be able to coax him to retreat or move or get off the field, but a critically wounded (I am assuming close to death) would simply slump down, yell at the top of his lungs, and not care much about anything. Hmm, I am glad people don’t do that on the highway when they are getting directions from people on cell phones! It seems to me that a vehicle would continue to drive and when orders came in over the radio or whatnot, they would simply turn the wheel to a new location. The stopping and starting creates a situation I am finding where they become targets much easier than if they were to continue moving. This becomes increasingly hard when you have a light vehicle trying to get the jump on an AT gun, or another light vehicle that has a better weapon. Every time I adjust the direction to compensate for the other vehicle, my vehicle stops on a dime, then slowly changes direction, and slowly accelerates..this makes them a sitting duck. From what I could tell (and this seemed to happen quite a bit) three enemy troops would be running and my guys would be chasing them. The two were in clear view, but others would pop in and out of focus. I don’t know if they were laying down, or what, but it seemed odd. Because I don’t have any idea what my units are actually seeing on a 3D plane (yes I can see the cone of sight, but it doesn’t apply to anything really) then it makes it hard for me to position my units in a way where they are looking at specific things. I was afraid of that. If you have ever played sports you know how good communication is the key to winning games. Teams that don’t talk are lost on the field. While the message panel does tell me feedback, it’s very passive in nature. This means that unless I am sitting there reading that thing all the time, I have no idea what is happening to my units. I don’t suggest everything be yelling at me all the time, but panning away to reposition my AT gun, then coming back to find my units engaged with a tank without notice can be a tad frustrating. Perhaps a solution if audio cues aren’t able to be added, would be to have the messages pop up on the left side of the screen in different colors to suggest different problems. The panel below the mini-map is ok for information, but it’s not in a place where you are looking all the time, and to have to visually scroll through countless responses means you’re already 5 minutes behind the battle. That soldier in trouble could be dead by the time you catch up to his “post”. I’ll have to post a video. I just find that it tends to pan and skip forward instead of staying stationary, it’s almost like there is a scroll forward command that is fighting the rotation command. Oh, that kinda sucks. It would be cool to be able to protect guns/MG’s that need to be moved. But then I can’t hear them. If “someone” were to extract the file, tone down the volume and then re-upload it into the game, would that solve the problem? Hmm, ya, I find the cone to be almost useless. It shows me the direction the unit is looking, but in a 3D world that means nothing when the unit’s cone extends to full range even if I am standing him in front of a wall. Ok cool, but then how do I get them to fire on troops that pop into their visual site? I mean I understand that I am in control of the troops, but in a real world situation I would yell, “Hold fire!” and it would go down the line automatically. Common sense on the other hand would dictate that my troops wouldn’t fire off rounds at tanks because they had been trained to have more patience than that. So while a hold fire command works for each unit, it becomes a tad tedious when I have to “think” for my troops. I feel they should have enough brain power to be able to hold fire until they see a killable threat. Or at the very least, they should be warning me through audio responses that “enemy’s spotted, permission to fire sir?” How come units think sometimes, and other times I’m responsible for them thinking? What I mean is, it seems inconsistent that they will choose to stand up in an open field, but I have to tell them that isn’t a good idea if shots are whizzing by their heads. This applies to my previous question as well, and also why would they lay down in the grass when being chased by other soldiers? Ninja Vanish? If you could, would you mind just posting them from your production notes? I am sure there are a few here that would rather just see what the game can do, set the settings and then spend more time playing instead of trial and erroring the settings. You are right; I didn’t even notice the mini-map problems. As I said before the message box is almost useless at the moment because it requires constant attention. Plus I don’t know who “Johnny Jones” is, so a lot of those messages are totally vague. Maybe a flashing icon, or maybe an audio response, or a sound or something would help alert the player to the problems. That’s cool that they look for cover once the panic, but once they panic they are not useful in a fight. It would make more sense to me that they would seek out cover before they panic, and then when they do panic they would simply stay behind cover and not come out. What if I don’t have the bodies showing in the settings menu, will they just show up as equipment? Will any soldier pick them up regardless of the weapon they have, how do I keep a unit with a carbine from picking up rounds for a Thompson? Why do they do this at free will? I think it would make more sense if the units were able to sneak up on enemy positions instead of sprinting everywhere they go. Since you stated they respond to noise, it would only make sense that they were smart enough to make less noise. Of course, but without any indication of the LOS of a unit, it’s like playing “peek-a-boo” all the time. The unit is running away, runs behind a tree and, “Oh…where did he go?” then my unit stops…scratches his head, then, “Peek-a-boo!” the enemy runs out from behind the tree and hey, my units start to attack again. Because I can’t see what they see, I am playing a game of, “I know where he is because my memory is longer than that of a fruit fly, but my units seem to forget, and don’t communicate what they see to each other, so I have to guess where to put them in order for them to see the enemy again. I think it would make sense if the AI once “locked” onto a target, would continue to track that target with some form of intelligence until I decided to call them off, or they lost sight of them for more than say 5 seconds. This would help perusing enemy units into dense brush, or urban places because my units would have enough brains to realize when they run behind stuff, they haven’t been sucked into the vortex of doom. I appreciate the answers for sure! I am still playing the demo, trying to get a hang of it.
