  1. one Brigade of 1st Armoured Division (7th Armoured Brigade) took part, but it was reinforced by a number of elements from the rest of the division, not least of which was another tank battalion. British armoured Brigades these days only have one Tank battalion usually. Off the top of my head the 2 leading tank battalions were Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and 2nd Royal Tank Regiment, but they were reinforced by elements of other Regiments, one of which I seem to recall was Queens Royal Lancers. Basically 1st Armoured Division was anything but, 2 of its Brigades were light infantry.
  2. There was one Challenger2 during operation telic that was immobilized by reversing into a ditch. It was engaged by a milan atgm, scored at least 7 hits on it by rpgs, and had all the gunner and commanders optics knocked out. Then the iraqis climbed on the vehicle, jumped up and down on it, and presumably tried to prise the hatches open. The crew remained calm and stayed in the tank till the rest of the troop turned up and drove the Iraqis away, then they recovered the vehicle. The crew and the tank were back in combat inside of a few days. So no, I wouldnt say its unrealistic. Atypical, mayble. You should be able to reenter the tank, if it isnt damaged anyway.
  3. I tried the scenario where a company of Abrams goes up against a (I never learned quite how many) of T90s (bad moon rising). The result was about7 burned out Abrams, and the rest had knocked their tracks off. It was roughly an equal number of burned out T90s. But as has already been said, more Abrams crews survived than those of T90s. They have roughly comparable performance to an Abrams at long to medium range in good conditions, but close the gap and they start dying. And when a T90 brews, the crew usually doesnt survive.... Just curious, did you have M1A1s or A2s?
  4. I really like this one, it really reminds me of the battle of mirbat, when a handful of SAS troopers held off 200 enemy rebels. Very nice work.
  5. Yes, I only noted last night that they use Canadian built M4s, what did that occur? It WOULD be nice to have them in, if only for the scenario builders. Re Gurkhas, I take the point, but it would completely destroy play balance. You would have to put in a squad of T1000 Terminators just to break even.
  6. Damn it. Dick van Dyke is going to be SO disappointed. LOL webwings.
  7. I love that last photo. You can almost hear the hapless army guy shouting 'Nooooooooooo!' Im downloading this, it looks great fun.
  8. It would be amusing to have bagpipes stowed in Warriors assigned to Scottish regiments, that when assigned to one trooper gives a 50 percent bonus in morale and attacking But in reality, even the Scots probably are not crazy enough to use them in combat. Nah, they probably are. Id like to see 22 SAS as well, but in fairness they probably are outside the scope of the game. Their primary role is recce. They HAVE performed attack roles, particularly in Afghanistan, but at least as far as the scenario of the game is concerned, they probably would be out of place. On the other hand, with the equipment in the game already, you can probably simulate them relatively accurately in scenarios. Though Im guessing the M16s might be a problem.... Gurkhas at least in terms of orbat would be identical to any other light role infantry battalion. Using the Gurkha knives in combat would be interesting, but as bayoneting doesnt seem simulated at the moment, I dont think they would get the chance to use them. Correct me if Im wrong, but isnt Striker being withdrawn from service? I know some of the older Swingfire rounds were being destroyed in the bristol channel as early as 5 years ago.
  9. No problem, just glad ive got it to play with. I had trouble installing it myself. If you look in the tech support it advises installing something called Active X cab. I had trouble installing that too (I eventually managed it using Vistas advised settings), but after I had it installed GE path worked fine.
  10. its got to be said, this is an excellent tool, and many thanks for pointing it out. At the risk of being a pain, dont suppose you have had any time to put together that pdf?
  11. Seconded. Or maybe the Arab Israeli conflict in 1973. Russia V Nato in the Baltic states?
  12. I think for urban operations, the Challenger2 is pretty well setup. With the new toe armour package thats just been developed and the new machine gun the loader can operate under armour, I think that it has the Abrams beat. Post Tusk and I think the only significant advantage the Abrams has is the ammunition, and Challenger2 is getting the smoothbore sometime in the next 10 years. Leopard looks great with Slat armour, by the Challys had that for the past 4 years. Understand Im not razzing anyone elses armour here. ive just looked at the Challenger2 dorchester level 2 F armour package, and I think people greatly underestimate how thick the side armour is.
  13. The book the film was based upon was excellent. I dont know if the first battle would work or not, but I would love to see it tried. The second battle would perhaps be more interesting. One battalion was pretty much bushwacked by an advancing NVA unit, which by chance or design found itself in a perfect ambush position. The US battalion was widely strung out, and at least one US company was nearly wiped out. That by itself would be an interesting fight. Anyone here think that a Vietnam pack would be an excellent future addon for SF?
  14. One excellent book from the British perspective is Sniper one, about a British army sniper team in Al Amarah. They didnt just do sniping, they also went out on patrol, and some of the contacts they had were truly remarkable. One guy claimed to have a RPDs 7.62 rounds fly between his legs. Good though Shockforce is, I suspect they would have a job modelling something like that!
