  1. I wonder what the developers are thinking right now.
  2. Wow Blaine you are a godsend. This game is lame out of the box, I'm fighting to want to love it, but some things just don't work the way they should. If you think the AI is BS, then you are 100% that they need to focus on MP. I touched on some ideas to make the MP interface more easily accessable, but I can't make any suggestions for behind the scenes code that I have no clue about. I think my ideas were more work then BF intended to do for a simple patch, but I would like to see what BF roadmap and patch fixes list look like... http://www.battlefront.com/cgi-bin/bbs/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=63;t=000762
  3. The mission where you have to defend against a tank rush to your bunker, my AT crew die's all the time and I lose the mission. I tried placing them in every position before the match started and that makes no difference. It's funny, when that mission starts, I run everybody to the back bunker that seperates the two AT guns and after they get de-crewed, I have more troops to recrew the guns. But the only people with high gun skills are the original men that are on the gun. With a game this complex and where your entire mission is riding on one or two units. If there's any gameplay issues that cause you to lose, or makes those units ineffective for any reason, I just start cursing at the screen and bang my fists on the desk.
  4. I'm gonna sell my copy on ebay too, it's gonna be fun because you'll have to give bullet points on what's so great about the game, when typing the page, but most of what I type will be exactly the opposite of how I feel. The game is just too boring. When SF comes out, I'll be sure to test the demo before I buy, and If they try and trick me again by saying there won't be a demo, I won't get the game.
  5. Multiplayer still has the 'enter ip address of host to play multiplayer' system. I want TOW to be more exciting! Playing real people online who talk smack during the game should do it. In 3 months from now, I'll get bored of the same old single player, just like it did in Combat Missions. I don't want that to happen with this game, it's just so much more advanced than CM and deserves to stay on my hard drive for more than 3 months! What you see after clicking that multiplayer button: 1) A news page where BF developers can keep you up-to-date on the latest developments, major bug fixes, patches, big announcements, etc. 2) An email button - to check your battlefront email. This is how you will play-by-email and by being able to read your email, inside of the game, you won't get distracted trying to use outlook with TOW. You simply look in your unread mail inbox and double click on that email from your opponent, which loads the game fast, you find what your opponents latest move was, then you can do your move, and click the send email button to finish - simple. 3) A Chat Room button - I have no clue what will go on in this room, but I hope it will stay game related and it makes it much easier for players to organize games, discuss tactics, strategies, and anything else that is legal. 4) A Game Browser button - Lists all the 'in progress games', and all players that are waiting for someone to join their game. You simply double click on a game to play. No pencil and paper required to write down IP addresses. No reading books to find out what an IP address means and what IP stands for. 5) Recorded Games button - You can replay all the 'play-by-email' games in their entirety. You can even load up the latest match between the top USA and top German player using the advanced search feature. I think this is the best way to improve your tactics & strategies, to learn from others. The next step is to review the recorded games in the forums and go over what the player did right or wrong and how you would've played it differently. 6) Rankings button - With no ratings system built into the game, you have no idea who you are playing and what their skill is, until you mop the floor with them. A simple ELO ratings system, like the one used in Chess, would work just fine. Without ratings, there is no point to play multiplayer, unless it's for fun and you are not trying to become a better player. Ratings are the only way to become a better player because they keep you focused. TOW is one of the most advanced war simulations on the planet and without a ratings system, multiplayer games will never be considered 'competitive', but rather 'a fun thing to do' ---------------------------------- Those additions will keep the replay value WAY up on this game, and when TOW 2 is released, I would be very excited about TOW 2 and would nag all my friends to buy the game when it comes out. Let me know what you think. [ April 22, 2007, 06:42 PM: Message edited by: WooTzu ]
  6. Scratch my post above. The prince comes through for me and answers my prayers. I vote Eckmuhl king of BF !!! Honestly, all I can relate to you is my own experience. I pre-ordered the game, and received a confirmation of purchase email that included the download link. When I visited the forum this evening and learned that downloads had begun, I went to my email client and clicked on that link. It took me straight to the download page where I provided my proof-of-purchase code. I was then able to download the game. PoE </font>
  7. Sigh. I got CM:AK and CM:BB, BF makes great war simulations. I don't doubt TOW will be great also. Keep hope alive!!! But I'm disapointed. Not for the delay, but the fact that I had to read this bs thread to find out what's causing the delay and what the ETA for release is and I still can't find an answer. Please post something on the news page before midnight tonight. Thanks.

  12. No problem, I just want to play the dam game. I'm too excited, it's way above and beyond combat missions. But the videos are pretty lame, I know that it's all we got, but it'd be nice if we had a demo that was released sometime in March to wet our appetites and eliminate buyers remorse. Ok, I'll quit complaining. I'm glad the game is finally taken out of beta stages after, what was it, 4 years and 3 name changes later? I'M SO HAPPY YOU WILL BE SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY! Not many companies care and just hope communities build themselves... But you beta testers, you guys suck. I don't care if you been playing for 4 friggin years, I'm gonna mop up the floor with ya'll in multiplayer !!!
  13. For people who have pre-ordered the game, can we please have access to the beta forums? Probably not much there as far as content goes, but we can get some more insight on how the game operates more Plus I'm sure that there are some 'tactical' tips in that forum as well that will help us hit the ground running. Please voice your questions or concerns. Thanks.
  14. Stop it already! Man! It's like dangling a carrot in front of the rabbit, sooner or later the rabbit will get too hungry and chew its arm off. My new computer should be ready this weekend. I'll be willing to wait in line to do whatever rune asks of me, I'm tired of waiting.
  15. WOW!!! This game looks amazing even from a low-res YouTube video! The people that own the russian version and the beta testers are some of the luckiest sons of beaches.
  16. This game must and will feature extensive multiplayer support! Why? Because TOW is the first RTS that Battlefront developed to my knowledge and RTS's of the 21st century require multiplayer support. Yes TOW is still a wargame at heart, it's the most realistic and best looking battlefield simulator on the planet. But its seems that TOW is being played as an RTS and not a turn-based game. (see this thread for proof - note that the skilled player rarely paused the game at all, except to marvel at the graphics or to move to another point on the map where his reinforcements have arrived) From my RTS experience, I will typically play single player for about 1-8 weeks, depending on the learning curve of the game and how long it takes me to find the weaknesses of the AI. Singleplayer reusability doesn't have much to do with the number of campaigns if the AI is very bad, but if the AI is still better than me after I have beaten all of the campaigns on medium AI difficulty level, I'll likely jack the AI to max and take another stab at all of the campaigns as long as the AI doesn't cheat. Some RTS games will let their AI see through the fog of war even though you can't, hard to believe but it's true. It makes the game really boring, you might rush into the enemys flank with some tanks only to find 3 AT guns pointing right at you. My goal of single player isn't to beat the AI, and it's not to beat the game. Instead it's to become the most skilled player that I can become as fast as possible. I want to defeat my opponent using real-world military strategies & tactics, instead of fake tricks that will only be usuable against one opponent, such as exploiting their specific weakness that I have learned from playing against them so many times. This makes my experience from the game applicable to other games and also to just about anything else in life, in theory at least. So what happens after about 2 months? Why can't I play single player for more than 2 months? I'm always on the hunt for more challenges, since I know my oppenents weakensses and strengths (the AI) I will exploit them every opportunity I get. Usually the AI doesn't learn my weaknesses and strengths, so the games are mostly one-sided and I lose interest in a game that isn't challenging. Online multiplay is the only answer! You will take your inflated ego that you have from slaughtering the AI everytime, and put it up against veteran online players. Next you'll wallow in self pity as all of your AI exploits don't work and the games that you play tend to make you look like an idiot. Plus, I am willing to make a bet that real-world military strategies & tactics are more usable in multiplayer games vs. a real person than an AI opponent, in general. I can not make this claim against a game that I haven't played like TOW, but from my experience with RTS games, this usually is the truth. But you have come too far to give up after getting slaughtered in your multiplayer adventure. Online players are even so kind to help you justify your experience, they call you a newbie, and that you have no skill. The stage is set, so you work hard to become better than everybody else. You have a ranking system that tells you how good you are doing compared to everybody else, and you will do everything in your power to become number one. It's one of the most exciting features of multiplayer, the strive for excellence. From my experience (sorry, but I don't have any survey results to get an accurate sample of video game players, please reply if you do!). Turn-based games (civilization and other wargames) have very limited multiplayer use and the games last more than 3 hours, so you have to work on arranging games, etc. It just doesn't work. Singleplayer is the only way to go for very long games. For RTS, Sports, and FPS games, multiplayer is the way to go. Singleplayer use is limited by the amount of challenges that you can give the player. And games are just like movies, it takes hours and sometime days of time to design and shoot a short 5 second video clip for the viewer. Your time is better spent on implementing a multiplayer feature that way players can challenge each other. Multiplayer is the direction that all games are taking and it's also the direction that TOW needs to and will take. If multiplayer isn't working at release (I don't count TCP/IP as multiplayer), then it must be ready by the time the first person no longer finds the game challenging anymore. If it's not ready by then, you will lose that customer forever or at least until they find out you have implemented multiplayer functionality. But by then it might be too late. TOW is a new game genre. Die hard RTS fans that love realistic war simulations will fall in love with TOW. If Battlefront doesn't implement multiplayer, then what's to stop another game from copying TOW and implementing multiplayer?
  17. Great idea. Play the game between 1x and 1/8x speed. Selectable at the beginning of a game before the match starts and you also can lock the speed before the game starts. Plus you can change speed in mid-game if both parties agree on the change AND the speed wasn't locked beforehand. But if pausing is required, use the time controls from a chess game. Each player is given a certain amound of pause time before the game begins (say one hour). If the player hits pause, not only does their pause time decrease, but the other player CAN NOT issue orders while the game was paused by their opponent, they can only stare at the board and do Line of sight, etc. A benefit is that it makes it much easier to figure out how long a battle might last before the game starts.

    Replays

I believe I found part of my answer from a post: "At the time we got no final statement of Megakill - only the comment that it is based on the Il2-engine and that the Il2 engine has a recording feature implemented that allows, after a mission, to record, rewind, save" here Will the replay's be recorded as files, and how large will the files be, on average?

    Replays

Hi. TOW looks great, exactly what everybody wants in a game, I like it. I just got CMBB yesterday and just found out that CMBB doesn't support replays. Will TOW support replays and will it allow you to save those replays as a file? That way you can put it on some forum for other people to watch. It's really powerful and will get people who are skeptical, to at least try the game.
