  1. They crash alright. As I remember they only leave a mark on the ground, but rarely do they crash in the playable area.
  2. Yes, there are street fights in villages. No map in the game is flat, some even have quite big hills, but there are no Omaha or Juno maps.
  3. Even though infantry can't enter buildings, the fight near or in hamlets is nevertheless very dangerous for the attacking force. Most of the hamlet's are fenced in and have bushes, so it's very hard to spot enemy infantry, especially from a tank. It's very easy for enemy to destroy your tank with weapons like bazooka or even hand grenades. And it's hard to storm a hamlet with infantry, because even one machinegunner can be very tough to take out.
  4. Here's the official Russian website http://ww2.games.1c.ru It's not available for digital download as far as I know, you should check Russian online shops if they can mail the game to you. I have bought it at a local mall, so I guess your best chance is to ask someone in Russia or other countries where the game's available to mail it to you.
  5. Yup, this beta patch is definitely a great improvement and I only played the first mission in Poland yet. It made me want to play the whole game all over again.
  6. In the russian version there are no squads as we know them from CM. Each soldier is represented on its own. The whole "squad" (consisting of about 10 men) can be selected by double clicking on it's commander. Guns are manned by 2 and more soldiers, depending on the gun, but can be partially operated by one man only. Same with tanks, where even one man can operate it by switching positions in it.
  7. In the russian version units do whatever you tell them with a short delay (1-2 secs). It's longer if your tankers are in a unfamiliar tank, at least at first, before they "know the tank better". Also in the russian version there are no rewind, record buttons. When playing the game I didn't feel panic or that it was chaos. If you do not rush into trouble, you'll be ok.
  8. I haven't played it online as none of my friends have the game and I know no russian players. I can only tell of the pregame options. You can choose your side, colour and alliance. As I understood, there are no game types, you only have to complete the map objectives (destroy the enemy). Some maps support up to 8 players. I tried to host a server and play on my own, but after the map loaded I was given an instant victory as there was no opponents.
  9. The recently released patch somewhat improved game's performance, so it runs a bit better on my PC. I didn't notice any other differences..
  10. You misunderstood me. I meant to say that if you play good and don't lose many units, you may not even need the reinforcements, but sometimes still get them. And about the multiplayer, you have to know the host's IP to join the game, because there's no browser, so I didn't get to play online.
  11. That's about right, but initial force varies from mission to mission. Counterattacks usually occur after an objective is completed. Like in the first US mission you have to destroy the attacking germans, then move into a town and destroy the remaining forces, the objective is completed then and a counterattack with tanks and numerous infantry begins. After destroyed that mission is completed. In other missions you maybe on the defensive at first and then counterattack yourself. And in polish missions you have to withstand wave after wave of german attacks. As I said earlier in the easier mission you may even not need the reinforcements to win but still get them. In Prokhorovka I had a huge armada of Tigers, StuGs and Pz.IVs. It's definitely not boring, because you have to think to win. Just sometimes you notice how stupid some things are made in this russian version. For example for some reason tank battles in Normandy are totally unrealistic. Having 3 Tigers in Villers-Bocage I had to attack english column and then engage in battle with Cromwells. Tiger's inaccuracy and inability to penetrate Cromwell armor was ridiculous. And just now I completed second Allied mission where tank battle between my Cromwells, Churchills and german Pz.IV at less than 100 m ranges. Neither side was able to penetrate enemy tanks armor without firing at least 12 rounds (all the tanks combined). Most missions are of average difficuly, some, like Prokhorovka are very easy, and some, like Stalingrad, Wittman in Bocage, first US mission (paratroopers vs Pz.IVs) are quite hard and need several attempts to finish. And the last polish mission I was unable to complete for it is very hard.
  12. You usually get reinforcements when you loose certain units. The tanks not always are better, sometimes they're the same. Also it depends on the map, in Polish campaign you get more infantry reinforcements than, let's say, german campaign. But generally you get reinforcements after losing your units (or when your infantry's morale drops and they start running away). No slowdowns when there's more infantry on the map, it more depends on the map size and armoured units I guess. In the first US mission there's a lot of infantry but performance was the same.
  13. Well, I can only speak about the russian version and the answer would be "no". I can only name a few advantages of this game: good graphics and sound, many vehicles, I would say many missions and I guess the gameplay is immersing. However there are too much minuses: unrealistic penetration ranges and accuracy, unrealistic speeds, problems with LOS, AI is not great, not too much things you can do with tanks to name a few. I think and hope many of these things can be fixed in BFC version, but TOW won't be able to match CM when it comes to number of actions units can do.
  14. You're welcome Rollstoy. No mobile HMG teams. You can sometimes order HMG before the mission if it's defensive, but in the whole german campaign I've now completed if i remember right I came across only 1 HMG and that was american 12.7 mm in Ardennes mission. As you can see in the following video you can't move it. Artillery is just guns, no mortars or rockets (yet). In fact you have some on map artillery, like Brummbar, Wespe, Hummel, american 105 mm from the video, etc.
  15. Here's an example, sorry for the slow framerate: I can make more videos, just tell me what you want to see in them.
  16. The LOS thing is a bit frustrating. If there's no LOS after ordering the tank to fire at a target, it moves about 10 meters towards it, stops, checks if there's LOS and then again moves 10 meters. This continues until it finally can see the target. But then sometimes the tank starts making strange manoeuvres, so usually after the first shot I order my tanks to Hold position.
  17. Soldiers can either be in a tank or on the ground. Nothing in between. A tank can see enemies if they are close to it and enemies a bit farther from it if they are in front of it. Also there's the "Attack ground" function, so if you see only smoke from guns but not them themselves, you can shoot around that point with some success. But this function does not always work because line of sight is blocked and it's very difficult to determine when a tank can see the target (in CM you could press L key to know that)..
  18. Of course, it's no CM. Well at least if you don't have some infantrymen, you should order one of the crewmen to have a look around for a good view.
  19. Here's the first polish mission:
  20. When artillery hits trees, they fall down. Buildings also can be destroyed by artillery or tank/gun fire. Tanks do not crush buildings as they even avoid going through a wooden fence (sometimes they go through them, but I haven't yet figured out what causes them not to want to go through some light obstacles). Infantry not being able to enter buildings is not a big problem, because mission are made in such a way that battles are fought only on outskirts of villages. 21. Athlon 3200+, 1GB RAM, Radeon 9800Pro.
  22. There's at least 2 obligatory infantry squads (you can't remove them from initial forces, and it has a red title "Blocked" on it) in "combined arms" maps and there was 1 in Prokhorovka. You can't transport troops on tanks, but they would be killed instantly by enemy MG fire, because tanks not only shoot at enemy tanks from their main guns but from MG's also. One thing I forgot to mention is it's always good to have some infantry at the front, because tanks can't see very well, so they do not always spot enemies. In the Stalingrad mission I had 2 tanks and no infantry at one moment and they could not see any enemies. Just as one of the tank crews climbed out of their tank 1 enemy squad and 2 tanks appeared 500 m away. On my PC it runs really bad. 10-15 FPS at best. But it depends on the map and number of units. On a smaller map it runs decent, but now I just played Prokhorovka map and it was terrible. I noticed that during the setup phase before the battle framerate is very good. I guess this is because tanks are not animated then. When playing smoke comes from the engines, when tanks move they leave trails on the grass and even bits of soil come off the tracks. Also everything is much more detailed when you zoom in. The problem is that when you zoom out, you get no detail and no FPS either. I have one more thing to say about campaign mode. When playing for germans you get 1 mission in Poland, 1 in France, then 2 near Moscow, 1 near Stalingrad, then 1 in Prokhorovka and the next mission I'll play will take place in March 1944. I don't know if it's such a good idea to pick some battles from all the war and just put them into 1 campaign..
  23. Trucks can be used to quickly bring troops to the front. Halftracks can be used for that too and their MGs are quite effective against infantry. Armored cars can be brought up to take care of enemy gun crews, infantry and light tanks, though they are not accurate from a far distance. Mission I'm playing now has Sd.kz.7 with either 2 cm or 3.7 cm FlaK. At least the 2 cm version was effective against soviet ground attack planes. In the same mission I encountered a bug with PaK.38. For some reason the crew refused to shoot at enemy tank, despite it being 100 metres away. When they finally started shooting at it, the gun barrel was turned to the right, so all the shots missed, though the "Attack" arrow was pointing to the tank. I'm having difficulty completing this mission, because it's difficult to destroy KV1s with Pz.IIIs and Pz.IVs with short barelled guns. Also it doesn't end even if all of my soldiers are dead.. It's more of a problem with cooperation between a number of tanks or tanks with infantry. Units find their way to their objective pretty well, if it's not in a village, but there were no battles in the village itself yet. As I said if you select more than 3 tanks and order them to move in a tight formation, then they wait for one other to get up to speed and therefore the whole formation moves slowly. But normally you don't get like a dozen of tanks, so no problems. Also in the campaign every mission was with combined arms. It's a better feeling, when the mision has some infantry. So the first mission I wrote about maybe was an exception. No, I didn't notice anything like that. By the way, all the data like models, textures, sounds and maps are stored in big .SFS files in the root folder of the game. I heard that IL-2 files were stored in similar files and that they were coded? 24. No problem guys, after waiting so long for this game it's nice to finally try it out. Now I have completed 4 missions in german campaign (1 in Poland which AAR was posted, 1 in France where I had to cross a river and take a village and 2 in Russia near Moscow). In these missions infantry was present and quite a bit of strategy was required to defeat the enemy. For example in first mission against soviets, I destroyed soviet infantry in the trenches and rushed with my tanks and infantry to the train station I had to take. Soviets counterattacked with 2 T-34s, some BT-7s and infantry and destroyed my entire force (1 Pz.IV, 2 Pz.IIIs, 3 38(t)s and 2 infantry squads). I received my reinforcements and successfully destroyed their tanks without losing too many of mine but again rushed to the train station and got destroyed by 57 mm guns and ground attack planes. When I replayed the mission, before soviet counterattack I retreated my infantry to the trenches and used my tanks more wisely and didn't even need the reinforcements. So far the key to success is to send the infantry near some bushes to inspect enemy defences and then use the tanks to shoot at enemy guns from a distance. Enemy counterattacks usually fail as my tanks take care of enemy tanks and infantry without any cover. I've noticed that sometimes enemy tanks just stand and do nothing while mine are shooting at them. That should be fixed. Also so far I do not see any point in using artillery or airstrikes as they are very ineffective. It's a bad idea to order tanks move in formation with infantry as tanks have trouble navigating between soldiers and as a result everybody moves very slowly. Also about the speed, some tanks start to move at a high speed from the start, which is not very realistic. And one note from the first mission I played. Tiger, Panther and Jagdtiger move very quickly in cross country (40 km/h or so) and it looks very unrealistic. When I ordered a Jagdpanther, a Tiger II and a Jagdtiger move to a point around 300 m away, Jagdtiger was the quickest to arrive and others arrived like 6 secs later. Heaviest piece of armour shouldn't be so quick.. So speeds are not very realistic, I hope BFC will fix that..
