  1. OK, after puttering around with this for a bit with no solution in sight, I decided to find out about the possibility of installing an XP partition alongside my Vista install and dual booting. Here's a link to the best tutorial I found: http://apcmag.com/5485/dualbooting_vista_and_xp Apparently it involves booting into the PBE (pre-boot environment) on the Vista install disk and using a tool on the disk called DISKPART to resize the Vista partition. Then you install XP to the newly freed space, then you repair the Vista bootloader, which will have been overwritten by the XP installation. I haven't tried this yet, but the instructions seem logically consistent-- it doesn't look like the process is for neophytes though. I will report on my results when I get enough spare time to run the experiment.
  2. Here's a link to Microsoft's Knowledge Base that shows how to reset the TCP/IP stack. May or may not be for your OS... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357
  3. Before you reformat, you should try a System Restore (assuming you are running XP or Vista). Pick the restore point just prior to installing Hamachi and restore to that. This is easy and may fix your problem-- if it does, that saves you from redoing everything. OK, I just googled Hamachi and I see it's a VPN app. So it probably messed with your TCP/IP stack. Another intermediate step you can try before you format & restore is to find one of the apps which restore your winsock stack to default. There are several available, if I recall properly Sysinternals makes one. Otherwise you can google for one. You might as well try these intermediate steps before you reformat & restore; they might solve your issue and if they don't you are no worse off. 4. If all you did was replace the video card, did you delete the preferences file in the game directory? It could be that the system is trying to load the game in a mode your old card/monitor combination supported but the new one does not... If you rename the preferences file to *.old and reload the game, it should cause the system to enumerate the modes it's capable of displaying, and this may fix your problem. Good luck!
  5. Sgt, it actually looks like the problem exists in the Nvidia drivers for Vista, since only one series of vid cards are reportedly affected: Nvidia 8xxx series. Sounds like you have an ATI video card which should work. (No fog is a known ATI bug)
  6. OK, then. End of life data for Windows XP can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/default.mspx Basically looks like June 30 2008 is the cut off date for OEM, and January 31, 2009 is the cutoff date for system builders. That's for availability. If they follow their historical practice, patches should be available for several years yet. However, Microsoft has a habit of slipping these dates forward in response to consumer demand. YMMV.
  7. I have the same results. In fact, the ONLY applications- I've had real trouble (defined as 'not able to get it working') with are CMAK and CMBB. It's kind of ironic that I can get V4Victory (an ancient DOS game) to run on Vista but I can't get CM to run. Unfortunately, there aren't any easy options to get CM running on your Vista machine. If you are so inclined, you can check out the Technical Support forum thread where some of us are hashing over the options. Basically it boils down to downgrade to XP, add an XP partition and dual boot, or add a Linux partition and dual boot. Of those, downgrading is the least technically challenging option. @easytarget-- Dude, this isn't a 'bash Vista' thread. Hari asked a technical question about Vista support. So what does he get? Instead of any kind of rational help, he gets replies of various flavors of 'I hate Vista'. It's not helpful in the least. You don't like Vista? I don't care! I don't particularly care for Vista, but it's not painful enough for me to be willing to install XP. Trying to hijack a request for assistance because you don't like the O/S the guy is using is weak. :/ [ January 14, 2008, 07:56 PM: Message edited by: J.R. ]
  8. I'm not sure I understand why the double step down is considered unrealistic. Tank Platoons that don't have radio communication will have to get their instructions from the PLT Leader by way of hand-and-arm signals, flag signals, smoke or some other method that depends on vision. If the TC is buttoned up, he is going to have a much harder time responding to the PL's direction. Being buttoned up cuts down on a tanker's situational awareness much more than one might think, also. Even if the vehicle has vision blocks, they are often dirty or cracked and even when clean and new are inadequate IMO. IIRC, that's why the German tanks had a 'half closed' position on the TC's hatch-- so he could have his hatch cracked and keep his head partially up while getting some cover benefit. I doubt the early Soviet tanks had this feature, though I don't know. Perhaps the estimable JasonC could enlighten us?
  9. I am, on my laptop. I really could not care less for your opinion of my O/S choices. Hari, to answer your original question, I doubt it will be Vista compatible, since from what I've read the CMC game will produce a scenario to be run on the original CMBB game. As it's the case that many of us, including myself, are having problems getting CMBB to run properly on Vista, that kind of shoots the whole idea down the crapper.
  10. Try right clicking on the installer and selecting 'Run as Admin'.
  11. OK, this sounds to me like possible Virtual Memory issues-- I mean possibly with the file itself, not necessarily your settings. Have you checked your disk for errors? You can do this from the same tab you use to defrag. Make sure to select the option to check unused sectors. The box will tell you it can't get exclusive access, and ask you if you want to do the check at boot time. OK this and restart. The chkdsk screen should come up. Let it run-- it may take quite awhile. Another option is to clear your VM entirely by selecting the appropriate item from the advanced setting tab on My Computer. Restart. Don't try to run anything, just let the system boot-- with your limited RAM, you won't be likely to be able to start anything without running out of memory. Then reset your VM settings to whatever you think you want. Personally, I use a set 2048MB. Setting max and min to the same size supposedly lays out the VM file contiguously and in a special format that speeds up VM access. IIRC, VM is supposed to be set to double the physical RAM on the system. Like I said above, personally I just set it to 2048. Hope this helps!
  12. Please, could all have the good taste to keep our political and sociological opinions private (or air them in a more appropriate location)? I was enjoying this thread...
  13. I am running 32 bit Vista on this laptop. I have not tried 64 bit. I seem to remember CM ran properly at first but then broke with the symptoms described earlier, possibly after an update. Didn't mention this before because I didn't have any details and I didn't want to muddy the water. I will try to get something submitted to Nvidia after the holiday. Thanks for the follow up.
