  1. Never ones to dissapoint, the Germans seem to have found a way to turn trees into soldiers. Obviously the result of some dark occult Nazi machinations, or perhaps a hideous mind control experiment? Either way the bombs the Luftwaffe dropped into my trenches were real enough. Ironically the unit that actually took the casualties fared the best. My Battalion HQ took one look at the crater and decided to break. Very inspiring to the men, yes thank you, please report to a desk job. Equally inspiring was the Bofors crew that surrendered while still sharing a foxhole behind sandags with his Company HQ.

Its not all bad. The bombs that landed on my head sent his boys diving for cover, too. My opponent seems to think there is a "front". It is more of a perverse form of solitare with blue on red on blue. Wait till I pull out my aces!

One thing that puzzles me. For Paras they seem to have a lot of ammo...

  2. To SO, I'm not correcting you but adding a bit of general info to your post.

If you're speaking in terms of hand grenades I concur. But in general, as you start adding explosive the power increases at a mathematic progression. Large bombs release so much energy so quickly that it is like getting slapped with a wall of steel moving 500mph. But, It would be hard to throw a grenade that big very far.

If the grenade is close enough when it pops even in the open you can get stunned because eyes and ears are sensitive, but the concussion isn't what is considered lethal.

I will admit I have never had a grenade go off near me (but have had some pretty close calls with home made fireworks from crazy friends...ahh good times), so my knowledge of such things are purely scholarly

  3. The esteemed Corvidae and I are currently engaged in mortal PBEM struggle in the "On the Edge" scenario. I am commanding the freedom loving English speaking defenders and he leads the sinister (albeit hardy) fascist airborne horde. I chose this scenario because except for a general idea of what happened I had no real knowledge of the battle.

We are about 14 turns into the game and it is finally getting interesting, messy or whatever adjective you like. My trump was the 4 bofors "protected" by infantry but apparently the counter for Bofors is a ME 110. In the first few turns he destroyed 3 of them with a single pass. So I guess Bofors is latin for "bomb magnet". Luckily I blew up his cheeky flyboy on its subsequent pass with my remaining gun.

In the initial stages of combat a squad of his snake eaters presented themselves boldly to the entire gun battery. While they were twisting getting chewed into gibs of meat (ahh, the memories..) another Fallshimwhatsit infiltrated my lines and essentially shot my FO in the back of the head leaving me w/o artillery support. So naturally I decided it was a good idea to send a platoon of green troops rushing toward what I percieved was a lone squad inside my lines. Whoops. He all but eliminated 2 squads and supressed the rest with the remainder of his platoon. Unfortunatly for him that platoon was now on top of a steep hill with just about the whole world shooting at them. They don't seem to be doing too well.

My later attempts to shift forces to pocket him have been less than stellar. My green units really seem resistant to being shot at and they are quite fond of abandoning their carriers, guns, position, duty, etc. There now seems to be a German para behind every tree. From my perspective the map currently looks more like a WarTribes Deathmatch than any sort of tactical situation.

I welcome Corvidae to post his remarks, analysis, taunts or gloats. If anyone wants to take a peek I'll send you a file but NO sharing my password! ;)

Purely anecdotal, for what it is worth.

The fiercest INF on INF enagement in PBEM I ever had was in Palms. I even had a vet Stuart using all 3 mg's from 80 meters hosing a DAK squad and they would barely flinch. I also had a Brit Squad 15 meters away exchanging grenades and hard looks and a bren 50 meters providing area fire from the the left flank; all for about 3 minutes. Neither side really was taking casualties until his guys finally died all at once (my guess is that the volume of fire finally broke his unit and as soon as he started to run he was cut down, but it happened so fast it just looked like he went from full strength to dead instantly). At least the result was logical considering the odds but it seemed a little too hard to kill him. Probably just one of those things.

  5. What I love about this forum is I have learned how to offend people all over the world in a myriad of ways!

I can use the term Nazi/Soviet/Swede apologist (that really gets their goat!) and now I have the "J" word?

But seriously, since I am a poor "Yank" from Southern California (where most people don't even really know what a Yank is..) I would be curious to hear from members from around the globe as to what terms really are insulting and which are friendly.

Yank is friendly unless you're from the Southern US, but my southern cousins would not be offended if someone from across the pond said 'Yank' because they know it means US American, not Yankee. (My in-laws are from Tennessee and Connecticut, we have some intersting family discussions). But to be honest I don't really know how 'Kiwi' sounds to a New Zealander. Is it condescending? I'm pretty sure 'Aussie' is okay because its also a brand name. My Canadian friend doesn't seem to mind 'Canuck' or 'Hoser' but he draws the line at 'drooling neanderthal'. tongue.gif

  6. As I understand it as muzzle velocity increases the potential speed of a vehicle is less of a defensive factor. Except that I guess a faster AFV can break LOS sooner limitng its exposure time. But it seems to me that (remember we're talking 1940's drivetrains)That whether a vehicle is moving 26mph or 35mph won't matter that much. None of the AFV's of the time are going to spin up and take off like Nazi UFO.

An interesting book I read relating to this topic was titled "Men Agianst Tanks" unfortunately I don't remember the author. It is basically a history or tanks v anti-tank technology. By default it describes AFV evolution because of their environment. It is heavy on WWII history. If every body started using TD's then some smart alec would invent a new system to counter lightly armored fast AFV's Oh wait its called PAK.

  7. I like your suggestion, DT. I have not played lots of the CMBO scenarios but I think one that may make for good analysis is "Cracking the Egg". In my opinion its a nice big map but not too big. As the attacker you get lots of armor and some infantry, but if you don't play smart you can still get chewed up by the 88's and Tiger reinforcements.

The only weakness as a teaching tool I see is

as the attcker you don't have to think too much about how to use your forces as there isn't much of a mix.

It is one of the first scenarios I ever played. I haven't looked at it in awhile so I think I'll check it out again with my new 'veteran' eyes

-To the second part of your point, DT. I don't think I'm comprehending exactly what you mean by "to a map which the points can be aimed.." Are you saying that we could simply use a scenario map to illustrate our ideas but without discussing scenario itself? Like using the map as a chess board to work out solutions?

Perhaps if people would quote a scenario from the CD it could then form the map for discussing the tactics. And I do mean a map to which the points can be aimed not a re-hash of the battles fought there with the forces provided in the scenario.

  8. I do believe the Tiger is Taken out by a HQ and not the Squad..that was great entertainment. Was your friend trying to drive through the building?

The heroic Achilles was fun. You friend ws probably pulling his hair out. Usually the CPU does that kind of thing to me. Nice to see it happen in someone's favor?

Could you tell me which turn has the Stug destruction? I think I missed it

  9. John,

You had the misfortune of quoting a 'journalist' who didn't know enough about the subject he was writing about to know how to present the information. While the points in the Time article are essentially correct, the context they are used in is misleading.

Ketosis is not the process of using muscle tissue for food, so you used the wrong word. Wiki's description of Ketosis is accurate. It is possible that some of the Brit's experienced ketosis, but unlikely because once you reintroduce enough carbs ketosis ends. They were merely starving.

If you really care, I can tell you how many calories are contained in the blood, muscles, organs and fat of the body and how it gets used. But its hardly germaine to the topic. Suffice to say the poor lads on the ground in the Falklands on both sides really had a miserable time and endured more than I think could be expected of any soldier considering what was at stake.

  10. I had a simliar experience with vehicles once. I think it was a corrupted save file. When I played the scenairo over again it was fine. Perhaps a just a glitch? Maybe try reinstalling that scenario or your game?

One time the AI stopped working all together. It took awhile for me to figure out what was happening. I thought the AI was getting really sneaky because nothing was happening at all.

    I still lost....j/K
