  1. I'm new. I recognise historical scenarios are sometimes inevitably unbalanced. That said, I want to avoid wasting precious leisure time playing unbalanced and ahistorical scenarios. I gather 'Wittmann in the East' is one such scenario. Any others I should look out for? Thanks in anticipation!
  2. Having gone away for a few days over Easter it waqs something of a surprise to see this thread continuing. Perhaps my mistake was not heading it up - unbalanced/ahistorical scenarios to avoid? I got some good information from Jason C and Andreas about a couple of scenarios, a comment that said, in effect, I should play and learn from a very helpful correspondent, witnessed a very passionate debate about indigenous peoples and was satirised. Six pages of posts in total.
  3. Okay, let's all take a deep breath and try again shall we... Are there any other scenarios out there that are a) unbalanced and ahistorical So I can avoid wasting time on them... Cheers, Billy
  4. This thread seems to have struck a few nerves. Thanks to everyone who has posted, great to hear your views. I believe that many of the opinions expressed are irreconciliable in that they are expressions of philosophical differences. On a practical level, I've learned I never want to play 'Wittmann in the East'. Any other scenarios out there that are so unbalanced AND ahistorical that I should avoid them? Thanks in anticipation
  5. This was raised in the 'Wittmann in the East' discussions and, I think, is a wider issue that I'd appreciate people's views on. I share other correspondents' views that there are scenarios out there that, for want of a better phrase, are neo nazi in sympathy in that they are set up to allow the Axis player to win easily regardless of the Allied player's response. I fully accept that there are historical scenarios where this will occur but the example being discussed (Wittmann in the East) is ahistorical. Personally, I'm uncomfortable about ever playing as the Axis (and this is not to say that I shouldn't feel uncomfortable about playing as the Soviets given the character of Stalin's regime), and haven't modified my edition of CMBB (or CMAK) to display swastikas for this very reason. I'd very much like guidance on 'scenarios to avoid' that are ahistorical vehicles for neo nazism. Billy Prior
  6. Thanks Jason C for that advice. I'm grateful for the time and trouble you've gone to and will have a go at those KTs again. Thanks also John Kettler for the warm welcome I learned far more about Bagration than I ever expected to from everyone else! So thanks to other posters Okay, can anyone recommend some Bagaration era scenarios that have the Soviets taking on a more historically typical German force? I've downloaded Sword of Bagration from the Proving Grounds but have yet to paly it. It looks promising though- great map! BTW, I read that by mid 1944 there were normally only about 80 or so Tigers operational on the whole of the Ostfront on any given day (Erickson) and that most Tigers that were ko'd in action were ko'd by infantry in close combat. A good proportion were lost as a consequence of mechanical breakdown and more as a result of air attack. The same source states that it was rare for a Tiger to be ko'd by an enemy tank. I guess this would make sense. In the scenario that prompted my earlier post I couldn't help thinking that if I was Colonel Denisovich commanding the Soviets I'd be appealing for more artillery and air assets (if I could get my Commissar on side to back my request...)to help sort out the KTs rather than trying to make do with what I had. Cheers, Billy
  7. Hi All, This is my first post on this forum. I've been playing about six months against the AI and have worked through Jason C's Russian training secenarios as well as trying scenarios in the copy of CMBB I bought here in New Zealand. I've read and tried to follow advice here and in the CMBB Guide. I always play Soviets and have gradually improved to the point where I am reasonably confident defending and becoming more confident on the offensive. One aspect of attacking is proving frustrating and that is coming up against Tigers and Royal Tigers (and, to a lesser extent, Panthers) in scenarios where the weather is good and and the terrain relatively open and the map big. I find it very difficult to make progress with armour in such situations and if , as is ususally the case, the Germans have infantry as well, it's difficult to move forward with infantry within the (usually tight) turn limits. A specific example is an Operation titled 'Mobile Defence'. The first couple of battlles were fine- Nashorns and Pz IVs I can handle. By battle 4 I'm up against a couple of Royal Tigers (this is suppose to be Bagration- were any of these monsters around then?) and it's hopeless. I've tried everything I can think of, narrow front, broad front, shoot and scoot, narrow covered arcs, a mass charge, fast outflanking moves- it all ends in a lot of scrap metal... Should I be despondent? I know some scenarios are virtually impossible to win depending on which side you play but... And I hardly ever meet Pz IV or StuG III's in 1944 - 45 era battles I play - it's much more likely I'll encounter the Big Cats. Should that happen (historically)? All help much appreciated. Billy
  8. Perhaps I'm IT challenged but I've paid for it and been unable to download a file that I can read. Very frustrating. I've tried reading all the FAQs on Direct 2 Drive's website and (day's ago) contacting support. No reply as yet. First time I've bought an item like this and probabaly the last unles someone can help me out. It may be my fault so I'm happy to listen to suggestions.
