  1. Hi SeaMonkey I actually enjoy both WAW and SC for differing reasons. Compared to WAW I like the more frequent turns of SC and the availability of corps sized units. I think the naval element in SC is somewhat better but WAW scores in having the whole world including Pacific. The impact of random chance of R&D improvements in SC is possibly too big a factor - if you are going to spend many hours playing a game I prefer the random element to be relatively low. As far as I can judge it seems that SC2 is majoring on better (?) graphics rather than extending the scope. Personally I am not too bothered with graphics (I would still be quite happy with push out cardboard counters apart from cats knocking them over!) so that seems a shame to me but hopefully SC2 will have some other novel features and I am looking forward to it. Regards Mike
  2. Hi JerseyJohn This was actually only my third full attempt at a game. My first was as Axis on 50%/50% difficulty which I won by destroying the Allied navies with a U-Boat pack (most AI's do not understand the principle of force concentration), my second was as Allies on 100%/50% difficulty which ended as a draw with me battering at Berlin and Rome in 1947. My third (this game)as Allies 100%/50% has ended in victory in Summer 1945. In the first two games I had made some errors due to not fully understanding the HQ/supply rules but I think I have it about right now. Most AI's have difficulty in understanding the big picture but I think SC does a pretty reasonable job of tactics. The main weakness seems to be that it tends to use air attacks first. Since a player has most flexibility in deploying air, I guess a human would be more likely to use air after the dice rolls for ground attacks have been revealed and opportunities to destroy enemy units are more apparent. Regards Mike
  3. It may be a bit late in the day to be raising funnies on SC but it is a new game for me so here goes anyway! I am playing as Allies (versus AI) and have already caused Italy to surrender - Germany battles on. The Axis had conquered Greece some long time before but now there is a German unit sitting on Athens. I send various fleet units to batter the port and I get reports such as Italy loses 2mp. Is this just a reporting error or is the strategic damage not actually hurting the current owner Germany? Regards Mike
  4. Thanks for that Bill101. I had not thought about spotting the CV's probably because it does seem strange that CV strength goes up with range but then I suppose it was thought that WW2 Carriers would not be able to land jets. I am in any event currently playing the Allies (only my second game) and the German AI has decided not to adopt a naval strategy, mind you it only has one or perhaps two aircraft left (it is 1946) so not really following an air strategy either!
  5. Hi Is there any way I can tell if my opponent has developed longer range aircraft either before or (more likely) after he has used the facility against me. This may sound a bit strange so I will clarify. Do I have to keep noting where my opponent's air originated and count the hexes or is there some unit characteristic (like the jet a/c blobs and changing images) that also indicates that they have drop tanks or whatever. Finally it would be a nice feature (SC2?) if the R&D table was populated for your opponent, even with FOW on, with the information that you have had the opportunity to observe. Thus this info might not be correct, as your opponent might have secretly progressed, but it would reflect what you would know if you had been paying attention.
  6. Hi Desert Dave Actually I did wait until the US had joined the conflict before taking the Irish under Allied protection. I used US land forces and named one of the US naval units involved PT-109 so that the Irish would not take too great an exception. Regards
  7. Hi Terif Thanks for answer it was as I expected. Before I invaded I somehow expected that Operate might work once I had Dublin. Ah well I am sure the Irish will organise a fine wake for my unit and I guess over time the points gain will be worth the loss.
  8. I am new to this game although enjoying it a lot. I have one small question to which I guess I know the answer. Having decided as the Allies to pop over to Ireland for a drop of Guinness and some much needed points I seem to have missed the last ferry home. Is there actually any way by which I can get my land unit back to England? My guess is that I will just have to stay and enjoy the famous Irish hospitality!
