  1. I think it is up to the perception of whomever writes the reports. What exactly is an "American" style defense?
  2. The 101st had yet to see combat before D-Day. Neither had the 29th Inf (4th?). These were divisions of green troops, and while I am sure not everyone acted heroically or bravely, some of them did.
  3. The round fired by the AVRE was not a HEAT round. HESH was developed by the British specifically for spalling concrete, but proved to have a good penetration capability. I could be wrong, but isn't HESH a type of shaped charge?
  4. Smoke grenades for infantry would be useful much as smoke dischargers are for tanks. If you are taking fire or moving across an open space, a smoke grenade could offer some concealment until you reach cover. And if not offer total concealment then at least slow down the speed at which said unit is spotted.
  5. You should be able to blow them up.
  6. The French had a large rail system in the 1930s but if the track is not connecting two major yards, it is probably only single track with passing sidings. It is cheaper that way.
  7. There was more single main line track in France at the start of WW2 than there was double main line. It is cheaper to lay one line with passing sidings than it is to lay two lines. You must also remember the physical properties of rail as well. Things such as elevated road beds would make good cover for infantry and even better hull down positions. Another thing. Will we see telephone lines running alongside tracks and into cities, or does this require too much coding for what is a minor detail?
  8. Actually Dorosh, you were right. The dismount teams of the mechanized platoons consist of six men.
  9. You wouldn't necessarily need any reorganization. You could just divide and load by fire team.
  10. And it would appear the AFV in the picture is so.
  11. I believe that no more patches for SC1 will be made.
  12. If the vehicle is that close, the crew will aim over open sights, or right down the barrel.
  13. In close infantry combat, I use bazookas against infantry squads. A single rocket is often enough, especially against green troops, to pin or sometimes panic the squad even if there are no casualties. It can take riflemen a while to attain the same results, and usually casualties have to be inflicted first.
  14. Blitzkreig in WWI? I believe a key point of blitzkrieg is the use of armored forces to break through. Kind of hard to do wen your tanks move 8 mph tops. Arial support is also part of this tactic. Kind of hard to get from inaccurate biplanes carrying 150 lbs of bombs. Blitzkreig in Poland, the West, Russia? It depends on if you're a purist. Some people say these were blitzkrieg attacks as the basic principles were there. Others say some or all were not really blitzkreig because they didn't precisely follow all of the guidelines. I say it doesn't really matter whether or not they were true blitzkreig attacks because the Germans won in all of these instances, and resoundingly. "Blitzkreig" is an overused catch-all for German offensives, though some were actually blitzkriegs. [ August 31, 2005, 09:01 PM: Message edited by: stoat ]
  15. A couple of points for consideration: 1. Lasers were invented in 1958. 2. How do you use a laser with a mortar? 3. How would this actually affect targeting within the game? (Do you want altered accuracy, or just a different ammo load?) 4. Mortar-fired anti-tank? How does that work?
  16. This would all depend on the SP's point of view. Since you can look at the field from above, you know how large the stand of trees is and exactly where you want to put the shells. However, the gun only sees 5-10 feet into the trees, max. It has no idea what is behind those 5-10 feet. I agree that this capability would be nice, but in real life spotter planes had to be used to direct fire onto locations like these. Also, your flat trajectory will make it likely that you will hit a big tree some meters from your aiming point.
