That's very close to Kherson. I brace myself for what is going to be found there.

The front lines seem to be getting very confused in Kherson Oblast, both here in the south and north in the Kryvyi Rih direction. On this map, I've put in blue Okeksandria which Ukraine definitely holds, then three villages in red that Ukraine says it withdrew from in the last day or two. Yellow is Bilozerka, where there is fighting (and where there was fighting reported 3-4 days ago I believe). And for reference, purple is the frequenly on fire Kherson airport.

If all these reports are still accurate, some of the Russians along the T1501 road are in danger - there would be no way out of there without swimming.

Note, once again, the if those reports are still accurate though.

  2. Russia has apparently "officially confirmed" that the explosion at the Belgorod arsenal on March 29th was due to 3 Tochka-U missiles from Ukraine, which injured 8 people and destroyed 21 vehicles.

IIRC That's the one where there's footage of two Ukrainian helicopters firing rockets in the attack, which probably tells you how reliable Russia's 'confirmation' is.

Yup, but comments about energy needs applies no matter what.  The big energy consumption is getting the drone off the ground and keeping it in the air.  Lateral movement doesn't matter as much, though obviously it does add up.

    Steve

And now I'm picturing a tank surrounded by helium balloon drones carrying sensor packages.

For illustrative purposes, here's such a next gen tank that you might see at this year's May parade in Red Square:

Our troops is trying to take the town Beryslav, which can cut off Russian forces around Velyka Olexandrivka area

Now that would be a nice town to retake and effectively trap all the Russian forces north of the dam in a pocket with their back to the Dneipr. One of the maps I've seen shows 2-3 BTGs holding the dam and the areas north towards Kryvyi Rih - is that still roughly correct as far as you know?

Technical question for the smart ATGM people here. From earlier posts a couple hundred pages ago there was talk of being able to remote fire the Javelin. Looking around online I can't find a couple things I'm curious about:

I think we might have to chalk this up to me having false memory syndrome. I could have sworn I'd seen a video of a UK javelin being set up on a tripod on a roof in Afghanistan and fired remotely, but I can't find anything now to suggest that this is true. I've been walking around for 10 years with the apparently incorrect belief that UK Javelins had some kind of remote launch capability.

My best guess is I took the UK change of having a tripod, read about the detachable CLU (which all variants have), jumped to the wrong conclusion and conflated it with a mis-remembered video.

So in short, I think I was talking utter rubbish :)

  6. More fun in Belgorod region. It seems doubtful to me that Ukraine would try another air strike on Belgorod right now, so maybe this is Russians getting jumpy. Or Russia trying to ramp up the sense of danger for its citizens.

    • This morning, missiles launched from Belgorod, supposedly air defence: https://t.me/zhest_belgorod/10415
    • In neighbouring Kursk region, Russia says its border checkpoint at Sudzha was shelled by a mortar and border guards returned fire: https://t.me/informnapalm/6312
    • Yesterday, explosion in Krasnogvadersky district of Belgorod oblast - district head says it wasn't because of shelling: https://t.me/bbbreaking/121946
    • Also yesterday, explosions reported over Belgorod
  7. India has previously declined to criticise Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, but today has condemned the killing of civilians in Bucha and called for an independent investigation. If you are being more cautious you might note that it hasn't actually gone as far as blaming Russia for the killings, so this probably means less than some people are reading in to it.

  8. At least some of the Russian units have withdrawn completely rather than be moved elsewhere in theatre. Aside from this convoy heading north past Orsha, there was also a group of 8+ Russian helicopters that left Belarus to move Ostrov area close the Latvian border. Which all starts to sound like they're being put in to storage to replace the border units withdrawn from the Baltics region,  and will be there rebuilding for a while.

I have said since the start of the war, without any evidence, that Belarus contributed forces to the invasion in some form or another.  It was a hunch that something would go over.  Security units seem the most likely as they are more-or-less not likely to mutiny.

Although aren't there more Belarusians fighting as volunteers on the Ukrainian side than on the Russian side? Or did I dream that report somewhere?

I talked to a lot of russians and hear them talk a lot in the last 8 years to know about this classic "let's act naїve" act. It's almost like a group mentality in relation to standing up for holiness of their country where they consciously deny every obvious fact until they can't anymore. Then they go "well Ukrainians deserved it anyway, whatcha gonna do about it?".

Another variant popular in politics has 4 stepe:

    1. It's not true

    2. It's not true

    3. It's not true

    4. It's old news

You don't have to like it but it's not trolling and if it offends you this much.

Are you being deliberately dumb here?  The reason you are correctly being accused of trolling isn't what you say about the Russians.  It's because you have decided that it's the "PC and woke" brigade that are the entire problem in the west.

I saw that, but couldn't make out if they were Ukrainian or Russians looking for something.  I assumed the latter.

This could be a ground based attack, but I think we'd have seen more evidence of that.  The various vehicles seem to be exploding with no noticeable ground activity around them.

    Steve

If you want to be more cynical, they could be abandoned Russia vehicles discovered by Ukrainian infantry and then blown up with placed explosives for cinematic purposes.

  13. Ukrainian army are now in Ivankiv, where the P-02 highway NW form Kyiv crosses the Teteriv river. So Russia appears to be completely abandoning the Kyiv axis now, not just trying to hold on with reduced forces but stop offensive action.

Bad news for any Russians who hadn't made it back past that river line yet - they're rather cut off now. No indication so of how many (if any) are now stranded.

(On the map, the red truck icons are from Russia withdrawing about 24 hours ago, so there's a lot here that's out of date).

(EDIT: I see The_MonkeyKing beat me to it just above).

What is this? This town Orlove, Zaporizhia Oblast really taken back? (circled on the red)

    image.thumb.png.80cc2b4de8895886ebef63328f7fb90f.png

I suspect not - there is an Orlove in Kherson oblast, and the article is wrong. Orlove in Kherson is right next to Zagradivka and Kochubeyeka, and is almost certainly what was meant. The article says:

"Units of the Defense Forces restored control over the settlements of Orlove (Zaporizhzhya region. - Ed.), Zagradivka, Kochubeyevka (both - Kherson. - Ed.)"

so I assume the editorial insert was wrong.

The Russian convoy did not use any anti-radiation gear while taking Chernobyl, which was “suicidal,” according to Chernobyl employees.

One employee said that the radioactive dust inhaled by Russian soldiers is likely to result in internal radiation in their bodies."

Alpha radiation is bad for this as it isn't very penetrating, unlike gamma rays.

A gamma ray source is equally dangerous no matter where it is - a certain flux will interact with the entire mass of your body with some degree of probability, and the rest pass through.

Conversely alpha radiation can be stopped by a piece of paper, so if it is external, it is basically not going to get past your clothes and not really cause you a significant problem. But if you breath in dust that is an alpha source, you have the opposite problem - it is now inside you and not getting out, so all the energy from the radioactive particles gets dumped into cell damage inside your body.

  16. Quote

Russia’s deputy defense minister says Moscow has decided to “fundamentally cut back military activity in the direction of Kyiv and Chernigiv” in order to “increase mutual trust for future negotiations to agree and sign a peace deal with Ukraine.”

Yeah, I'm sure that's why they are doing it, and not because they've frittered away the ability to support those axes in any meaningful way.
