  1. Hi. I remember some TMs or FMs about hedgerows here or at least some informal instructions or references as to how they were used Trying to do design some first person shooter style maps with boccage and hedgerows and I was wondering if anybody has any real good references or pictures of what it's like to be inside boccage. The game already has boccage and such but most of it isn't very usable and we're trying to get replicate long strings of hedgerows that act as fighting positions. Most first person games make them as basically walls which only funnel players around, completely squandering the capacity to have firefights. I was in Normandy in 2010 but I neglected to take photos of how useful the hedgerows were. Thanks
  2. I've been there and it's true it's like that. However I would think that was from air bombardment. I know most, if not all, of the bombs targeting beaches like Omaha missed completely. But i think they used air to hit Point du Hoc. I wouldn't think a ship could get a shell there from that trajectory but maybe I'm wrong. Unless the terrain sloped downward towards the ocean? I don't recall that it did. This photo is from Wiki and implies there was special effort made to knock it out by air.
  3. I notice a lot of these youtube accounts are being terminated for whatever reason because a lot of these links are already down... If you want to rip a youtube video it's very easy. I use google chrome regularly but I only know how with Internet explorer. Go to tools ---> internet options --> under browsing history "settings" --> view files. Arrange them by size and the video file is usually one of the largest ~ 1000kb a minute or so. Drag it onto your computer somewhere to keep a copy and name it since it probably won't have a good one. You have to wait until the video is fully buffered on youtube before you open this and In my experience you can only rip one video per time opening of internet explorer (you have to close IE and open again). I've tried and it works on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. If you can't open the video file, try downloading a media player called VLC, it opens about everything. It's a shame when youtube videos are lost and it's so easy to share them. Gives a whole new meaning to the concept of "file sharing." The videos are literally downloaded onto your computer anyway as soon as they buffer and there's not much they can do to stop this. It's just a matter of knowing where to look.
  4. Where is the key located on the case? I'm reinstalling the game on a new machine after a couple years and I can't find it on the case or in the "FM 21-100" All the links for activating are broken or tell me I'm not authorized to view this source on battlefront.com 's link for "reactivating" key or Battlefront.com/helpdesk AAhhhh nevermind. Read the manual under installing and how to find... never thought about reading those dumb sections before Oh sweeet.... it was even under an e-mail I still use.
  5. Is RO2: DH even out yet? RO2 has been an unmitigated disaster from what everybody I hear from. When it first came out, there was a massive migration from RnL to RO2. Then it tapered off and people started coming back. Next thing I know, refugees from RO2 who never played RnL are coming. I half downloaded the RO2 free weekend from recently. And I was told its not worth finishing the download. Since it was 10GB I didnt RnL is obviously unfinished, but once you play for a bit, you don't notice that anymore.
  6. I've posted about this before maybe 2 years ago. I thought it might interest some of you, especially Combat Mission types because it's a game bent on realistic infantry combat. The community is much more active than before but we have problems with player quality. A lot of young players and IMO the low quality and lack of competitive clans has a lot to do with the drop in quality. I've had a server for about a year, I am very active and have been since 2005, before the first versions were even released and helped "beta" test the original Alpha release. I'm 26, I'm an Army vet and I am very good at the game. The game touts a suppression system and such, however if you ask me the system does not work very well, there are lots of defects. But the developers are willing to learn and change things on feedback. Development has slowed down to about a patch a year and I'm concerned about the concept being lost if things don't change. There's absolutely no HUD, no death messages, no crosshairs, no score even. Damage is fairly realistic. The voice chat is local and 3D, louder the farther away. You can hear enemy talk if they are within range too. Sometimes a single pistol round will drop you. If you are familiar with Red Orchestra, its what RO should have been more like. It's nothing near perfect but its better than anything else out there. So if you can imagine yourself playing a shooter... I could really use mature players who are willing to learn and some time to play. This is the website www.resistanceandliberation.com If you install steam -> it should have an option to install "SDK Base 2007" or something similar. That is the engine given away for free which the mod requires. This is my steam profile. If you are interested, let me know here because I get lots of people adding me as a friend which I ignore. http://steamcommunity.com/id/Poorlaggedman/ A lot of servers have reduced spawn times and are very lenient on banning trolls. So you will get a totally different experience on some servers as others. Unfortunately you often might not have a choice as there is typically 1-2 full servers at most.
  7. One of the most frustrating things for me with CMBN is the time of scenarios. I didn't know you could go into the editor and edit time lengths. The campaigns are a serious pain when the time constraints aren't generous. 40 minutes isnt near enough to take a good defense on. I got through all the campaigns (eventually) but its obnoxious when you are forced to rush so much when you've ran into defense 3 times the magnitude you were briefed on. There should be some leeway in a situation like that, most players don't have the battle IQ of say Patton. And its far too easy to feel you're doing something wrong and that the game is broken when you are supposed to do so much in so little of a time. I can't even imagine how bad i'd have done if I didn't pause profusely during campaigns. IMO, there should be extended scenario times if the player wants it, possibly for a slight loss in victory points. Or it could be extended for lower difficulty levels.
  8. 24 hours and no responses, highly unusual. Everyone else must be busy playing Santa:o I don't think you actually need the chain of command to be alive, you just need a radio near the mortars and a radio with spotter. It might help with timing or something but I never noticed a difference.
  9. Well.... You also have to consider the high intensity of Combat Mission combat missions.
  10. BF, can you buy Sega and use the Total War technology for hand to hand combat maybe? Thanks
  11. I'm not qualified to answer, but I would stay behind if its a human opponent. Actually I've never played a human, but even though the AI really sucks at using arty successfully, those free airbursts really hurt. In the trees would be the obvious place to set up and hopefully staying behind is enough to break up his line of sight so he can't spot arty on you successfully from afar as well as mitigate his ability to concentrate firepower on your guys. Maybe hide a bazooka/shrek team or two in there. Dunno about 2 tiles. With one its so little that you can see and shoot through it very well. I don't know about 2
  12. I'm the same way.... but is "real time" multiplayer WEGO an option? I thought it wasn't presently.
  13. Hey at least the coach didnt try to get in a fight with your coach
  14. Yeah those kind of contradict each other, don't you think? Yes. I did.
  15. Yeah keep up the good work BF, and ensure we have a refuge here away from crappy war games well into the future. Go 49ers
  16. I've had some luck with them. Are they pulling out their secondary when enemy vehicles are around? Because I havent had too much of a problem with them using their main weapon. If anything the biggest problem I've had is they run out of ammo and I need more rockets.
  17. Or just split a scout team from a squad and mount them up
  18. There's been a surge of activity in the last month and a half. Its only recently tapered down especially during the week with the release of CoD and BF all at the same time I'd imagine. Try it out on the weekend, I've got a server that has a weekend long event where NCO slots may be occupied with admins if I can get enough. Its work out okay the last month.
  19. The AI in quick battles I find horrendous. Then again I wouldn't expect it to be so great. It seems compared to CMx1 though its a lot worse probably due to the 1:1 representation. Basically I can use 2 platoons to wipe out 2 enemy battalions without armor. In boccage country they simply file through holes/breaks in the bocage in my general direction. I've tried to see how many enemy I can take on while defending and I've already reached up to a small battle with the enemy having +150% (or whatever max is) bonus points. Soon I guess i'll try only purchasing a platoon or giving the AI more artillery/armor. Half the time the enemy drops the arty on themself so I'm not sure that'll help it. I also managed to turn the battle in which a lone US company defends a small village into a massacre on the attackers with only moderate casualties mostly to outlying units.
  20. Games fail for a variety of reasons and success and failure I think have less to do with what people assume they do. Look at Minecraft, horrible graphics but innovative gameplay. I used to be a big Civil War buff and Mad Minute's Bull Run game was excellent. Little things like hearing water running and cicadas or crickets when zoomed in can make the terrain seem less bland. BF could take lessons from the ambient noise just in the terrain from it. It was along the lines of Sid Meier's Gettysburg but a little more visually appealing.
  21. Yeah its adequate... if you have the manual right in front of you. The way game distribution is going, most people are gonna play off the digital copy long before they get the hard copy in the mail. From what I understand the manual numbers are only avail why supplies lasts???? When I was doing the tutorial I had to keep minimizing to go to my PDF manual. An in-game manual ... think of Civilization's Civopedia would be very helpful. This Another illustration of a clear lack of Battlefront-sponsored multiplayer. Well just catering to players like you is going to leave CM futureless. Nobody my age or younger will Play by e-mail. Its not going to happen. Probably a tenth of a percent would even consider the concept. Most people my age don't even use e-mail. Play by facebook? Well you might have something there in all seriousness. I'm guessing this game doesn't even have a Facebook page. I think its outstanding that this game has as many dedicated fans as it does... but the same type of people who were drawn to this game in the last 10 years are not going to be drawn to this game in the future no matter where their interests lie. You can improve this game with every new release but eventually time is going to pass it by if it requires a player really want to have the experience the game offers. A great game design brings new players, it doesn't just cater to the old guard who put their time in already. Nobody wants the gameplay altered, I don't understand why people would fight to keep this game in a lower tier just over some shoddy UI decisions. A lot of people appreciate the ultra realism and challenge of facing opponents in realistic circumstances.... the same type of people aren't going to be attracted to a game that makes this hard to do outside of the already challenging gameplay. Another indie company, Mad Minute Games, made some Civil War strategy games where you could turn on/off an AI that would help you with manage up to entire Divisions and give them generalized orders to help with the madness Naturally nobody who wants to win would leave such things up to the AI but that could really help new players and also make large battles a reality again if WeGo isnt going to be avail for IP play again.
  22. I don't really see how you can argue the point that the lack of a decent tutorial and a super simplified interface isn't drifting a lot of players away. It is. There's no way to argue it. The demo has the tutorial right? It's been about 6 months since I played the demo but it was overly confusing. And I'm a vet of CMx1. People don't read out of a manual unless they already like a game. Sad, but things change. I have fond memories of reading through game manuals front to back for insights. There's almost no strategy games like CM that don't have a tutorial. The only decent one I can think of is Hearts of Iron but IIRC the new one even has a decent tutorial. It certainly has text in pop up windows to help you along. I'm not unhappy with the game. TBH I'm a little disappointed just in terms of the multiplayer. WeGo or a pause button is sorely needed. An ideal scenerio IMO which would open up this game to new / not necessary niche players would be: -An interactive tutorial to help players get used to UI. -In-game multiplayer matching system -Simplified UI All of these obviously showing for the demo. Even a multiplayer matching system for battle included with the demo... BF2 had playable multiplayer in the demo for one map and it very much made the game more excitable. If it matters that BF2 is the example, I'm using then you have a problem. They're both games, the concept works and makes people want more content. Every consecutive version of CM that comes out, the player base isn't going to get much bigger if you're making a game from the past which only 40 year old authors want to play. I like the game, even with the clunky UI. I'm worried that the player base is never going to expand and just move on to new things. Whose gonna make anything else like CM? Then there won't even be a realistic war game I can play out there. That'd really suck. That's why it disappoints me. You can't tell me you can't simplify the UI. I know BF seems to be concerned mainly about gameplay. But guess what... it's not all there is to a game. It comes across as a little disconcerting that BF could take some lessons from a crap game like CoH in terms of simplicity. Nobody expects that much simplicity, but the more the better without compromising gameplay and options. You should reasonably be able to do limited hotkeys and switches to other panels to get something done. Personally I think half the people who claim it doesn't matter around here prefer this to be a niche game and keep all the common ruffians away. Because this is about the most sophisticated game community I've ever encountered by far. But the same type of people who love this game now... 10 years from now those type of 40 year old authors and sophisticated people are gonna cringe at this type of game if continues to avoid advancing other things besides the game engine. Because they'll have never played anything that was so overly complicated to get into. Summary: They don't have hand cranks on car's anymore for a reason. I'm sure some people resented those changes too.
  23. ....no they don't. You don't have to download mods for most games. Not like in CM where there's a small community of fanatics and an active modding community. Most people don't just play one or 2 or 3 games. There's been a dramatic shift in the last 5 years even of how much people spread their gaming time between games. People don't focus on one or 2 games and mod them like that. At least outside here. And I sure don't
  24. Even Civ V you can load up and find opponents now fairly easily. Fighting the AI is maybe 1/4th as fullfilling as taking on real players with... you know brains. And I like this game and have probably logged 100 hours on it, gone through all the campaigns but never played a human which is something i'd like to do. But without even a chat to meet up at... I'm not gonna revolve my day around getting a game going. Half the forums nowadays have a simple chat feature at least. It was easier to find opponents real time in CM1 before the unofficial chat room closed down on whichever site it was.
  25. Yeah it deserves better. Maybe some of the expansions will rate better. If anybodys reading... as somebody who I don't think would typically love this game and I wrote a short paper on this game for a video game industry class... CMBN has shortcomings. An interactive tutorial is essential for a game as unique as CM. The sound effects that came with the release IMO are largely sub par... they're largely just the old sound effects from CM... you shouldn't have to download somebodies sound mod to get decent sound effects. Another free game I have has better sound effects for the MG42. Also the lack of a convenient player-matching system is a real problem. These are things gamers expect. I know BF doesn't isn't making 100 million dollar games but you're only gonna cater to a niche if you can't offer some of the simple conveniences to complement CM's excellent gameplay. There shouldn't be people on the forums asking about where they can play H2H... that doesn't settle well with any gamers nowadays no matter what genre you're into.
