  1. @ BFC "Sometimes game company needs and game customer needs don't neatly overlap." Thus, financial loss. That's the beauty of capitalism. Let's not forget 'natural selection' applies to marketing concepts as well... @ Dinger "So sorry, that's arrogance...But expressing an attitude where oll of our patronage of your past and future products means that we are dependent on you for your superior wisdom comes across as pompous and prideful." Well said. Over the years, many game developers have developed such an attitude; "Screw you all, it's our game and our sandbox. Go play somewhere else!" ..,and people have! Making changes and going in a different direction is admirable; but when the corporate attack dogs are unleashed to subjugate any relevant criticism and/or skepticism to such ideas, it then becomes painfully evident that a lack of confidence and general insecurity does exist. Question is, why does this defensiveness manifest itself so frequently and intensively in their posts?
  2. @ Mord "You are both being hypocritical...it's okay to play wargames where people were killed and maimed and blown to crap just as long as it was set twenty or thirty or sixty years ago?" The issue has nothing to do with death and how people are killed. You're right, that's simply the nature of warfare. The American military has much to be proud of, but some games glorifying the US Army/USMC are taking it a little too far (ie First to Fight, Kuma War, et al). Games based on the venerable WW2 setting (or any other *historical* setting) are popular because they are neutral in that regard. History has painted a clear picture of the victor and the defeated, and the ramifications of alternate endings. Playing a historical strategy game often maintains a clear focus on the 'good' and 'bad' guys, given the historical retrospect. The subtle point being made is that simulating current military conflicts is not only politically tasteless and serves to shamelessly inflate the national ego, but that there is an expectaion that we're supposed to sit back in the comfort of our homes and enjoy playing out current events on our PCs, as our friends and neighbors are getting killed everyday in such a conflict. How many people here would buy 'Katrina 2005:The Game'? BFC has cleverly sidestepped most of the potential political fallout by creating a scenario that is in the "near future". Throw in the noble rationalization that it will be sold to world militaries as a training tool, and one is left with a program that isn't really a 'game', much less art.
  3. Good original post. However, I remain perplexed. Does the Syrian army realistically hope to contend with the US forces by fielding a couple hundred 1:72 scale T-55s?
  4. Disappointed, yes. But open-minded enough to play the demo and possible buy it!
  5. Suicide bombers? Cool! Will there also be civilians and non-combatants available for slaughter, beheading, and torture? er...Syrian Army; will it put up a good fight? Sigh...did someone say 'turkey shoot'? @ FFE I agree. Too political for me as well. Modern warfare sims border on propoganda and patriotic backslapping.
  6. I think its great they're doing something different, although I detest playing a 'near future' (aka Sci-Fi) combat game; especially in the Middle East. Whats with this 'near future' BS anyway? Close Combat developers seemed to have jumped on this bandwagon a while back when announcing CC6 will be 'Red Phoenix'...basically NATO vs North Korea..."in the near future". Have to agree with Tom tho...at least the WW2 title will arrive after the marketing fodder is absorbed and lessons are learned from the first title. GO BFC!!!
  7. Good post LH! I've READ several accounts (as many others here have) of Soviet tanks used as ramming weapons vs other tanks (Kursk), or simply to crush dug-in MG/ATG emplacements. Interestingly, Coox's 'Nomonhan' details the events of Soviet tank brigades actively using BTs to crush entrenched infantry during night fighting, as well as overruning medical tents full of wounded and incapicated soldiers. Ouch!
  8. @ undead reindeer cavalry "2nd module: Aunus Expedition 1919" Does this involve an operational thrust deep into the rear of the enemy? Sorry, couldn't pass it up... Doh!
  9. What always frustrated me was the lack of effectiveness of 'tank hunters'; especially when asssaulting open-topped vehicles like halftracks. They would sit there and toss grenades, yet never destroy the target. Even worse for some of the Allied teams lying in ambush on the side of the road in a foxhole or trench. They hopelessly lob multiple grenades at German hafltracks to no avail.
  10. BoB was consistently hinted at in the FAQ post a while back. How can you go wrong with ETO-WW2? It sells.
  11. Thanks for the update! Perfect timing, as I had been wondering about CMX2 as of late, and managed to check back in this forum for the latest news. Although you've implied that the theater hasn't been selected yet, I don't see how you could go wrong with WW2...whether it be ETO, PTO, or Africa. I'm so burned out on the recent trend of portraying contemporary conflicts in pc games. Keep up the good work!
  12. @ Sergei No, a grog's dream (or nightmare) features "perfect" physics, and then the OTHER grogs come in to nag about how flawed it actually is. Perhaps that's why traditional wargaming will always be a niche, and never financially successful in the popular market. Not that it needs to be, mind you. Grogs are quite the whining lot. But then again, how else would their games improve and thus flourish?
  13. @ flamingknives A Baldur's Gate fan, eh? re: 200 posts...if you perceive that as a brag, sorry to make you feel threatened. I know the 5000+ post mark means a lot to you, but heh, its not a pissing contest...is it?
  14. @ Salt Any real CM player would know you don't get penetration messages from soft vehicles. (sigh) It was a DREAM. Geez, please don't tell me grognard's dreams come with a rigidly accurate physics model... @ Simonds Boyfirend, schmoyfriend...I think she was a dyke! @ Sergei Dreams are never logical! No 'treatment', as they are natural manifestations of conscious anxiety, wishes, hopes, and fears. As for being new to CM...no, Ive been around a long time. Had to change from my former ID (w/over 200 posts) due to the friggin password being lost. I haven't posted in a few years. @ Talorgan No, she wanted to play without 'extreme weather effects'... Good to see you from the CSO forums! [ February 06, 2005, 02:27 PM: Message edited by: Overman_XXX ]
  15. I've been playing CM ever since 'Beyond Overlord'...but I must admit I had my first CM dream the other night. A beautiful woman walks into my room. I am playing CM, but I stop and give her my full attention. We talk for a bit, and one thing leads to another. Then, for whatever reason, she abruptly gets annoyed and leaves. She gets into her car, which strangely enough looks like a Kubelwagen, and starts to drive off. Suddenly I'm standing next to a 25 pounder, and I yell 'Fire!'. Her tiny car immediately blows up, sending her voluptuous body into the air. Bright green text flashes in the sky: LOWER HULL PENETRATION KNOCKED OUT! I cheer and congratulate my crew... sick, huh?
