  1. I know that the times I've played against others, I fear aircraft enough to always justify the purchases of some AA assets. I think it's a less difficult decision to make because it's not a waste, even if no fighter bombers show up. Those quad-20's can work wonders on alot of ground based targets as well, as some of my infantry dashing across a street covered by those AA assets found out the hard way. Ouch. I can't speak for others, but I think what makes aircraft feared/tempting for me is that they have a chance to do some serious damage if the situation turns out right. Sure, you can suffer friendly fire, like having a Stuka drop his bombs on your own tanks (my PZ II's never even got a shot off), or they can get shot down quick if you're unlucky and effectively be a waste of points, but at the same time they can make life miserable for your enemy if they disable/destroy some important asset he's relying on. Getting a bomb where you least wanted it, such as your own guys, definetely sucks. But at least you know that flyboy is up there somewhere and going to take a shot at it sooner or later, so you can try to plan for it. If you're lucky, your opponent won't realize until it's too late to scatter and he gets one right in the middle of his troops.
  2. On the topic of Victory flags, I know there's been alot of talk and discussion on them beforehand, so I'm probably beating a dead horse. But I've found that while they're certainly likely to be the center of engagements, being the 'prize' you're fighting over and all, you can certainly grind out a victory by concentrating less on the flags (though don't forget about them entirely!) and more on inflicting casualties on your opponent. Twice I've managed to get a victory in a meeting engagement now by letting my opponent move in on the flag territory first simply because I had a better position and cover to shoot at it, thus causing him more losses and setting up for a sudden charge at the end, securing a single big flag and enough casualties for the win.
  3. Stoat, I used to do the same thing in armor vs armor engagements, figuring I'd try to keep the visual advantage over the enemy. Until I saw several times when my tank took a direct hit, and while it shrugged off the shot, I guess my TCs, sitting happily up in their hatch caught the business end of shrapnel from the failed shell. So now, once the big steel beasts start throwing shells at each other I tell my TC to get their heads down. I still find myself tempted to pop up every now and then though. Especially during a lull in the fighting when you know the enemy tank is there but you can't see him due to smoke or a line of trees he popped behind. So many times that first shot can be so important if you manage to land it. Sometimes it works for me. Sometimes I still send TCs home in pine boxes.
  4. From what I've seen the speed the vehicle is going at definetely plays a factor in the liklihood of it to bog down. Like with a tank going 'fast' across snow, in my experience, it's more often than not 'if' the tank will bog down, but when. When going off road the safer route is of course to keep your tanks moving more slowly, though it's still no guarantee they won't get stuck. Stick to roads where you can in bad terrain. As for pulling itself out after it -has- bogged down, I'm not sure on that part. I think it's just a case of whether the crew is able to work her loose or not but somebody more practiced in that can definetely say for sure.
  5. I agree that was an interesting read, whether you're a newbie or no I imagine. I see that it mentions a previous article concerning halftracks, is there any way to obtain that one too or was it unfortunately lost when the site went down?
  6. I took a look in the search topics but only found one other thread asking this question, and it kind of shifted off to discussion about how aircraft will often bomb your own units as well. Nobody seemed to answer the initial question though, and I'm curious myself. Does having a veteran fighter-bomber pose any difference as opposed to a green one? Has anybody done any tests in regards to this? I'm well aware from personal experience what can happen if the plane targets my own men, what I'm wondering though is what effect the experience level has on them. What am I supposed to be getting for those extra points?
  7. Just remembered another multiplayer match in BB with myself playing the russians. This didn't turn out against me in the end but I imagine my opponent was gnashing his teeth. Even if I lost it in the end. Meeting engagement again (I admit, I like ME battles), same kinda story as above. Our armored assets have at it as our infantry maneuver into place, except my tanks come out on the bad end very early on. My 1943 late model T-34's start getting taken apart by his tiger and a pair of Stugs. Eventually I manage to tag one of the Stugs but the tiger is of course the ever present problem. So I get the bright idea of using the hills and trying to circle around behind it in some dead ground and dispatch my two remaining T-34's to try and deal with it. En route, the tiger draws a bead on one of them and fires, scoring a gun hit and destroying the barrel. I didn't even know a T-34 could survive a hit from a Tiger until that point. Nevertheless by this things were startin to look pretty hopeless. I figured I was committed at this point. All or nothing, cause if I let that tiger run free I got serious problems. After a brief pause behind cover I send the gun damaged T-34 racing out first as a distraction, and sure enough he takes it, blowing it to smithereens. My other T-34 crested the hill some distance over a few seconds later and snarled past at full speed -right- behind the Tiger, while it was busy putting the finishing touches to it's squad mate. The russian ground to a stop at point-blank range behind the german heavy and the turret swung over. I've seen the T-34 crews often panic and run at the sight of a tiger or even any tank that could potentially kill them in one hit, but there was no running here. Guess they knew it was 'do or die' time. So the Russian tank commander did what I would do under the same circumstances. At that range, with that target, he used his one and only tungsten round. I had actually forgotten he was carrying any, and I was lucky, cause turns out the other one that got blown up hadn't been carrying any rounds himself. Good thing it was him who took the gun hit and not my other tank. So at a range of 50 meters, the tiger took a tungsten round right in the ass. I've seen alot of tanks explode from devastating hits but I didn't know it was possible for the big cats to do it too, from all the times I've beat them before they were always 'abandoned'. When that Tiger blew up like a roman candle there was something epic about it. Could almost hear the russian tank crew cheering as they achieved something heroic. A few seconds before the Stug finished turning around and put a shell into them. But I don't mind losing if I managed to achieve something cool in the meantime.
  8. Sgtgoody, all I can say is ow. That is exactly why if I have any armor I always get nervous on a map with 'deep snow'. I've had way too many tanks lost that way without even firing a shot. Though I did manage to do one quickbattle against a guy where I was assaulting. My armored forces included two groups of Stuarts on the offensive in deep snow (I also had two Shermans but didn't want them going off the roads). In the end only one Stuart bogged down and got stuck on me. Must be the light weight.
  9. There's probably been some 'worst moment' threads out there already, but I think I just experienced one of my own in a CMAK session I just had with someone. Meeting engagement, 1000 points set in Italy, July 1943. My opponent reached the flags first so I decided to try and slug it out with his infantry and mine at range first and see if I could soften him up before I pushed forward, since I had a cover advantage to do so. Meanwhile, our armored assets have at it, and I manage to come out on top at the end. Losing a halftrack and a panzer, but retaining one Panzer while he's lost two M10 motor gun carriages, one halftrack and another gun track pinned down by machinegun fire, unable to advance. So I begin my push, it's difficult, but my infantry's advancing. Slowly. I manage to get my remaining panzer to break through and circle around to box in and attack his infantry from the rear in the woods they're hiding in. That tank was set up to do some serious damage. Until en route, it bogged down, then became immobilized. In open ground. In very dry conditions. So it was that my poor infantry had to do it the old fashioned way, and with much heavier losses while the tank and her crew got comfortable and passed around a pack of cigarettes. I imagine there's people out there who've had much worse happen in unlikely scenarios?
  10. Given that he e-mailed me earlier this afternoon it seemed he was gone off to holidays. Thanksgiving and all that, for the Americans, so that would explain absense. But we'll see. As for marching all troops in a straight line. Why didn't I think of that?
  11. CMAK A huge open desert type map set in africa with a large town as the setting. We decided to go with maximum damage settings, so we were fighting over little more than a ruined city, with me playing the Germans and him as the British. Upon the beginning of the match, from what I can already see of his units, I see alot of infantry. I decide, allright, I can move into position before him in the city, which I have covered with some guns and several platoons of soldiers as well as three PanzerII's to move into the city with the troops. Battle commences. Pretty straightforward. My troops start moving from ruins to ruins, covered by the tanks. His infantry begin to advance. He reveals he has a couple of Valentine tanks, which are quickly kept busy by a lone gun I'd kept on a rise in the hopes of it causing some trouble before it got taken out. I forget how many turns into the battle it was, when I heard the drone of plane engines. Oh good! I thought. I'd purchased a fully loaded Stuka. Saw the silhouette move in and drop a bomb on one of his valentines. This made me think that was odd, because it wasn't much of an explosion and didn't seem to hurt the tank much (he later told me it had taken one crew casualty). Not thinking much of it, I continued on. Next turn, I hear -another- plane engine. "Oh good!" I think. "That must have been his own plane hitting his troops earlier. Now here comes MINE!" The Stuka, fully loaded down with bombs, swooped down like an avenging demon and unleashed it's payload. Right on my Panzer II's and the squads that were taking cover in the ruins near them to protect each other. After the battle my opponent confirmed that he -too- had purchased air cover and that was his own plane that had bombed his tank. So in a matter of two turns our planes apparently both decided to switch alleigances. One destroyed Panzer II later, another immobilized and easily half of the platoon wiped out. Sure it may not have been as costly as the losses some people have taken, but it kinda put a damper on my attempts to occupy the ruined city. ;P
  12. Being an Ontario resident myself, and not knowing what happened I find myself wondering what the government did this time...? Unless it's something personal or secret, in which case ignore me.
  13. I'm sure the infantry gun has already been discussed in depth, but the context of my post goes beyond just that as I'll outline below. First off, a bit background on my own experience so far as I've been learning through playing online. It's been in my experience that almost every player I've gone up against so far (I'm sure this dosen't apply for all) who takes Germans almost always seems to take the infamous 150mm Infantry gun. I admit at first I didn't know what was so special, until I tried it myself and realized the thing was blowing apart tanks with HE shells and the like, and for a relatively cheap price on top of it. To be truthful, at first I was discouraged. Especially when I got BB and started encountering it as I was getting used to the Russians while my T-34s were getting slaughtered by this HE chucking monster of a gun. At any rate, it was in a CMAK game in a small map with just infantry that I had a bit of a revelation that I'm sure any CMAK veteran would just consider common sense, but hey it was a new thought to me. Upon setup, I had a 105 mm howitzer for support, but I -knew- my opponent would no doubt pick up a 150 and pound the crap out of my guys. On a whim, I decided to hide my artillery piece (anyone would do that anyway I assume) but give it a controlled arc so it would not open fire right away even on enemy infantry came into view. I wanted it to just stay put and stay quiet for now. I started the session and, away we went. Sure enough, it wasn't long before I heard that familiar *BOOM* and one of my poor squads was introduced the hard way to the infantry gun, though thankfully they were in good cover and the platoon was spread out at the time, so while the squad was devastated from two direct hits, the rest of the group was fine. Sure enough, no sooner had the boom gone off that I got a definete contact in a certain group of trees on a rise on his side of the map. I knew he'd pick one of those spots to put it but had no way to know which he would choose initially as there were several. Sure the identifier just said 'Gun?' but it didn't take a genius to figure it out. Needless to say on the next round I ordered my Howitzer out of hiding and to fire on where I'd spotted the gun contact, which had now vanished. Two explosions later, my opponent suddenly messages me with a 'wtf did you knock that out with!?' which was supremely satisfying to say the least to know that I'd not only swatted an uber gun but pretty much wiped out his on field artillery in short order. So now I quit rambling and get to the actual -point- in my post. I know the 150 is considered overpowered by some. But now I'm starting to notice that for all it's strengths it seems to have some big weaknesses too. One of which is much like any other big gun, when it goes off it announces its presence to -everyone-, so you can start dropping something on it's head in short order to keep it busy. What this got me to thinking of though, is what are some other weapons that might be considered 'uber' in the game that a player might be tempted to try and overruse? And how to counter them? Or are there even any others? Someone was warning me about 76mm canister shot but I haven't seen what that involves yet.
  14. It was a quick battle. I didn't know that fanatics couldn't appear in QBs. If that's the case then these guys were probably just really lucky then.
  15. Something that I'll keep in mind is the part about retreating back further into the building, though yes I know that running out into the street to assault a tank at that range is putting the guys at unnecessary risk, it was a deliberate choice on my part. I did say this was to familiarize myself with the tactics against armor with just infantry, perhaps I should have worded it as I wanted to see the 'effects'. At the time I wasn't too concerned about losing an engineer squad in the interests of seeing the boom of a demolition charge on a vehicle, as I was still new to this part of the game. I wanted to see an explosion. I just didn't expect the chase that would result. But getting back to my initial curiosity, is whether or not the fact they took the blasts at point blank range and only got very temporarily 'shaken', even while taking two casualties in a short period of time, is it a sign of fanatics or were they just really lucky? The squad were Regulars as I recall. [ July 21, 2005, 05:46 AM: Message edited by: Wingmanx ]
  16. I know that the game occasionally has fanatics appear in it, and you don't know who or when they show up, and I'm not sure how to spot them other than noticing a squad that won't route or panic in the face of heavy fire (save flamethrowers of course). But I wasn't sure if this was a case of a random fanatic squad or just guys that really live a charmed existence. *** Basically, to get myself more familiar with anti-armor tactics -without- the use of ATGs, armor of my own, or otherwise, the setting was a large town, with german armor (supported by some infantry) moving in. My forces consisted of Canadian Engineers. At any rate, tactics consisted of hide, wait for the tanks to come close and ambush them. So, a Marder rolls up near one of the buildings I have a squad hiding in. So naturally, I order them to assault the gun, which they prepare to do. Only problem is, right before they go to attack, during the command delay, the Marder spots them. And though it's at point-blank range, immediately goes into reverse. The Engineers, being obedient little fellahs, dash out into the street to follow it, and my heart sank as I saw the Marder lowering it's gun in their direction as it reversed. The first blast, at a range about 20 meters or so hit just behind them. They got shaken, but amazingly took no casualties, so they kept chasing the gun. It fired a second and third time, both blasts inflicting one casualty, and both making the squad 'shaken' but the effect wore off quickly, and of course the crazy SOBs keep chasing the gun. At this point it ran out of room, backing into a building and coming to a halt, allowing the engineers to catch up and dispatch it with their demolition charges. All without once hitting the dirt during their run face on into danger. Fanatics or no, I wish I could give these guys medals either way. ;P
  17. And actually, I just found this. Veeery nice. http://www.alanhamby.com/cutaway.html
  18. After looking at those links, all I can say about Yacov's model is...holy crap. What I'd give to have something like that sitting on my shelf.
  19. I remember leafing through a book that my friend owned and seeing several cutaway views of several WWII tanks, I found this interesting since before that point I'd always had trouble envisioning where each person would sit in the vehicle, aside from the obvious positions for the commander and the driver which are often similar. I've ever seen a cutaway view of interior of a Tiger though and am curious if there's any images available out there that anyone knows about? I'm not looking specific, as any model will do.
  20. That's a shame. In Band of Brothers my favorite episodes were the ones that were about Bastogne and such, so I like re-creating the feel of fighting and bogging down in the snow and such. I just didn't want it always to have to be snowing for the ground to be covered.
  21. Even after having CMAK for awhile I still like to load up quick battles against the computer now and then for a simple fight. I particularly like doing winter battles, especially with armored vehicles. However I've noticed that with the map choices in the CMAK quick battle generator, it's sometimes difficult to end up with maps that have snow on them. Obviously the Africa based ones won't provide it, and Crete is limited only to a single month. In Italy, I can get snow if I choose for it to be snowing in the weather tab, but I would like to do some winter battles during clear days too if possible. Unfortunately even in the heart of 'winter' if I choose a clear day, I get a map that dosen't have snow on the ground. Is this unfortunately just a limit to the setting? Will I have to actually get my hands on Barbarossa to Berlin if I want the full experience? Or has anyone possibly modded it somehow? Just curious here.
  22. That's cool. Do you have ICQ or MSN messenger by any chance? If you're curious about anything else with the full game you can feel free to ask too. If you have either of the above, I can either be contacted at 6103686 for ICQ, or you can use t_tex11@hotmail.com for my MSN profile.
  23. Hey Terra, on an unrelated note, I got CMAK myself a little while ago but haven't had a chance to get into it multiplayer really. Preferably I'd like to learn with someone else that's pretty much new to the game as well...if you're interested, lemme know.
  24. Hmmm, I went and ordered a copy of CMAK a few weeks ago, and got an e-mail that they were out of stock and would get back to me in a short time when they would be able to send out a copy. Any idea on the status of whether they've managed to get more copies made or not? I've played the demo to death and wanna get with the real thing now.
  25. Yeah. I put my order in and I guess I'll only know when I get a look at the statement afterwards. Like someone said, suppose it depends on what kinda mood Customs is in. Oh well, I've been having alot of fun with the demo so it'll be worth it.
