  1. Typically I downsample all my games from 2880x1620 to 1080p, re-scaled on the GPU http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=509076

I couldn't get this to work in CM, by modifying the "display size.txt" . This is on a 4GB GTX680 using the September 327 series drivers.

An upgrade to the 331 series of Nvidia drivers has fixed this.

If you have got the GPU grunt, the effect in game is very nice.

For those to whom this seems gibberish, what I am doing is this:

My desktop is 1920 x 1080. This is the maximum my monitor supports.

The GPU is rendering the scene at 2880x1620, set in the display size.txt by using the values 2880 1620 60

The GPU then downscales this to 1920x1080, which results in crisper textures and improved anti aliasing.

Given the game tends to be CPU limited when it comes to FPS, the impact on frame rate is negligible.

I would like to see a couple of your CM screens as an example Jock

  2. The real issue with CM2 is the memory ceiling. Try playing the largest maps with plenty of buildings, flavour objects and with large number of forces on each side and with HD texture mods and community sound mods.

I can guarantee you will crash your game. I have certainly found the boundaries of mine - although that is due to some deliberation on my part to push the envelope.

Nevetheless, the problem is that CM is limited to 32 bit memory which is extremely restrictive. I propose that this problem will become more pronounced in the Eastern Front modules and generally as CM continues to develop/expand its content generally. My hope is that BF are already very well aware of this pressing issue and will produce a 64 bit version of the game that will circumvent the issue. Yes, a lot more work without clear profitable payback but in my view it's more important than the continuous content. 32 bit is living well beyond its shelf life generally in gaming already.

I was under the impression that they are working on a 64bit version already..well i hope so

  3. Sneak some info? You're making nice progress and those tanks are a real headache. For me its all about extracting as much blood as possible and dying heroically.

As the OP said concentrating firepower is the key-that cures 90% of the time and you have a big advantage in firepower.

Those paras though are bloody tough and their stens n brens can do some serious damage

  4. Actually I meant overall not just urban combat. I knew at setup I should not have placed the AT gun to cover the road, but did so anyway. I would have been better served placing it behing a building where it would be more survivable and capable of using enfilide fire.

I also just got through a series of turns in a non urban environment where we had a brutal, nasty fight in the woods. I had the defending positional advantage and thought I could easily handle what my opponent had, but he used a tactic that negated my advantage and nearly overran my position until I used his tactics againt him and stopped him cold. I watched the replays over and over and it was brutal. Fighting in wooded areas is probably as nasty as urban areas.

I'm sure we'll eventually see a Hurtgen Forrest battle that will probably turn some players off.

I was trying to sneak some info out of you db_zero..since we are in a battle right now :) I was hoping you would not realise it was me :P

  5. I bet that just like recipes, there are some secrets, tactics snd strategies out there that some don't share. I've discovered some things I'd rather not discuss and I'm pretty sure there are others.

I've also seen my oponents do some useful and interesting stuff that I'm more than happy to incorporate into my bag of tricks.

You could at least share one or two db_zero.

  6. I have remained silent on the whole movie mode topic. Partly because I wanted to give it a chance and partly because it seemed very popular and so why should I diss something that other like. But the normal colours - yes as in realistic - are the way I want to play the game.

I will now go on record as saying "I hate movie mode". Sorry it looks ridiculous and unnatural. Realistic mode is the only way to play.

Is that a bright enough beacon for ya:D

Hearing some of the descriptions people have written about realistic mode sounds to me like people are playing on uncalibrated monitors. Some factory defaults amp up the brightness and saturation because studies have shown that in the store customers buy the brightest monitors. As a photographer all my monitors are calibrated and when I look at CMBN set to a bright summer day and look outside my window on a bright summer day the game compares very well with real life.

I am with you on this topic :)

  7. Yeah, except no.

(and any other number of similar videos)

Smoke from vehicle fires does go up, but it also tends to create quite large LOS obstructions in the local area. But ... it's really flukey and variable. In the video above ground level LOS changes from completely blocked, to partially blocked to completely clear and then back again several times, depending on how intense the fire is and what the wind is doing. If you were behind or off to the flank of that motorhome, observing towards the other flank, the effect would be even more marked.

I'd like smoke from vehicle fires in CM to have a greater tactical effect, but I suspect that there are some other improvements that would have to come first and which could in turn be leveraged to improve the behaviour of smoke.

Thank you JonS, that is a good example of what I am talking about.
