  1. Schrullenhaft, THANKS!!! I finally got it working. I think there were two possible things that I might have done wrong: First, it offers me two drivers when I pick the .inf file from the install directory: just the SiS 741, and another that supports several SiS models. I think before I might have chosen the wrong one before switching to the plain SiS 741 version?? Maybe picking the other version first might have installed some portion of the utilities. Second, maybe the AGP driver was not after all correctly installed. I updated it again this time too. The long and short of it is, this time not only did I not get the SiS tabs in the display panel, which were not there before after the first couple tries, but I also did not get the SiS driver listed in the Add/Remove Programs. Before, even though I no longer had the SiS display properties tabs, I could still see it in Add/Remove Programs. Now it's all fixed, and I owe you a beer. It will be convenient to play on my desktop again sometimes So, anyone reading this, SiS 741 does seem to actually work ok if you get the procedure right to install the AGP and display drivers.
  2. Maybe I'm not doing this right... I tried again today, and here's what I did: 1. Removed sis driver/utilities from Add/Remove Program screen. 2. Removed SiS OEM1.INF and OEM5.INF and four other SiS*.inf files. I left the INF file for the AGP driver. I previously updated the AGP driver using the 364 sis driver package, without deleting INF files. 3. restarted my computer. The add new hardware dialog popped up and I browsed to the 364 driver XP directory and chose the 741 driver. I then restarted the computer. The OEMx.INF files were still gone when I checked. Unfortunately... it still didn't work. I must be doing something a bit different. I noticed that the driver still showed up on the add/remove programs listings. Does this mean that somehow the utilities got installed anyway? Also, I noticed there were two drivers in the directory - a 741 driver, and then one that seemed to support a whole host of models.
  3. Further clarification of above: I did NOT delete any .inf files, but the driver version is listed at .364 in the device manager. Frankly I'm nervous deleting .inf files from windows without knowing exactly which ones are the right ones... there's a lot of OEMx.inf files how do I know they are all SiS?
  4. Also, to clarify above, I didn't use the provided installer, I used the standard windows driver interface to search the directory "manually". The utilities did not load, just the driver this time.
  5. After reviewing the excellent progress made above, I decided to give my SIS741 another try. Here's what I did: 1. Downloaded the driver from the majorgeek.com link listed previously. 2. Uninstalled the current vga driver and rebooted 3. Used the windows installer to install the 3.64 version of the SiS 741 vga driver and rebooted Unfortunately the above procedure did not work... I also tried updating the AGP driver, although I have an onboard SiS 741GX chipset - it didn't help either (as expected). Any comments/tips?
  6. FYI, I was having trouble downloading from Schrullenhaft's link and found another that seems to give me better performance. http://file2.mydrivers.com/display/SiS_uvga3_364.zip The mydrivers site is also in chinese... hope this comes with some english docs. I hope I am able to have better luck than Leedsunited40. I'll report back if so.. not too much hope at this point I think. Buying a new $75 AGP card to support a $30 game is not an option for low-tech gamers like myself. I'll probably be ready to upgrade when CMx2 comes to be. I had no problems at all running on a 32mb ATI Rage before, was hoping to actually see some improvements on my new smokin' 64mb SiS integrated card Shoulda checked the forum before i bought!
  7. Schrullenhaft, thanks. Got it downloading, although I am normally a bit wary of downloads from a page where I can't understand a single character of the text How did you find this, and do you have any theories on why SiS would not have SiS's latest drivers???? Is this a beta driver?
  8. OK, I hope I can get some help now... I feel I have exhausted my options. I've tried the drivers from teh SiS site as well as download.com. They did not work. I can't find the drivers on Windows Update - it does not list them for me on the "hardware update" menu whether I have the latest SiS dirver installed, or the vanilla VGA driver you get when you uninstall the SiS driver. HELP! I hate running the program on my laptop - was much better on my 22" monitor And I'd really hate up have to downgrade to my old ATI 32mb AGP card just to run CMBB. If anyone has a SiS 741 driver that works send it over to powmark(at)yahoo.com
  9. The download.com drivers do not work, and in fact are not even for the 741 SiS. I tried windows update - it does not list hardware updates. I guess I will next try uninstalling the driver and then going to windows update.
  10. Well... like a fool I got it from the SiS site. I just noticed I wasn't supposed to do that. After MUCH searching microsoft update pages (isn't that site horrendous!!), I find that microsoft refers to DOWNLOAD.COM for the driver. So, if anyone else needs this help, I would go directly there rather than microsoft. I am now going to install what I get and see if it works! **Crossing my fingers**
  11. Also, FYI I'm trying to install CMBB (latest version).
  12. I can't help, but I can say I am having a very similar problem. I have a SiS K7S41GX AMD chipset with the onboard graphics and what I get is: The game loads fine, can see the setup, and load a PBEM game, but after I put in the password, I get a blank main screen with the image of the password window still present, with the lower control panel area still visible. Game still seems to run, but not display. I too have downloaded the very latest driver for the SiS 741 Display version 6.14.10.3631. I have even tried re-installing Direct X. Alt-Tab doesn't seem to resolve either - just results in bunch of "static" in the main window. Any further help for SiS would be much appreciated (and probably result in a CMAK purchase.) This is especially frustrating since it worked fine on my previous computer!!
