MG TOW reacted to BeondTheGrave in Any lessons from current Ukraine invasion mean anything to a 1982 Warsaw Pact attack?
The classic Commissar was first created during the Revolution. At that time, the Red Army had to pivot from urban militias to a true field force. As a result they needed to rely on a number of 'Spets' or specialists who were largely, though not entirely, members of the old Imperial army. The Bolsheviks being who they were had a hard time trusting the 'Spets' with military forces, so Trotsky introduced the Commissars as a emergency backstop against disloyalty or anti-Marxist behavior. After that the two other main periods of commissar activity were doing the two major crises of the Red Army: the purges and the early stages of WWII. In both cases the political arm (Stalin) distrusted the military and wanted a control to ensure compliance with orders and as a guard against disloyalty. One of the big changes of the mid-war was that the Commissars retreated from having an active and equal role in command towards more traditional political officers.
AFAIK by the 1980s the Commissars/Political officers took on more of the role of chaplains in the western armies. They worked to maintain consciousness, ideological purity, and sustain positive morale. As a chaplain might sustain you through combat spiritually, the politkom sustains the Soviet soldier politically. At least this is how the FM 100-2 series portrays them.

MG TOW reacted to transporter in Another 10 minutes of play
When the "Victory" page is displayed instead of merely having the choice to view the map or end the game, how about another choice of "10 more minutes" You could play to the last man if wanted or perhaps figure out a way to pull victory from the jaws of defeat. Granted you could continue to press 10 more minutes many times but eventually you would end the game. PS. to be fair don't view the map before extending the game.

You can't talk 1980 music without mentioning the Sinking Ships. Can't believe I'm the first.

Well it has a Soviet flag, Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, and artillery firing in Grenada. Plus its a great song for the cold war.

MG TOW reacted to umlaut in Troop Facade British ammo exchange -- How the...?
This is strange. I have just tried myself - without any problems at all: Every unit I place in any jeep is able to acquire ammo from that jeep. I guess something is wrong with your game.
It is a bit laborious indeed. My guess is, that it works this way because when you have to place a unit inside a jeep to acquire, then you are completely sure where you are acquiring the ammo from. If you only had to place them next to each other, then you might accidentally acquire ammo from the wrong adjacent unit. But that is just my guess.

MG TOW got a reaction from Flibby in Trying to use real world tactics
Hopefully a platoon assault like your example would not take place unless all the information in the form of a SME order was available. If possible. Perhaps scouts already ascertained what you are up against. What's covering the enemy MG. And then the scenario starts. CM does that pretty good, you can detach the platoon MMG, set up a fire base and hook in with the rest of the platoon as you said. Hopefully you have all the useful information to read prior to battle.
That basic text book tactic is taught to infantry section commanders as well, so they have a fundamental understanding, and perhaps a qualification to control fire and movement at a higher level. Applying it to CM depends on the scenario, sometimes you get a text book operation, other times you get a wtf situation with duff intel requiring some adaptive thinking.

Thanks, I might give it a go. A Scanner Darkly wasn't too bad once I got past that come to think of it.

MG TOW reacted to rocketman in Exciting news about Battlefront and Slitherine
Yup! The perfect showcase for what kind of situations the game series can produce. And the turn based intensity. Remember when I saw it and truly understood the cinematic capability of the game. Always wondered why more were not made to launch other titles/modules.
It was for FI and not GL as I states above.

MG TOW got a reaction from USNRM3 in Best Combat Mission game to start with?
Tough question to answer. The one not to start with is easier to answer imho. Don't start with black Sea. I find it unique to the other titles that are ww2 based. My opinion is Italy, or red thunder is a good place to start because they are my favourites.

MG TOW got a reaction from Warts 'n' all in How accurate are Kriegsmarine ranks?
Actually Kriegsmarine battalion commander in game is Kapitänleutnant by all appearance, not Ensign according to UI.
