My view is use them according to advantages they offer:

- Good transports,

- Cover fire to advancing troops (100 - 200 meters behind troops)

- lots of ammo

From my experience:

- read the map

- find ways of advance / defence

- create zones of fire (in defence assisting with Anti tanks)

- support tanks with infantry

- Keep the tanks close together so they have overlapping fire

- Always have a reserve

[Could Germany have lost alone?]

So many replies but so few based on time and geography.

The first key question is: Let's suppose that Germany never went to save Mussolini in the Balkans and Libya... In that case, could Germany have lost the war?

IF Germany did not lose precious weeks to attack Balkans (Yugoslavia and Greece down to Crete) would most probably have won the war!

Almost everybody seems to forget that operation Barbarossa was postponed due to the Balkans campaign and to Greek resistance. That resulted in Germans arriving to Moscow to late with very bad weather conditions (snow and freeze temparatures) so they did not capture Moscow although they almost entered the city.

The weather was so bad that in November in some cases the only effective weapon was hand grenades!

SO IF Germans have not attacked south they would have arrived in Moscow early in summer and Moscow and Stalin kaput.

[Could have Germany won?]

Definetely yes they could have won the war since:

- no streching in two many fronts

- control of oil resources

- new rute for advance in USSR (if after winning attacked Caucasus from South and from West)

- straggle Britain from colonies

Supressive fire from other units is a must to my opinion. Smoke helps but is not the only answer.

Most of all I would try to supress with area fire the opponent. Area fire form other troops not advancing (1st squad advances, 2nd fires not moving), MGs area fire as well to suppress, artillery is ok but needs time and does not offer much vs a well trenched position in woods.

PS. In case you can spare some tanks even better to suppress with area fire.

CMBB is a must buy probably the best ever game of its type.

[Taking out tanks]

Hide hide hide. Attack the last moment from closest range of weapon available. Especially from rear you have higher chances either to imobilise the tank or to destroy it. If infantry does not have panzerfausts check for explosives availability.
