  1. Thanks a bunch! Turns out that it was much easier than I had thought as I had the 10 gig pack of everything. The menu displays are still oddly sized - this on a laptop, so different PC than before. Perhaps a windows 10 issue? Would anyone know if that may be a problem? Also, I seem to recall that you could replace the standard textures with higher res ones with CM v1, is that still a thing? If so, is there a nice one that I could grab? Both PC's that I'm using are i7's so I don't think computer power would be an issue.
  2. So, this probably has been covered somewhere but I can't find it so I'll just ask. I have CM normandy v1 from way back. I then bought v3 a few years ago, but didn't install it (I forget why). That's not entirely true, as when you go to update it it says that you must already have 3.11 installed, which is confusing and makes me think something's wrong. Plus I have an ultrawide monitor and the menu screens are all tiny and hard to read. I'm guessing that I've done something wrong. If someone could tell me from square one how to get the program up and running, that'd be appreciated. If there's any graphics mods/packs I should grab and install, let me know about those as well.
  3. They did. Didn't you see the wood bracing holding up the contraption in the truck? Unfortunately you can't tell if the turret still traverses or if it's fixed. Wonder what would happen if it does traverse and they fired it 180 degrees off the line of travel of the truck? Wonder how fast the shocks wear out on that thing lol.
  4. Uncertian, but hiding units will frequently have crap LOS. Basically they can't see anything hugging the dirt, you have to unhide them in order for them to actually see. And if the unit is under fire hugging dirt, I'd assume you have the same LOS as hiding. I think this is a factor on what's going on. What I don't understand is when I go down with the camera to have a look at the LOS myself, find that it's fine, then when a unit gets there I basically find I have nothing. That's annoying.
  5. Back to the OP, the consensus is that I'm SOL? Because it would appear from the info that I put in the OP that the final patched version is available for download from the servers here, if you only knew the right login to allow access. Which I don't. I'd sure like to get hands on it if possible, you'd think someone would likely know the answer to what you need to do to allow access.
  6. Well, it was now 14 years ago My memory is no longer exact. Still a fun game though. I'd love to see it made again, w/ 3d graphics a la combat mission. Combat mission air war as it were heh.
  7. Need some help with a game. Everyone please all aboard the waaay back machine. In 1997 there was a game released - and IIRC distributed - by battlefront called achtung spitfire, by avalon hill. Now just so happened the other day I was digging through my closet and I ran across the disk (I tend not to throw anything away, yeah I'm one of those guys). Got me remembering how much I dug it when I had like win 98 on my PC. Anyway I did a google search on it, sure enough there are download links for it. Cool might as well give it a try. This is where my annoyance begins. First the game runs, which is good. Problem is, it's version 1.00. There are links to the 1.05 patch, but they won't run on my windows 7 machine (which is just odd to me). There are links to download the entire 1.05 game on places like CNET but if you attempt to use them, they ask for a login, username and password from: "Enter username and password for ftp://ftp.battlefront.com" I tried my forum login, but no luck. Any ideas? Original version of game has some minor bugs which are annoying, but most of all the AI is able to disengage very easily from fights, which was fixed in later patch. Would like to download the 1.05 version, but need some assistance in this area ofc.
  8. Question: As a new player of CM, what is the best way to start learning the game? What I mean by this is beyond what comes in the box. The AI is of course simplistic. I've found that the best way to learn a game is to play against good competition (IE: humans) and learn from them. What's the best way to do that? Along with that, what are the best mods for the game, and how do you install them?
  9. My problem with air support is that as noted the aircraft have a persistant habit of attacking your own troops. This happens so often that I think it, while maybe not a bug, is at least a poorly designed feature. If aircraft actually attacked the wrong side this often they would have never been used for close support of troops. I think the reasons for this problem have to do with the fact that many of the meathods for direction of CAS are not implimented in the game. It might be true if the aircraft is sent into the combat area with no contact with the ground or any direction whatsoever that you could see results like this. However, this is where foward air controllers come in, panels on the ground, direction that "beyond this point everyone is the enemy", etc. What exists now is IMO identical to undirected artillery fire. Perhaps someone could shine a light on this subject with the manner of air control used by the warring powers in WW2? I did once read Hans Ulrich Rudel's account of WW2 but that was some time ago, and I don't really want to read it again to hear about German CAS procedures . Again it seems to me that this feature isn't as well designed as it could be.
