  1. Steve,

Ref your #225, I don't see beaten broken soldiers on/in the AFVs and trucks (one truckload of infantry even has two war dogs). I do see some battered infantry on foot, but from what can tell,  every man still has his rifle, and I see lots of guys, most, in body armor. For a force that reportedly abandoned its heavy equipment, I see a lot, including tanks, BMP-1 and 2, Grad, towed 152 gun howitzers, 152 mm SPA, ACRV, box bodied command vehicles, one towing its HQ protection, a ZU-23. Was beginning to wonder where the casualties were, which is about when the ambulances appeared, followed by a very real example of walking wounded, non-ambulatory wounded, and shrouded corpses. Unlike the US government, the Ukraine government dares to show the ugly face of war to its people, and what would be the odds we'd ever be allowed to see unfettered criticism by the troops of higher command? The men don't appear hangdog and radiating defeat. To the contrary, I'd say they're pretty cheery on balance and have good morale.

    Schmoly War,

If that's the trailer, I can but imagine how devastating the actual program will be. Wow!

    Regards,

    Its live.

The putinbots are going ape**** in the comments.

  2. How much credence do you give this "interview"? Initially I thought he was captured and debriefed under pressure, but it seems he is actually making it on ukrainian television.

When someone is open about "HQ and troops lived in separate realities" I tend to believe them. The "black as negroes" comment im not sure about, if he is making fun of the rumour or actually trying to confirm it.

  3. Yes, sure it's evil russians bombing  Donetsk for several months already almost daily while Ukranian army has nothing to do with it. Ask Psaki about it, she will tell you the truth.

Yeah I dont buy it either of course, but Im curious to why the ukranians would even attempt to put such lofty claims forward. Do they draw exanples from other events?

They pretty much lied or misrepresented what was going on the airport. We're not talking about a tactical retreat here. I think their bloggers and news people need a reality check.

  4. From the OSCE Observer mission site (latest 21 January report)

"A Ukrainian soldier in a hospital in government-controlled Konstantinovka (56km north of Donetsk) told the SMM that he was being treated for injuries sustained at the Donetsk airport on 19 January. He said 80 Ukrainian soldiers in total had suffered the same injuries, manifested in uncontrollable muscle spasms, vomiting and difficult breathing. Some, he said, had become unconscious. Eleven of the soldiers had been transferred to a hospital in Dnepropetrovsk, he said."

The symptoms look suspiciously like a chemical agent weapon of some sort was used in Donetsk airport, more so when some 80 soldiers get the same symptoms more or less the same time.   This, if true, could mean a significant change in the conflict with potential larger ramifications if found to be true.

I really hope this is not the case because the ramification of chemical weapons being used potentially can throw all previous political and military assumptions out the door.

I am surprised there are not more cases of this since the battlefield is usually full of residual smoke and dust. There is also a video from last year where the separatists were clearing out a terminal throwing grenades into cellars and covering up the holes.

  5. @ Steve in regards to demonstrations.

This is a subject of faith and point of view as much as any other spread by media. Ukrainian media and their stories have known to be grossly skewed and outright fabricated, so how much is really happened is unknown. You could say the same about Russian media as well, which wouldn't be untrue. However, what baffles me is that people chose to believe one, or another instead of discontinuing both altogether.

Exactly. The mindset and culture of reporting from both the ukrainian army and the separatists cannot be that different. After all, they are from the same region! There is little to no critical, skeptical or independent reporting from these people. The more nationalistic and patriotic someone is, the less I tend to believe them, and lets be honest, the area is litted with tribalism, religious fervour and hooliganism.

Any side that uses artillery in its own country like Ukraine does to its cities, cannot have a healthy military leadership with psychological stability or understanding of human nature. That goes for all sides of course.

That type of sickness also has to spread into their news reporting and make all kinds of biases and lies grow.

It shouldn't take much analysis to realise that there isnt any mass assaults going on at the airport where dozens are dying in artillery crossfire. People are sniping each other with rifles, tanks and artillery and reporting that as attacks that keep failing, for propaganda or blatant misrepresentation purposes.

Some truth comes out of course, its not all lies.

  6. Ive been watching a number of videos from both sides now and the potential propaganda misuse is inevitable.

The crux for me seems to be that both sides claim that the OTHER side is ATTACKING and failing, when they most likely are all dug in and just taking potshots  at each other.

The incessant claim of rebels storming and dying en masse I value little, as to me it seems most of the same characters pop up in the Motorola and Gily units, video after video, week after week.

It would make sense to me that any participating russian unit would engage outside the airport itself, as getting wounded and trapped there would be too much of a propaganda prize for the ukrainians.

  7. Oh, there is this video that was uploaded today from the Ukrainian side. It shows "Cyborgs" playing soccer on the 1st floor of the terminal:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyzkUcjW5qU

Reports came in during the fighting that the separatists were using chemical weapons and/or tear gas. It turned out they were simply laying down smoke so they could withdraw with their wounded.
