  1. Sweet, my post spawned another.... I haven't gotten over 100 for a squad. I know i've seen 31 ICs for a single squad, and i remember one of my Soviet infantry platoons pretty much gutted at least a reinforced German rifle company; it was in that mission where the Russians are defending a hill, and there're trees around the border...well, one of my squads showed up at the edge, and i just decided to have them go one way, instead of reinforcing my hilltop position, and they got into a horrid firefight in the forest. As for single squad, the best i can remember is 31, like i said. Now, i'm wondering for the absurdly high ones, how often that squad fired on low ammo....
  2. Greetings, all. It's been a long time since I posted on here. Anyways. Last night, i just played the "Brits at Anzio" map, and my off-map artillery had a damn good showing. I waited until they were 100-150 meters away from the first line of platoons, and opened up with the platoons. That stopped the Germans in their tracks, and while they were slugging it out with them, i ordered my two 25pdrs to target wide, and let them pound away. A little while later, i ordered my mortar observer (81mm?) to hammer another area. At the end of the battle, i saw that one of the 25pdr obervers caused 43 infantry casulties, another caused 42, and the mortar oberver caused 23 infantry casulties. Each one knocked out some mortars as well. So, what's your best showing for your off-map artillery? I ask 'cause usally mine does nothing.
  3. I dunno. I'm not sure how the Tiger measured up, but i'm not a fan of the Tiger IIs. Best tank.....not quite sure.
  4. Yeah, i find that SMG squads are lethal in forest fights, due to the disgusting amount of firepower they can put out at short range. Usually, though, i end up assaulting the enemies.... Oh, i think an infantry platoon's mortars are damn near useless in forests. Even the 60mm ones have that 60m minimum range or whatever, which means that even if you send them as far back as possible while still remaining in command range of the HQ, the bad guys will be just SLIGHTLY too close.
  5. Whoever said BGII was one of the greatist RPGs ever is right. I blew like a year of my life on that game. I haven't played Planescape: Torment, but after the dissapointment that was the Temple of Elemental Evil, i might see if i can find a copy. Rome: Total War will be my next addiction. Fall semester of next year i will get NO work done, because i'll be conquering the Roman Empire (bwa ha ha ha ha!) Recently, i've been playing Robin Hood: The Legand of Sherwood. It's Robin Hood with the Commandoes style. Good game. However, i do need to get another game. Any suggestions?
  6. While on the (off-)topic of flying rodents, i believe there was a project called Project X, where frozen bats (not ice-cold, but cold till they sleep) fitted with ignition caps were dropped from B-29s and other high-altitude bombers. As they went down, they thawed. The plan was to have them roost in Japanese buildings, and the caps would go off, and set fires. The project didn't work as anticipated, though, and it was canceled. Now, killing Tiger IIs: yeah, they're tough. One time i tried to do an attack over a ridge against some Panthers and some Tiger IIs with like a company of Su-152s, and most of them died. It sucked.
  7. Well, my "underdog" story is as follows: I was playing a mission where i was defending a hilltop, and i had reinforcements (a regular rifle platoon, IIRC). I forgot about them for two turns, and then found them. Instead of moving them to my hilltop, i decided, on a lark, to move them along a forest to secure the other side of the map. So, they're walking in some nice autumn forests, when suddenly, they see Germans. My response: Ok, isolated Germans versus a platoon. Let's go. So, i started to maneuver, suppress, and assault. I killed one squad, two squads, three squads...... And then i realized that the difference between the squads i killed weren't just their place in the platoon; also, WHICH platoon they were in, and which COMPANY. By the end of the battle, that one platoon had gutted an infantry company. They did manage to bypass my platoon, but when they attacked my main force, they got cut up. I totaled it up: That one platoon cause well over 80 casulties, while losing....20 men, i believe?
  8. DU is pyrophoric; if you put a lot of pressure on it, it'll catch fire and shoot pieces of it around and all that. So, once the sabot penetrates, little flaming pieces fly off and bounce around the inside of the tank and roast everyone in it.
  9. Oh, darn, what was it....something about the Spanish Civil War, and Germany giving Franco BF-109s and PzIs and -IIs..... </sarcasm> It's not that unlikely. I am not a fan of China, so i wouldn't put it past them to be testing new thingies in Iraq.
  10. I'd just like to give one of my expierences with Cocktails (and the only one i can remember now) I had a squad on the upper floor of a building, with an open-topped German assault gun below them (forget the designation). I'm sitting here rubbing my hands in glee thinking of a result like in Saving Private Ryan (the MC cooks off the ammo and the tank obliderates itself). All three MCs do nothing. I'm dumbfounded, but then the thing gets immobalized by a grenade tossed by a squad a few meters away on the ground. Next turn (and several grenades later) the vehicle explodes.
  11. Well, in the Kalinin Raid, the Germans have at least one fighter-bomber, and it has caused some major damage...a bomb exploded like 50m away, and lit up a truck, and wiped out it's passengers and another squad, and all sorts of crap. I'm kinda mad that my T-34s don't have the AA MGs. Uhhh...cupola?
  12. Actually, i was rather suprised about the effectiveness of flamethrowers against tanks (although i think i heard something about them being used against armor before): i was fighting for the Tractor Factory in The 'Grad (Stalingrad), and a pair of German Pz IV (i think) came up one of my flanks. I was trying to get a Pioneer platoon in position to drop their demo charges on the tanks, but they never threw anything. So, in desperation, i ordered the flamethrower to burn the tanks. The first tank went up like a firecraker on the first shot, the second tank was abandoned after the first shot, and two crewmen escaped (they were actually the only two people in the German force who weren't KIA, WIA, or captured. I spent the remaining two flame shots trying to get the second tank to blow up, but to no avail. Maybe i should have tried the Pioneers.....
  13. Well, my expierence with Assault is it's what you click when you want your boys to get in close and dirty. Usually, if i have SMG squads (or Rifle squads with high enough 40m firepower, although they don't hold a candle to SMG squads), all you need is to have one SMG squad assault an enemy squad, and the enemy squad is toast. Of course, i have the rest of the SMG platoon suppressing any friends the bad guys have, but still, the point is that when i want my boys to mess someone up, i tell them to assault them. ...i think i've gotten a PPSh equipped squad to dish out close to 500 firepower at close range....
