I own the extended version of SPMBT. Its a good game but the way turns are calculated kills me, I cant stand it. I wish Armored Brigade wasnt total dog **** and lived up to being a spritual successor.

For sure the modding for CM is a pain in the *** and none of us really want to compromise the way we have to here. It's probably the 2nd biggest drawback besides the lack of a dedicated multiplayer.

Augh speaking of headaches the desert sounds like one of the worst places to fight in SP unless the hills are very clear. Figuring out the elevation in SP is one of the most annoying parts of the game.

It cures my itch and that is all I care about in that regards. Cheers!

Yep which is why I was never able to get back into Steel Panthers, especially after discovering WEGO by Battlefront. Wite2 looks cool but it was very expensive for what you get. I can use it to help develop CM campaigns but I wonder just how historically accurate it is. From experience I know to check multiple sources which can be a total PITA on the Eastern Front. I am particularly interested in the formations attached to army groups/fronts, armies, and corps. It's generally really hard to find that sort of stuff.

Funny that! I have gone back to it! Both winSPww2 and winSPMBT (Extended versions)... SP was my main war game before CMx1 came out, as I was a big fan of Avalon Hill's Tobruk game. SP was just like a computer version of that board game at the time. Glad I have rekindled my appreciation for it! The updated graphics are a big improvement.

I am  not a big "Frankenstein" mod for cm fan. I guess that labels me as a "purist" to some and that is ok!😉

Because I am comfortable using it, Its one way to get my early WW2 time frame, mostly desert fix in. No modding required, every unit you could image and more... load up and go. Or create an early war scenario and hit play... no modding headaches involved. Music to my ears. You hear me BFC?! 😉

p.s, The old CMx1 I have went back to as well, but the infantry Roblox effect is too much for me these days. 😄

  3. You do not mention if this is a gaming laptop or desktop. If laptop, do you have an integrated Intel card that might need to be bypassed possibly? If Intel took over, that would be the issue. Happened to me years ago on my gaming laptop after a Windows update. I had to physically direct all my CM games to my nVidia card, otherwise the games wouldn't run passed 5 FPS on the Intel crap and they were obviously unplayable like that.

All I got for you sorry to say.

Andy formaly known as @Sgt.Squarehead comented frequently until his disapearance 14/2 2022. He made a lot of comments the last day here. I realy liked the guy. And his absence is notable.

I assume he wasn't a russian? He sure liked the russkie tanks though. It seems his disappearance coincides with all those russian tank turrets launching into space... embarrassment?

Seriously, probably health reasons. Hopefully I am wrong, but I will wish him well anyway.

  5. PM sent rocketman.... 😉

Groghead's forum for the FC2 mod(s): (my version is modded using only the v1.2 update only. I haven't tried the helicopter versions.)

Awesome site for scenarios and campaigns, Haglers11's site: https://sites.google.com/site/hagler11sflightcommander2site/home?pli=1

From the introduction at Hagler11's site... just to give this game more love:
Avalon Hill's Flight Commander 2 was published in 1994.  Designed by Charles Moylan, this rather ancient Windows 3.1 game of tactical aerial warfare is still widely regarded as one of the (if not the) finest aerial combat wargames ever produced for the PC.  Although designed and published in the mid '90s, the range of aircraft and weapons included in this turn-based simulation allow the modeling of aerial combat from the 50's to at least 2008. The 11 scenarios included in the original game touched on actual and hypothetical jet combat from the Korean War all the way to the Gulf War of 1991, but did not cover, by any stretch, the full diversity of aerial combat encounters during that period.   Fortunately, one of the great features of FC2 is the Flight Commander 2 Mission Builder, which Avalon Hill released to allow players to build custom missions.  While some FC2 players have created new scenarios for this classic game over the years, many areas of the past 58 years of jet combat have not been simulated in FC2.  This page is dedicated to presenting new scenarios I have built over the past several years. They cover both historical and hypothetical situations derived from a variety of sources, including web pages, books, magazines, board games and TV shows.

Dxwind and X-Mouse could possibly prove useful for this game for graphics enhancements. They work great for Steel Panthers WW2 and SPMBT, but I haven't tried them out with FC2 yet.

Do you like arguing strawmen or do you simply not read what i write?

    To requote myself

To clarify my overall position. I think this war is the best study case for a peer war in the near future and wed be well served carefully analyzing it and taking its lessons to heart.

And in regards to AFVs there are 2 overarching lessons learned

    1. AFVs are vulnerable

    2. AFVs are essential for offensive operations

The first lesson learned really doesnt need further explaination just look at the losses

The second one aparently does need so lets deal with that.

The core issue starts at another lesson this war reemphasises namely determined infantry cannot be shot off an objective with firepower alone. You can cause casualties but you still need to clear it with your own infantry. This point i dont think i need to elaborate on.

The next iussue is that infantry has difficulty gettin onto an objective using its own firepower and artillery only slightly changes that. This difficulty increases and decreasess with force density. Just compare the charkiv to the kherson offensive. Or if you want to experience it yourself atka a random cm map and fight a series of attacks starting at tiny size and eventually going to huge.

What tanks do is provide the firepower to get infantry onto an objective. They also provide supression via the threat of applying their firepower but thats a secondary effect they share with several other weapons systems. Their morale effect obviously decreases with at weapons available for the oponent but if they dont have any that can on its own win the fight.

This is the core reason why tanks exist now for over 100 years and are quite likely to continue existing for quite some time. Id love to see your argument for how this is weird twisted logic and what your suggested replacement is and please tell ukraine aswell because right now theyre still asking for tanks.

Im not going in detail over the rest of the post because it basically boils down to whatever you can think of to kill the tank it usually kills infantry easier and at greater rate, AFVs evolve with the threats, Soldiers dont.

+1. Out of the up vote option.

A 2022 mid year update does not relieve you of your 2023 New Year Traditional Update and Obligation. 😇.C'mon , I've bought every game since 1999, even that space game thingy that didn't work out.

I can top that!!! I purchased and still play a modded version of Flight Commander 2... 1995 BABY!! 😊

  8. In regards to the OP, I sure can and have many times over. Not even an issue for me thankfully. Just need to get a really good functioning campaign layer added that is all automated for even more bliss.

@SgtHatred. No time to block out an evening for multiplayer. Single player or sometimes PBEM for me and it has nothing to do with being comfortable only going up against a "script". Because I do not venture into the editor to see how things work in the game in regards to the ai scripting, I think this has helped me playing mostly against the ai at my own leisure. That and I ignore advise in the briefing most of the time and do my own thing for the most part. 😁

    To each their own.

Thank you ) Orthodox and Greco-catholics celebrate in Ukraine on 6-7th Jan, because we have difference between secular (Gregorian) and church (Julian) calendars. So, despite all churches celebrate on 25th Dec in secular world we have two weeks of difference. But in Ukraine since past year a discussion has started about western choice demands from churches switching to Gregorian calendar and 25th together with 7th was claimed as an official holiday. This year brought huge support for Christmss on 25th, mostly because "do not have any common with Russia", so Orthodox Church of Ukraine and Greco-Catholic churches made a statement they will establish a workgroup in order to develop proper decisions up to 2025 and prepare own people. Alas, many even pro-Ukrainian believers, especially in western Ukraine roughly stick for 7th Jan, because "this is our tradition", though they just don't want understand why this difference appeared and that their church really celebrates Christmass on 25th, but according to "old style".

Religion in Ukraine is a part of political life, because more than 60% relate themselves to Christians, so it is matter what words theese people can hear from priests.

We have two Orthodox churches - pro-Russian UOC MP (Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Moscow Patriarchy) and pro-Ukrainian OCU (Orthodox Church of Ukraine), recognized by Konstantinopol Patriarch in 2018, which caused effect of exploded bomb in Russia, because church, subordinated to Moscow was one of element of influence of Russia on Ukraine and keeping it in own orbit. UOC MP still have huge influence in Ukraine not only among usual people, but also among politics and officials. Now SBU raiding and their churches and finds there tons of Russian symbolics, anti-Ukrainian, antisemitic and stupid conspiracy books and other materials, issued by Russian church.

Also we have Greco-Catolic church, combining Orthodox  rite and subordinating to Pope.  Recently it  considered like mostly western ukrainian phenomenon, but in last years it spread own parishes far to the east. Greco-catholic church in western Ukraine in own time has played the same role that Catholic church in Poland, keeping national identity and spirit.

Also we have Catholic community, most of their believers are in western Ukraine among ethnic Poles, but in last years Catholic community grows and on other territory, especially in Kyiv. My wife, for example is catholic and works in Catholic Institute, so we are celebrating two Christmass with our parents )

That is why my Christmas tree always has come down anywhere after Jan. 7th (mom's side is Ukrainian Catholic). Takes on even more meaning this Christmas.

    Cheers all!!
