  1. So far I am enjoying it...

Impressions pretty much as for the demo:

Infantry with smoke capability at section level - can somebody let me know if this is realistic or not.

Artillery/AT guns wasting ammo and revealing position by expending rounds at single infantrymen.

Scouting does not seem to hinder enemy spotting - lone infantryman at 500m crawling to side of peak of ridge still spotted and taken out by hyper-accurate rifle fire.

Ability of ordinary infantry to spot for on-board artillery. Surely this should be restricted to FO at company level, or at least by section/platoon officers. Radio is a must for directing arty, or not?

Enemy infantry AI sometimes suicidal with failure to use ground.

Ability of infantry sections to crew AT guns and AFVs. How possible was this in reality? My guess/experience is that it was not - manning AFVs or arty requires trained personnel even to make it work, and setting "Driver" or "Gunner" to 0 is not prohibitive enough for me; ordinary infantry simply would not man a tank, and I don't know any infantrymen, who would be able to fire a field gun with any accuracy whatsoever, if at all.

I'm afraid we have the 'fight to the last man' situation again - twice now I've had to hunt through the village to find the last remaining infantryman. There needs to be some force surrender values set to avoid this unrealistic situation. Battles are usually not won by killing every last enemy combatant.

    Plus some new ones:

During the Kasserine Pass campaign (1st mission) as the Brits, I experienced the most accurate off-board artillery barrage ever seen: moving tanks and infantry were hit as if the arty were using direct fire. Made me laugh until I had to re-start, because I lost 2 sections of infantry and an immobilised Valentine.

During the "Tactics" tutorial, I had a half-section of infantry sneak into a building (Action Mode set to "Sneak" and "Scout" command used). The door was on the opposite side if the building; to the right was the main road with a few metres of wooden fence, and to the left was a wall with some breaches allowing ingress. 4 men decided to sneak along the road in the open, past the un-scaleable wooden fence (lol) until they got caught in the open by a lone German with an MG42. Seems that micro-management of waypoints is still important, and infantryman don't act alone, especially not MG42s firing from the hip!

AFV bailing out - you get a lot of stranded AFVs, immobilised and even F-Killed, but still the crews sit in them enjoying the heat, thus enabling them to spot my units.

@General Solomon: You can group infantry together and clear out houses using the "Storm" command. They use grenades, although I haven't seen any yet throwing them through the windows before barging in.

Thread winner best review so far that I agree with. So hard sometimes to pick between the fanboys and the realistic reviewers. Thanks guy. Looks as though the game like the others still has a lot of work ahead of it before it's really ready for the masses. I'll wait and get it from the bargain bin like I did TOW1 recently. I guess that has become the trend nowadays game releases and one to two years later it's ready for purchase. Sure am glad there are demos to save some of us from wasting our money.

  2. I wouldn't be so sure Windows 7 will replace XP finally. Not anytime soon for sure. It will take years to get mainstream to even accept Win 7 after the Vista scam. You can bet if a lot of games won't run on Win 7 gamers will turn on it just like they did Vista. If you're already having issues with games that's a sure sign it's in for a rough road to hoe.

  3. Back to Matrixgames and KOIOS PANZER COMMAND:SERIES then for me. Though their infantry system sucks at least it has a campaign mode and even a random campaign mode and at least rotate the map randomly feature. Nice try Battlefront you kept us waiting and waiting and waiting for a long time before you dropped the bomb on us. Guess there is still hope when you finally get away from this Modern Era CMX2 junk. I'll be back then to buy.

  4. While I agree with your opinion, shouldn't this be posted in the TOW section?

Regarding this thread, I'm one of the many who have the vista / nvidia 8xxx & 9xxx compatability problem and therefore will not be able to play CMC (if it is ever released). I had given up posting to this thread after receiving several rude and condescending responses from (a very few) of my "fellow" gamers and non-responses from Battlefront.

Hey it's not our fault you use that crappy on the way out Vista OS. You could have had XP installed, but, you chose Vista so suffer for your mistake don't blame it on Battlefront or other gamers. I bought a new computer recently and it has XP installed, so, don't act like you had no choice.

As for those waiting on Empire Total War you are going to just waste your money yet again. CA has been promising greatness ever since that horrible RTW initial release and the game and that miserable AI hasn't improved yet. I don't see this one making any progress either. But, if you just care about graphics and little gameplay or challenge then by all means waste your money. I'm not.

  5. I'd just be happy with an AI that knows when it's winning and plays to win. I don't care about graphics hell I'll play with 8 bit stick men if the AI is good/great. I just can't help shake the feeling though what we are going to get is just CMBO in module form with pretty graphics. Please explain to me what the CMX2 engine really has over the CMX1 engine other than graphics and the ability to play real time? Kinda feels like Matrixgames buying up the Talonsoft and Old Close Combat series, making it XP compatible and sticking them back out there at full price again.

  6. The point is the game engine is an ever evolving platform for our wargaming hobby. It will never, ever have everything you guys want to see in it, but it will continue to have more than any other game company is willing (or even capable of) providing.

I don't see how this is true since Matrixgames Panzer Command Kharkov far surpasses even your CMX2 modules because it has random generated campaigns and random generated battles even. I think you bit off more than you could chew with that statement Steve. Even the ai is better in it. Once Koios gets the Western front portion out it's going to put CMX2 Normandy and it's modules way behind unless you put back in quick battles and random created campaigns.

  7. Will the Strategy First publication of Blitzkreig work with the Battlefront expansion WAW?

The reason I ask is this on the order page of WAW:

"This is an expansion pack only and requires the base game of "Strategic Command 2 Blitzkrieg" (Battlefront.com English language version) to be installed and activated in order to play. Currently the expansion will NOT work with any other non-Battlefront.com version of Strategic Command 2 Blitzkrieg.

    "

  8. What I would like to see instead is the developers give the AI some life and have it taunt you during the game and say things like "What a stupid move that was" or "haha I sunk your battleship" lol stuff like that. I'd like it to be sound so we hear it no matter where we are, but, would be nice if the map auto scrolled to where the action was at when the AI spoke. This could actually lead to the ai winning more games I think as players who really get serious about being taunted would perhaps make more mistakes and forget their focus. I do this sort of stuff in PBEM games and it works for me. :P

  9. This is a perfect opportunity to employ the engineer unit for building an airbase infrastructure, like I suggested before.

Allow the SeaBees(SC Egr unit) the same capability as the special forces amphibious feature, but with the addition that it can now build an airbase much like it does a fortification.

Of course the fortification then has an inherent 5 supply/50% efficiency rating to simulate the required base logistics foundation to support combat units.

    What could be more historical?

The fact that players would build airbases all over the map is what wouldn't be historical. Now if there were an extended delay before the airbases were built AND they could be DESTOYED or put in unusable conditions I'd be for that. But, this is an operational strategic game not Civilization IV or Tropico.

  10. Silent Kipper,

Not that it will necessarily change your mind at this point but I thought I would clarify one important point of apparent contention.

The easiest way to de-activate the elicense requirements, i.e. should the very unlikely situation ever be required, is to simply provide a non protected executable of the game.

Even, and we are talking a very worst case scenario here, if all entities related to the development and publication of this game go out of business, there are many ways to make this file readily and easily available considering the multitude of download sites on the web.

FYI, one of the reasons I mentioned that I can provide assurances of this is that since I am the Developer, this is quite easy to do since I am the one that actually makes the game executable.

    Hope this helps,

    Hubert

That's all fine and well, but, what if you just happen to have a massive heart attack and die? I know that's morbid and all, but, we're talking about consumers vs business practices that you are now saying you are the soul person who can do something about the elicense. Plus, I didn't see 3DO or the others making no-cd ability of their products when they went out of business or stopped making products. It's all fine and well to give us your well being thoughts of "this moment", but, things change, people change and attitudes and personalities change in given situations so what GUARANTEE do we have that you'll live up to your WORD? I'm just trying to understand why software developers and publishers think they are better than every other industry out there that doesn't live by these practices, offer refunds and the whole 9 yards of "consumer satisfaction". I get more customer satisfaction buying books and music cd's than I do out of software purchases. I just can't fathom how the software industry treats EVERYONE like they are pirates first and foremost and treat those that DO PAY just like they would a pirate.

On that note, the demo is great and I'd really like to have a copy of it, pay full price, but, I will NOT cower and be victumized by intrusive DRM's or copyprotection or any other means that is intrusive or forces me to do a certain thing or be online to play a silly game. No game is worth that. No gamer should have to do that or be treated like a pirate. I will also push for boycotts towards any publishers or developers who do so. We boycotted StarForce and got that off of several publishers games I guess we'll just have to do it at other places as well. Back to Matrixgames where trust comes before greed.

  11. Thanks to both of you that really helped and I will definitely give the demo a try. I am a Pacific Fan of WW2 and I'm always looking for another rendition of that theater since they are mostly so few and far between. I have Pacific General and I enjoy that very much. The HPS games are merely ok and I don't play them much because the ai isn't that great. Rising Sun Gold is about the same, so, I'm really looking for something more challenging, but, not the level of War in the Pacific by Matrixgames because I just think that game is too busy. I'd like to finish a complete game in a day or two. Long as there are options to tweak the ai to a harder difficulty then I think I will be happy. Giving the ai more has never bothered me. It's when I give the ai more and it still sucks is when I don't feel the developers put enough time into the ai to make it challenging even for the hard core of us. Thanks again.

  12. Well really you can already play this game sorta. You have CMBB so play CMBB all this does it make a campaign link out of CMBB and there's even already campaigns in CMBB that do that already albeit it's all tactical not strategic. Although I am anxious for this game also I'm still going to miss that it will never have random generated campaigns like Matrixgames Karkhov by Koios does. That's what I'm playing waiting on this one an other than the weird infantry death system it's not a bad game.

  13. Well here comes yet another game of war, but, once again is the AI any good? How many levels of difficulty does it have? How much can the gamer tweak the AI to make it harder to play against? All too many games come out with hardest mode and they are easy. Is this ai going to be anywhere near the ai of the expansion of SC2? I ain't buyin it or recommending it if it's not.

  14. So I'll say it again... if we don't listen, or don't care, about critical feedback... then where do you think our motivation comes from to continue making free improvements to a game that was released more than a year ago? How many other developers out there do that?

    Steve

Oh just about all of them at Matrixgames, HPS, Shrapnel, just about every mmorpg, hrmmm, and Paradox how many patches did EU II get YEARS after it was released..will your company do so much? Fact is you left the Combat Mission origional series unfinished and still with bugs and issues. So, I wouldn't go patting yourself on the back when others have done so much MORE.
