  1. Great. Sam and I are married as of August - you know, 11 years, two kids a dog and a house it was probably time.

    Been through a couple of jobs - enjoying this one I started a month ago, it's more front-end consultancy plus I get commission.

    I don't really play CM any more but I drop in the forums occasionally. How's life treating you?

    We've bounced around a bit. We're in Nebraska now. Some ups and downs. I bought a copy of CM:BN, thinking that I'd play the heck out of it, but I haven't touched the game in over a year. I haven't really played video games that much, as a matter of fact. Had to take a break from school and go back to work! Now, I'm trying to do the opposite. lol

  2. It's fun and very challenging, but almost feels like a puzzle game more than a wargame due to the large scale/short number of turns. There is some room for flexibility, but it seems that for most scenarios there are only so many "correct" moves to make if you want to capture all the objectives on time.

    I guess it just depends on what sort of game you are looking for.

    Yeah, I've only played the Voronezh scenario and it seems like the emphasis is more on maintaining supply lines than destroying the enemy. That's not necessarily bad, just different.

  3. I have a couple suggestions: Could a "delete file" command be added to the saved game menu? My files are cropping up and, while I can navigate Windows and delete them that way, I'd like to have a simple button to click. We had the option in the CM1 series...

    I've had a couple of facepalm moments when moving my tanks. I gave a tank a hunt order and noticed later that the crew had bailed out and proceeded on foot along the hunt order path. When I thought I had ordered the tank to "hunt," I had actually ordered the crew to bail out. What I didn't realize was that I had the special command panel selected instead of movement. I had ordered a machine gun team to deploy before selecting the tank. Having the "K" key bound to both commands in separate panels is the problem. I changed the hotkeys so this won't happen again, but I wonder how many times this has ruined a battle for others.

    Pressing "O" while on the combat panel will select a target arc. If you switch to the movement panel and press "O" again, the "move" order will be selected. Is that a glitch?

    Oh, and bring back the armor arcs!

    Now, don't be so sensitive about this criticism, folks. I still love the game.

  4. So ya use dubious tactics (charging HTs up into .50cal fire - you read how effective .50cal was/is?) then spit the dummy and blame the game?

    MG34 and MG42 did have AP ammo maybe not as effective as the .50 cal but still enough to take out the very lightly armoured US HTs. HTs pretty much are really only battlefield taxis - follow the tanks cross country,get the dismounts to where you want em then dismount em where they fight as infantry. HTs are useful for follow on support in mopping up but I'd be keeping em waaay back until such time as I know the enemy's AT capability is pretty screwed. But charging em forward like Tiger tanks is not the most effective way to use. Fun for your opponent for sure...

  5. There is a Knowledgebase about the Repository at www.battlefront.com/helpdesk (there is a link from www.battlefront.com/repository as well).

    In short, extract the RAR file (RAR files are compressed archives just like ZIP), and put the file you get as a result into the correct folder of your game installation (I forget what it is called exactly for CMBB, probably something like "Scenarios") so you can select it from the list of playable missions.

  6. You should watch the “panzer grenadier training film 1944” a four part film. Used to be on You Tube.

    The main point to note is that SPW are not committed until the enemy has lost its supporting armour and guns. They were definitely used against light opposition only, against flanks or in pursuit. They seem to have used smoke quite freely from their own vehicles to provide cover - something you cannot do in CMBB, just like the Russian tanks do not have access to smoke pots. Have a look at George McCs Peiper series to see just what you can accomplish with SPW. Available from www.blowtorchscenarios.com. I fought a long four battle operation in this series using SPW beating off early war Russian infantry and dodging their tanks. Great stuff where you had to watch your ammo expenditure of your SPWs.

    I was playing one of George's scenarios when my old PC crapped itself and I had to take a break from CM. George's scenarios are epic, and the halftrack really gets a chance to shine in his "Peiper" series. My old rig used to cough and wheeze its way through processing a turn. Things should be different now!

  7. Hi, guys. It's been a while. I hope everyone's doing well. I'm glad to see this forum is still chugging along. I had to give up CMBB because it won't run properly(cascading graphics glitch) on my new PC. There was no time, anyway, because I went back to school.

    Speaking of school, I was in my university's book store when I spotted a name: Zumbro. The name didn't immediately ring a bell, but a quick google turned up In Deadly Combat. Much forehead-slapping followed. It turns out that he's the military history coordinator here. He's even given lectures on Bidermann's memoir not far from my home, and I had no idea. D'oh!

    So, I contacted him and he penciled me in for a meeting. We had a very interesting conversation. We discussed the book, among a number of things. I told him about this site, but he does not seem to have any interest in video games, especially the war kind. It must be a veteran thing.

    I was more than a little surprised to learn that he is in regular contact with Herr Bidermann, who is still alive at 89 years old, though his health is apparently failing. I returned the surprise when I told him that his book is practically required reading for CMBB players. Before I knew it, we were two hours into a lengthy discussion on the Eastern front. Fascinating stuff. He even squeezed in some grumbling about Ambrose. lol

    They're starting a new master's in military history program here, too. I have a new goal in life.

    To all the dreamers out there fantasizing about being able to play CMC against a CPU opponent...forget it! Let these guys walk before they can run. It is tough enough for these guys to design this game just to interface with CMx1 and the human player. To expect them to then literally be able to "train a computer how to play the game as an competent opponent" is a challenge that will just waste further time and money.
