  1. Could you please let me know how to import palm trees and/or buildings from CMSF into CMBN?

    Thanks :)

So this mashup is the result of a bit of mucking about with Photoshop for an hour or two -- my skills are very limited as you can see.

And before anyone gets excited -- no actual mod exists yet and I am not committing to doing one on any specific timetable. My skills at modding uniforms, kit and faces are even worse than my Photoshop skills, nor did I ever figure out that model swapping thing (paging Ryujin or Mord!). If any of you care to take a swing at any of this stuff, that would be super!

I really just slapped this up here to get a discussion going, and maybe inspire a subcommunity. First though, let's please be clear about a couple of things to avoid rehashing old arguments and derailing the thread.

    1. Read their lips: BFC will never do a PTO CM game no matter how much we ask. They've been very very clear on this. So please let's not bring that up again.

    2. Same thing with flamethrowers -- the game engine will have fires when they're dang good and ready. Yes, Virginia, you can do perfectly good PTO battles without flamethrowers, LVTs or Marines.

    3. The CM editor is perfectly capable of representing pretty much every form of Pacific terrain (palm trees can be model swapped in from CMSF) except grass huts, bamboo thickets and volcanic caves. And the game will definitely run these kinds of maps so long as they don't get too big.

  2. So I have a Panther sitting in the middle of the road when it spots the crew of a brewed up American vehicle. Here's the problem, instead of ripping away with its machine gun, the Panther repeatedly fired its main gun. Would they really blast away with their main gun at just a couple of guys running away?

I have read several actual real life accounts of US combat veterans who saw tanks fire 88 main rounds at a single person.

  3. The first 2 modules will only contain stuff that appeared in Normandy during the summer of 44. You may see additional stuff in later modules that will let you do what your looking to do.

In August 1944 the first clashes took place on the Siegfried Line: the section of the line where most fighting took place was the Hürtgenwald area in the Eifel, 20 km (13 miles) southeast of Aachen. An estimated 120,000 troops, plus reinforcements, were committed to Hürtgen. The battle in this confusing, heavily forested area claimed the lives of 24,000 troops plus 9,000 non-battle casualties. The German death toll is not documented, but Hans von Luck estimates it at around 9,000.

After the Battle of Hürtgenwald, the Battle of the Bulge began, starting at the area south of the Hürtgenwald, between Monschau and the Luxembourgish town of Echternach. This offensive was a last-ditch attempt by the Germans to reverse the course of the war. It cost the lives of many without producing any lasting success.

There were serious clashes at other parts of the Siegfried Line and soldiers in many bunkers refused to surrender, often fighting to the death. By spring 1945, however, the last Siegfried Line bunkers had fallen at the Saar and Hunsrück.

  4. People often mention "To the Volga" when talking about CMBB's scale. It should be mentioned, though, that "To the Volga" was utterly unplayable on a lot of machines when released so the comparison is a bit unfair.

There's no 'official rule' governing acceptible scenario force size in CM:BN (that I'm aware of) so I suppose a scenario designer could go crazy on scenario scale if he wanted. But there's no great upside to building a monster scenario that only 15% of players would be willing or able to attempt. I read somewhere that the opening of operation Cobra saw 4000 U.S. vehicles parked nose-to-tail behind the front in an area of just a couple sq. km. That would make for a very unpleasant game scenario. :)

From the book "DEATH TRAPS: THE SURVIVAL OF AN AMERICAN ARMORED DIVISION IN WORLD WAR 2" by Belton Y. Cooper - excellent book, reading it now :)
