  1. True Warmaker, the MG-42 was much easier to produce, and over all a cheaper quality weapon over the MG-34 with it's extremely tight tolerances. But seems that these cheaper-made weapons were much more effective in combat than extremely well made, perfectly engineered weapons. Look at the Soviet machine guns like the PPS and AK-47. Can leave them in the mud for a month or let them rust up and still they will work. Reliability is the key, and the MG-42 beat the MG-34 in that category.
  2. I just bought a Garand not too long ago, and it simply rocks. I have a 98k as well, and as far as I can say only a fool would prefer the bolt action mauser over the M-1 in combat. The M-1 is very hefty and therefore that 30.06 cartridge doesn't kick too bad.
  3. My father has an MP-40, and man is it fun to shoot! There is absolutely no recoil whatsoever, as it is a fairly heavy SMG, firing the small 9mm round. You can fire a whole mag and keep it ALL on target! The main difference is reliability. Most German weapons(or anything for that matter)are very presicely manufactured, which gives you little room for error. Get a bit or mud or crud in the reciever , and chances are it may lock up on you. The quality of the russian PPS was not as meticulously manufactured. It had room for error and could function with a handful of mud jammed in the receiver. Ruskies prob didnt even know how to clean them, but they didnt have to, cause they worked when you needed them! So for the simple issue of reliability is the reason many landsers traded in their MP-40's for the PPS. A little less important is the fact it had a 75 round drum mag compared to 32 for the MP. Most important is that it didnt jam.
  4. The whole point is that the MP-44 wouldv'e been much appreciated by the men then using 98k's, and would have been much more effective in combat. But would this weapon have made a difference in the outcome of the war? Of course not. Also, the men in the German squad's main job was to protect their squad MG. That is the whole foundation of German small unit organization. I do not agree that it doesn't matter if these guys have bolt actions or assault rifles. Certainly their job is to achieve fire supperiority , and you do this by laying down fire, which the MP-44 would do much better than the carbine. The MP-44 would simply help the squad to maintain that fire superiority and protect the MG much more effectively. I do agree that the MG's caused the vast majority of casualties inflicted by the sqaud.
  5. ahhhhhhh.......yes, you must have a printer to do the pencil and paper approach. If you dont have one, save the: 1. player user guide 2. newest set of BCR(Biltongs Campaign Rules) 3. Parameters sheet 4. Battle Group sheet 5. Favor sheet 6. Random die sheet(if you dont have a die) to a disk and take to the copy shop to get some printed out. I suggest reading the Player Guide and BCR at the same time. Read what it says about each step in one and then the other guide/rules. Refer to all notes. Just go down the list and do what it says. Took me many hours to get it straight myself. It is very intimidating at first, but well worth the time spent after you get the hang of it!
  6. Very true Tracer. Yes, if the ban on jet developement had not been in place and they could have been around much earlier, that would have made a huge difference. Also, if Doenitz had had his way and all Naval production concentrated on medium U-boat production would be another "what if". Germany only had 52 boats at the start of the war, but could easily have had 300. In all of 1939, I believe only 6 boats went to sea. I am pretty sure England could have been knocked out if there were that many boats at sea in the early years, before effective countermeasures were developed. Another big "what if" that I feel would have made a huge difference, is if the Japs had attacked Russia from the East in '41. Allies help each other out, right? Once it was clear they were not a threat, Stalin released all those Siberian divisions to the west, and we all know the rest.
  7. There is no way in hell that the MP-44 would've prolonged the war. The rifle would've helped the fighting chances of the men, but it's an extreme long shot to think it by itself could have prolonged the inevitable.
  8. I totally agree with Joker. Not trying to cause a fuss or anything, just can't understand how simple typos could make it into a 2ND Addition. I placed my order in January, and just recieved it last week. It seems like 5 months would be plenty of time to correct any misspelled words. On another note, to be honest, I haven't found the manual that helpful. Even all the charts do not have all the info you need, for example, blast strength. Anyhow, as someone said earlier, we as CM fans are extremely nit-picky in our gaming. Historical accuracy is of the highest priority b/c we all love the realism involved. So, as fans of this type, we might be a little harder to please than your average Joe who thinks Battlefield 1942 is an accurate depiction of WWII combat.
  9. Upgrading Attached Units- -Can you only upgrade one of your 3 units between each battle, or can you do all 3 if you have the points? I assume you may only upgrade one bet. each battle?
  10. Jedi, I suggest you keep the Mech Inf for a while, maybe the whole of '41. You can trade them in whenever you want though, at least I think. Yes, you divide by 1.72 when you are assaulting. The reason is that you have already rolled up the points for your forces, so you take that number and divide it by 1.72(for assaults)and the resulting number is for the Ivans. This way you will have a bit more than the Russians. You will need more since on an assault they will be heavily dug in. Hope this helped.

  13. I agree w/ Krazy. Plus, the lines are very subdued and light, so they are easy to forget about when you don't want to notice them anymore!
  14. Yes, I think that pic is exactly the same mod as I've got. It simply draws slight lines on the terrain. This just helps you to identify slight depressions/rises in the terrain that would otherwise be harder to make out w/out the grid. Especially useful for flatter maps, where it is tougher to make out elevations.
  15. OBJ- Good ideas....it does seem like this is in effect aleady somewhat. You lose(or do not gain as much) favor by losing vehicles, armor, mortars, guns, that are in your TF. I guess what you're saying is Infantry though, and you're right...TF Infantry can almost be thrown away. But then again it too relates to favor, as the victory calculations are influenced by each sides total casualties, and this in turn determines what size victory/defeat/draw.....and that determines what "Result Favor" you get. I guess I'm just saying that your TF casualties do indirectly influence the favor you will recieve.

  19. I would have to say the capitulation at Stalingrad by overwhelming Soviet forces is the reason for the casualty spike in Jan '43. Where else would those casualties be listed in those numbers? But of course many tragedies occurred during that winter of '42...the destruction of the Italians, Romanians, etc.

  23. Yes, that is the most impractical hunk of crap on treads I've ever seen! It's utterly useless, but it would make a fun target in the game :cool:
  24. I only use it if im done with that unit, they are out of ammo(mortar team, HMG, etc) or something like that. In the manual i think it says there is a 50% chance that they will rout or something like that if you use it. I was thinking there has to be something I dont know about it, and what it can do for you.
  25. I never use this command, but I'm sure it must be useful in some situations. Can anyone give me some pointers?
