  3. Results so far: waited 40 minutes but nothing happened. In an act of desperation I followed an opponents advise and just copied the entire folder from my old defunct computer's hard drive. I totally didn't expect it to work since programs usually install dll etc files all over the place in windows, but, hey presto, one working fully updated edition of CMBB on my work computer!
  4. My notebook (dell with ATI radeon) died, so now I'm in the market for something good enough to be able to play CMX2 as well as give me fog (oh how I miss the fog!) in the current games. Any recommendations? I'm thinking about the Toshiba Qosmio - they have NVIDIA GeForce FX Go 5700. Are they good for CM? Are all ATI cards incapable of fog? Has anyone got integrated graphics capable of displaying fog? Looking forward to your answers! Thanks
  5. Hey I'm having a similar problem. I'm trying to reload CMBB but the computer just whirs (doesn't actually crash but it stays like this for a long time, I get impatient and ctrl-alt-del, and it shows up as non-responding. According to the thread below (about CMBB reloading), some computers have difficulty reading CDROMs with over 650 megs, so just be patient and wait. I'm going to be more patient and see if it works. I'll report back on my findings
  6. Yeah, er, that's a pretty impressive misfire. What was the range of a German ft?
  7. No problems Platehead. I'll get to grips with the Bear tomorrow morning and send you a move then.
  8. Not seen hair nor hide of the platehead either. Where's the bear?
  9. Well, I got into the finals because of large dollops of luck in the first round, and then because the leader of my group dropped out. I don't care about playing for prizes, I'm just happy to be there to see what the air is like at these rarified heights. As far as I'm concerned this is the best group to be in!
  10. JohnO, you're really not going to write AARs? That's a shame with your background. I was looking forward to reading them. My AARs just show how lucky I was, but I wanted to read about theory in yours.
  11. "Somebody's been playing Across Moltke Bridge methinks" and I bet you can guess which side I was playing.
  12. "When are you going to demonstrate tactics vs a human player, and a decent one at that? Playing vs the AI is next to useless when you are faced with a human player as the AI is predictable, and the human is not" Panzer76 "This simple example against the AI is meant to illustrate Russian infantry force tactics" JasonC To be fair it was not supposed to demonstrate how to beat human opponents, merely Russian tactics. It is a shame that the other AAR was not finished though. Any chance of it being resurrected?
  13. How about having to correct every single movement of troops who are advancing through a smokescreen on an exposed narrow structure such as a bridge? Otherwise they'll try to crawl into the river.
  14. Kingfish: "Shooting for this weekend-ish" So that's the start of round 2? Brilliant! Really looking forward to it.
  15. Brent Pollack: "mostly just propaganda shoots in a safe zone" Err, in this case, propaganda for what? "Join ze German Army - ve ha za vitest legs"

  17. Wow, so that is what 'gun damage' looks like: http://www.aeronautics.ru/archive/wwii/photos/gallery_004/2432.jpg
  18. Another example of the "Blitz Myth": with the armor speeding ahead, only by traveling light could the infantry hope to keep up.

  20. Ah! Excuse me - I didn't read your post properly. I just looked at my and my opponents scores and saw they were reversed and just assumed that that was the case for all of them. Forgive me its still morning here (I don't start thinking until noon)
  21. Hi Treeburst, I don't think anyone disputes that rewarding a big win is wrong. The problem is that under the Nabla system, the unfavored side in an unbalanced scenarios has the opportunity to rack up the points, thus depriving those playing the other side the chance to advance to the finals. So, to score big points in this tournament you need: 1) to play the unfavored side in the most unbalanced scenarios 2) be strong enough while your opponent is weak enough to take advantage by winning heavily. So, by point 2) above the player should be rewarded, but 1) above is just a matter of luck which should not favor one player over another under any circumstances.
  22. You've still given the losing side the negative amount of points of the winning side. The problem with that is that it is very unfair on the other participants of a group in which somebody like WN is playing. Notice how the big scores he racked up meant that everybody in his group scored in negatives? I really don't think that is fair that they end up with awful overall scores just because one person in their group is spectacularly good. An improved Nabla system has to include a way of scoring points for the losing side that is not an arbitrary 'we'll make it the negative of the winners score'. 23. I am feeling guilty since I am the one whose name Jon tactfully removed. That e-mail was sent to everyone in the group, and it seemed to me that the meaning was clear: the only circumstances in which I would gain entry into the finals is if it was worked out on the basis of top scores overall (in which I would be 12th), which it most definitely is not. There was never any suggestion in the e-mails that I read that his winning was anthing other than due to the fact that he was the strongest player in the group. Come back Dawg! You're being too sensitive!
  24. Absolutely, Dawg won fair and square in our group - I've never thought overwise. As far as I'm concerned all this discussion is over how to improve things next time, and none of it takes anything away from the superb organization and enjoyment that we've got from it so far.
