  1. Just wondering if anyone has tried the Sudden Strike Series? I was at EB today and noticed "Sudden Strike Universe" It was only AUD25.00 and looking lonely as it was the only box there, so I picked it up to give it a home. It has it all the games up till version 3. After a quick google I found the FireGlow forum for Sudden Strike III, but none for the original or II. Does anyone know of a forum and or user scenario location for this series? I may give this one a look at soon, so it would be nice to find a support forum and or user made scenarios if any. Any views about the game would be appreciated good or bad. Cheers MarkL
  2. Just curious why you feel so strongly about this issue? I certainly like having a bound hard copy of the manual rather than pdf printout, but other than that I think I prefer downloaded games--just more convenient, at least for me. </font>
  3. My only criteria is that there is no e-license. I want it to be like the old CMBB. Cheers MarkL
  4. This is why I obtained the Kalypso version. If this is the way customers are being treated it is time to move on. I am really put off by this move to increase copy protection for legitimate buyers. This one will just join the others on the shelf as bad buys. After Pacific Storm, T-72 and now this, I should lean to avoid the Russian titles. Anyway ignore my little rant from a dissatisfied customer, I will just move on and be quiet. My time on this forum has ended for now. Cheers MarkL
  5. It will be worth watching the reviews of this new title. One thing is that it will not have Battlefronts new license, and for me that is one real plus. I just hope they pull it off this time as others have said Panzer Command showed a lot promise. Mean while I still love the CMx1 titles. Cheers MarkL
  6. I missed this title after reading the review at the wargamer. But I may have a look at this later release. Were there any third party scenarios ever released for Winter Storm? That always seems to hint at it's general popularity. Cheers MarkL
  7. If they dropped it I would get a copy also. I will not be buying anything other titles with this type of protection. Cheers MarkL
  8. One more last comment from me on this topic for the time being. While it is true to some extent that with regard to tried and true interfaces that most people have got to know, I think things need to progress. Especially to keep up with new hardware. I was not so long ago that interfaces only used the left mouse button. For anyone who does not like the new mouse movements in CMSF I would suggest if possible to try one of the new mice like the Logitech G5. It has three movement speeds adjustable without the driver. Giving you either fast or slow movement at the press of a button. This makes the moving around the CMSF screen a very nice experience that is not as good with a standard mouse. Like wise my second recent purchase was a Logitech G15 programable keyboard with 18 seperate programable keys. It is my intention to try and use these to standardise the key across multiple games I like to play. There have been some excellent examples here that I am sure Battlefront will take up with future patches to improove the interface. But I am sure that in the meantime that there are controllers that will greatly enhance the players satisfaction that do not cost all that much. While I hope the interface is improoved to keep everyone happy, I would also like to see interfaces made that are customisable so we can make better use of the new controllers to enhance our experience. FPS like ARMA now support track IR which is a real breakthrough. If we kept only to the old interfaces this would not have occurred at all. While the key board is still very important I think it's future as the main controller will diminish. I also like flight simultors and have a full HOTAS kit to enhance the experience. I look forward to the day I can program the interface of games like CMSF to suit myself and not be tied down by the developers or anyone else's configuration. Anyway just my take on the issue. Cheers MarkL
  9. I suppose this could be considered off topic, but to me the interface has been considerably improoved with the patches. I have played quiet a few computer games over the years and the interface has always been up for discussion. With FPS I like to use the arrow keys to move, but I do get buy with WASD if that is all I can use. I have purchased a few programable keyboards and controllers over the years that have really made it easier for this sort of game. For me the new mouse controls are a real breakthrough that I hope others follow. I would like to see more effort in fixing some of the game play issues themselves than the interface at this stage. If possible could the interface be made more modable? and let the community play around with it. That way Battlefront could spend some time on the other game play issues themselves. Just my thoughts. Cheers MarkL
  10. I have just read most of this thread, and can see merits for most of the points of view. I must admit one of the fundamental changes that I do not like is the change to product activation. Luckily I live in Australia and could get the Paradox version. I was going to purchase the "Strategic Command 2" bundle but ended up purchasing "The Calm and the Storm" instead. Just a serial number and no CD needed to play. Don't know how other think but I am fundamentally against activation and this alone will possibly stop me buying their future titles. Not trying to bah the product here, but I would like to knowhow others feel about the activation change. I am now starting to look at "Matrox" and "Stategy First" for their titles that just use serial numbers for install. but I still hope CMSF improoves and I still have faith in Battlefront to fix it. Cheers MarkL
  11. Thanks for the tip. Now I a happy camper again. So many good things about Firefox that I do not know yet. Cheers MarkL
  12. This may be a little off topic, but do other people find the advertising bar too large. On my screen with the Firefox section at the top the the BattleFront advertisement bar I loose half the screen. Wish it were a little smaller. A small gripe I know. Cheers MarkL
  13. I would really like a Linux version of the CMx1 games. It would be enough for me to install that operating system. I would also like to see a version of all the CMx1 games be released without copy protection now. some game companies do that after the last version and patch. Would be nice. I would even pay for the set again. Maybe if the CMBB campaign is ever released it could be bundled with the whole CMx1 series with no protection. I think this would make it a good purchase for all the people who still play CMx1 and a very good collectors addition. Make it Linux compatable as well and bingo good sales. Well just my wish anyway as I will be playing the CMx1 series for a long while yet. Cheers MarkL
  14. It takes awhile to mod CMBO when it is done it is very good. Still the one of the three that I like best. Easiest to play. Cheers MarkL
  15. Well after looking at a lot of reviews including a lot at the armchair general I noticed one of our stores is now stocking some of the so called "Garage Games" They had Making History The calm & The Storm, Galactic Civilisation II and Space Empires, and a few other I had not heard of before. All games with no copy protection and not needing a CD in to play. I decided to purchase all three even though they may not have been my first choice and may never play the space games at all. After talking to one of the staff I thought I should support a shop who was game enough to stock games that were not exactly main stream here in Australia. That was my birthday money gone in a flash. Now before christmas I have to decide on a title from Matrix. It will be either Conquest of the Aegean or John Tillers campaign series, both of which I really want to try. I will probably end up getting both, as they are not that expensive. I wish BattleFront would go down the same road as some of these other developers and release games without protection and not need a disk in to play. I think they may make more sales that way. If they ever release this campain game I would really like them to say release a compilation of all the old CMX1 games with the copy protection removed. This would make a real incentive for people to buy the compilation including the campaign for CMBB. If they changed the code a little bit so people playing PBEM games with the no CD required versions could only play against the same release it may spur a lot of sales. Anyway just an idea that will never see the light of day. Cheers MarkL
  16. I have been looking at the reviews. Conquest of the Aegean seems to get only good reports. From the Matrix forum it looks like they may be releasing a new game based on that engine. It may be worth waiting for the newer game that may hopefully have a few extras. John Tillers Campaign series have caught my attention as well and I like the way it is presented. The only thing that worries me about this one is the micro management. From what I have read no orders carry over from one turn to another. So when many units are in a game you get shot up badly when you forget to re-issue a fire order. But this one has so much to offer. Has anyone one tried this one yet with a big scenario? The Armchair General has some good reviews and pointed me towards a new game that is getting very good reports. "Making History, the Calm & The Storm". It looks more modern, but sure about the look yet. But it is available for purchase in Sydney shops at least. I will try the demo of this one to see. If it was not for the elicense I would try a Battlefront Title, but I think I will get a game from either Matrix or another supplier that just uses serial numbers and no CD needed to play. This really appeals to me as the whole copy protection thing is starting to annoy me a little. I am also starting to lean towards these board game styles now where game play is more important than graphics, and I really the concept of keeping these older titles going. Cheers MarkL
  17. Thanks for the recommendation. Do you know what Matrix Games use for their download installations? Serial number / key or activation? From looking at their site they have a few older style games that may be worth trying. But after some of the experiences with Flight Simulator addons that require activation I am not keen to go down that path again. I had not heard of John Tiller's Campaign Series before, but after a bit of web viewing they seem fairly popular. I will finish the night reading a few more reviews. Cheers MarkL
  18. Hi, Since this does not look like coming out any time soon, does anyone have any recommendations for another large scale war game. By large scale I mean bigger than the CM series. I do not expect anything as realistic either, as long as it is reasonable and not a click fest. RTS or similar will do. I would like to try some thing that has at least land and air. To include sea as well may be too hopeful. Preferably 3D as well. Many game claimed to be 3D but the map could not be rotated so to me these are not really 3D to me. I am only interested in single player against the PC, and the title would have to have a quick battle generator as well, hopefully at least. Something that models ranged weapons reasonably well would also be nice. Some games that I have seen seemed to have swapped models of people with tanks, as the tanks fight right next to each other. That is one thing I like about the CM series. It models close and ranged weapons fairly well. I have noticed that some of the older titles like Panzer General, Command & Conquer Generals etc are going quiet cheap now. Are these any good? I do not know how others feel but after trying CMSF 1 to 1 representation of soldiers is not too good for me. It looks more abstracted with the way they move and are presented now than in the old CM series. Almost comical in some ways. Any recommendations would be appreciated. cheers MarkL
  19. I purchased CoH and it certainly looks good. All I use it for now is making movies for me to watch. I just start a battle and let it run. Then watch the movie later as I do something else. It is worth it just for that. I hate the way the tanks in CoH drive right up to each other to fight it out. No ranged combat at all, so it is not really a proper war game, but fun none the less. I originally purchased it just because it had no copy protection as that is something I support. It is the activation that is keeping me from purchasing this title at the moment as it is something I do not support. But I may change my mind someday. Cheers MarkL
  20. Finally downloaded the demo today. After all the talk about the new camera I just started moving the mouse and trying all the buttons etc. For me it fell into place in less than 5 minuets. I like this style of movement after Pacific Storm which is sort of similar. As for the rest, well I just may have to read the manual. From a quick look it seems similar, and I still feel at home with the game, even though it will need relearning. Seems to be the same old fiend Just reworked. Wish the old movement keys worked, but oh well. Back to being slaughtered. Cheers MarkL
  21. Yes I also rememer Fion's good posts. I saved all his AAR's I could find. I even made word documents out of his articles from Mad Mat's site for the early CMBO AAR's including "Sunken Lane" From memory he left the forum after after a heated disscussion about tactics, but I will not elaborate. But I have seen posts from him in other forums awhile ago. Hope he is still well. Cheers MarkL
  22. Please excuse this qestion but will all versions need activation. (DVD not download) From memory I think this was going to be required for this title. I am still grappling with this idea, and still can not make up my mind. I have not upgraded to the new MS Flight Simulator because of that need. Sorry but had to ask as I own all previous titles and are still interested in this one. This has probably been discussed but I do not drop by that often these days. 23. That sounds promising. There were a lot of third party mission generators for the IL2 series. If we can get similar third party tools it would be very good. Cheers MarkL
