  1. Winter 41

Alantic: Subs spoted and sunk off the coast of Canada. Bomber sent to Torbrok, UK fleet with Russian BC in tow slits in two - Carriers returning to England with damaged BBs, BCs and undamaged BCs heading to Gabralter.

West: UK hording MPPs in case of a late sealion. Fighers bombing everything in sight.

Med: With support from air and naval units; Itialian corps outside of Torbrok destroyed and HQs damaged. Axis units retreat to Tripoli, DAK can't operate and is destroyed in expoitation attack. Axis HQs are disbanded and UK marchs west to Trioplio, facing one Corps and Army.

    Early Winter

East: Backed by 5 L2 jets German takes Rostova and cross's the Dinepier. More units are battleing three Red Corps in the Crimea, with the low supply USSR can't do much. Moscow front is quiet and no units in sight of Leningrad. Finland is down to its capital and one corps. Siberian Troops Transfer. WHERE IS THE USA!

    Late Winter

East: Finland falls. Major counter attack south of the Dinepier. A German army group (mostly damaged armor) has exploited down to the mines and been attacked by the Russian STT while a line of corps swings in behind from Stalingrad and (almost) cuts them off. Germany still holds Rostiva and has a HQ down there. Two armor destroyed and the Germans retreat quickly to the west side of the river. Damaged Russian units try to clear the Crimea but are whipped out by the five (L3 now) german air units (2 Corps 1 Armor destoyed for 1 German corps and one Minor Army). German Armys start marching on Moscow, the Red Army stands Ready. WHERE THE FUK IS THE USA!

  2. Fall 41

West: Attack on Norway pulled back, no easy way to disloge the two german corps with such limited resources, also german subs are becoming a problem, bomber sent to Canada for scouting. Third fighter purchased and Gabralter fleet reachs Manchester for supply.

Med: Minor battles around Torbruk, minor movement. No sighting of axis units besides the 4 outside of Torbruk. All pulled out to russia?

East: Heavy battles near Krusk, central Russia is in German hands, Don river crossed, Riga river line falls back to Leningrad. My only HQ is pushing into Finland with three armys and my air is destroying the port every turn. Southern mines are still Red but the Fortress of Slavespool is only at L5, this will make it very hard to defend!.

  3. but that is the result of a pure air plan. All tech into AA/LR/Jets. Defensively you would do my post, offensively you would do your post - all air for breakouts/kill HQs (the desired end result of an all air plan).

Play the 42 (41?) senerio - they are close to balanced (as must as a nonbid 39) and the air tech is low with alot of combat at the start so players don't have time for the air race. Its more of a 'historical' situation with armor playing a huge role.

  4. Bug/problem:

The southern Fortress hex (Slavespool) starts at str 5 instead of str 10. This means USSR gets 5 fewer MPPs and the defence of the southern mine hexs is alot harder as you have a low level of supply when you retreat units in this direction.

Decress amount of MPPs removed to 400 vs the present 480 as a slight adjustment due to this problem.

  5. It's not a 'fun' way to play but it gets good results. I play several different ways with Germany and have avoided the all air race when I can but its is the best move you can make.

    Example:

    Defending coastline/spoting

    Norway - Northern Germany

It will take 2-4 corps to do this job (cheap at 500 MPPs). But later in the game UK will use these troops as target pratice and move transports around to cause problems. Why not put in 1-2 corps 1-2 air and a bomber or two plus an HQ (EXPENSIVE 2000MPPs) but you can hit back and build exp by bombing London's port every turn. Lots of advantages, if you can afford it.

I wouldn't say its gamey (all air) but its not very fun to play or play against. Use it in compitision games not fun ones, HR against? Also note that all air games are about luck, the player is looking for luck (tech) to provide him with an advantage (and concedes quickly if they don't), its not skill as any idiot can put 5-8 chits in the 'Planes' slots and hope to get more advances then the other guy. It takes skill to win with most other stratigy's (Sealion, Blockade, Russia First, Spainish gambit, Med First, All Med ect...)

  6. Hmmm, I thought we were down to only one or two games left and they were in progress. I guess its the other away around with a few games finished and 2 or 3 not even started. I other words round two will not happen for some time, cool. Thanks for the update, good to know where we all stand.

  7. Holidays and PBEM make for a slow game; but here is the update on the 42 game Iron Vs Fire.

Med - alls quiet, no visiable movement, no combat

West - Both subs attack a UK BBs but do not sink it, counter attack by entire Royal Navy sinks both subs.

Baltic - Sweden DOWed by axis, but they are still fighting with the capital taken.

East - Leningrad is axis and the entire northen front is open for advance (axis have 3 armor, 3 allied corps and other minor units in the swamp/forest region east of Liningrad vs 2 Red armys. The southern front is entirely behind the Volga river with combat every turn in the Rostava sector. Moscow front see's hits on corps by both sides but few units destroyed. But alot of damage and reinforcing each turn. Russia has reached L2 AT.

  8. Hmmm, not that I want to get into great detail on my opinons as why what in #1-5 (everyone has their own opinons, mine are not always right).

    1) Yes, units in Egypt and HQ in UK is too much. Cut the HQ out. But leave in the L3 HQ for France, with the House Rule against the LC gambit before 1940 Germany can work over a few minors if she wish's (norway anyone?) or stick with the French Rush at the cost of Poland.

    2) These two units are really the Canadain Units and the Canadain units are replaced by UK 'style' units so that they can make use of a UK HQ.

    3) Historcal for a majority of the French Fleet to be in the med, it also gives the subs a chance (they are also slightly relocated). Same with the Carrier in Gabralter, Historical but it can move up to help with the sub hunt. Of couse you could still disband the fleet (french) as there is a 10 Str port right there.

    4) I kept on going from 1 to 2 stars. I thought with two Allied HQs at the start that 2 stars would be best. One - Two, doesn't really matter if the UK HQ is removed

    5) Thanks

Any other feed back? In balancing I'm not looking at a complete redesign, I could do that and make a custom senerio (this is getting close). But trying to keep the changes to a min; but to even the playing field while still keeping historcical OOB in mind.

Biding: MPPs 1:8 (USA and USSR) or % Russian Readiness

  9. July 41

Med: minor combat around the city of Torbrok, Axis attacking with one corp and one armor , UK defending with one corps and a 'backup' corps behind the city.

West: Norway is Isolated with UK fleet blockading the southern port and Bremen being hit by one BB, CV, AF, SB. The Canadian 1st army is sitting off shore. Subs continue to raid.

Baltic: Sea battle between German Sub and BB vs 2 Russian CBs. Sub excapes at str 1, one Russia ship sunk the other excape's to UK.

East: Riga river line is holding but Minsk has fallen. Armored battle around the central Russian mine. Axis lose one armor and have 2 units cutoff for two turns. But this is costly for Russia as she loses two armor and one army (no HQ support = defeat). Don river is maned, no crossings. Finland slowly being pushed back, Army cut down to str 1 and one corps heavly damaged. USSR AT L1 - Jets L1.

    USA Readiness 65% (?)

  10. Thanks for the feed back Bill. I'm in a game as allies and Russia is getting crushed (-480 at start) - I'm not sure but this game is far from a pro-alied game. Axis will have plenty of time to take Sweden before USA enters and still controls when the Siberain troops enter the game. With only a few minor tweaks this senerio could be very balanced. Please keep us updated on your games and your anaylsis on balancing afterword.

  11. hate not being able to get my unit back OFF Ireland
Disband it once the captial has reached str 8. Or use a very damaged unit from the battles in France.

. I hate that those subs are next to worthless.
I've won several games with subs as my primary axis force. The key is surprise, in the first battle you need to suck in as many of those irrplaceable ships and sink the SOBs. Once you cut heavily into his fleet you can control the sea and sink his MMPs till the cows come home.

I once fought the game as allies and did what they did in real life. What a shambles
Yea, following history is a joke with this game. Russia lets Germany take over all of Eroupe and doesn't give a shat. USA enters early but produces less then Italy by the summer of 1942. Fighers can fly 400 miles, conduct combat operations, and fly home another 400 miles. Hitler desides when Russia should send there Siberian Troops west to help in the defense of Moscow (I guess he had a 'hot' line all the way to the Pacific and could ring them every day to check on the train schedules). The axis can conduct seaborn operations better then the US or UK. Any defence of Egypt is sicking. Troops that sit in combat loaded transports for MONTHS disinbark with 100% readiness. Fighters will rise up and conduct Defensive interceptions even when they are unsupplyed and under 50% strenght. Winter combat is just as effective as summer. the finish troops should start with 3 bars of exp!
  12. Std 1941 senerio with Russia losing her extra 480 MPPs.

Iron as Allies - Reep as Axis (we've been changes sides every game so no secret to the how or why)

East: Central armys destoryed or surrounded, southern army dinged and norther air destroyed. A good opening move by germany. Russia couters but cuttting off the armor that attacked the air, retreating in the south and forming a line outside of Riga. Finland DOW Russia.

West: Looking for subs and bombarding the corps in Norway.

Med: Torbruk is being hit by axis armor and corps, HQ marching across desart to assist in defence.

  13. As most of us know the game is normally won or lost in France in this senerio. With one or two minor mistakes eather France will fall fast and Germany will have a free hand to do as she wishs, or the allies will hit back hard and she will not surender till the fall of 1940 (if your lucky).

A varity of house rules have come and gone, this would be more of an adjustment to the senerio and use a few house rules.

    1) Add the lowest HQ to the UK and French systems

    2) Add two understrenght (2) units to egypt (Indian and Anzoc troops)

    3) Shift units around. Most of the French fleet in the med, Egyption squadern moved to Gabrather and Scapa Flow (one BBs stays behind). Minor movement of UK and Fr troops.

    4) Add 2 bars of Exp to German HQs

    5) Canada starts activated

    Bid system as you wish

    House Rules:

    1) No landings same turn you DOW major powers

    2) No LC gambit till 1940 (or adjust units so a turn one gambit is too risky)

This should give UK the option of:

    1) Support France to the fullest

    2) Mixed bag - support France and Egypt

    3) Gambit - your call

  14. The first was Charlemagne's Roman Catholic Empire, the second was Bismarck's rule.
Yes this is right, though the First was the Holy Roman Empire the in one way or another ran from Charlemagnes time till the late 1800s.

The second was the German Empire, united under the Prussian King (Willhelm I) by Bismarck.

    The third was Hilers idea.....

  15. 1941 is very difficult to balance, axis are doomed, dont be shy to be unhistorical: Tobruk and Sweden could go to Germany.

Yea, germany is looking bad unless you can turn it around fast (and that can be quite fun, a real test of your skill where you have a chance vs the 44 senerio where Germany has NO chance). At first I listed this as 'slightly allied', you'll note I changed it to 'moderate allied' a few days later.

Sweden: This makes the most sense, both from a historical and balance issue. Sweden was 'assisting' germany so much you could just as well consider them 'gray'. What else was she going to do after all, look at the map  . The problem come's in with the lack of a Russian winter noted by JJ, with those extra MMPs and the Historical USA entery date the Red army is screwed. Better to let the germany player make the call (?) DOW and USA enters soon and you lose the use of 2armys 1corp 2air for 2-4 rounds. Or wait till after USA enters and lose all that extra MPPs and units gaurding Norway. A tough call. (I would like to see a game played both ways and the result -it would be interesting)

If you give Axis Torbruk UK in egypt is screwed. They are weak at home facing a near equal navy, only when USA enters will they have the time/units to better support egypt.

A better solution might be to disband the Carrier at Gabralter. This would not effect the balance of power now but will decress the allies hitting power later on, a good all around solution with the ones listed above?

All in all some good idea and statements guys - thanks - I'll look over the HQ web site -

  16. Tech - Give both UK and Germany 4 chits? You already note Germany starts with a historical Barbarossa OOB for an "average" attack. A normal game provides Germany enough additional MPPs to either buy some more units or more chits, or some combination. 6-8 chits for Germany would be more realistic given the starting OOB.

I went with four chits for Ge and UK

    1) UK weak military and the average attack on Russia show's that both sides were fighting heavily and not investing so much in tech. Experence in past games has born this out, when UK has the opertiunity to fight it out with Germany the first effect is a lower chit count when attacking Russia

    2) Eight chits might quicky create some super units and I wanted to keep them as a moderate level at the start.

I'll need to take a look at the senerio at the HQ. But my idea here is to keep the number of 'adjustments' to a min

  17. 1942: is much more easy to get a balance in this scenario, i think that if u have played it a lot of times, Iron, u could forsee what to do to make it more balanced. Also theres a tourney with this scenario, i hope u guys would find out the flaws and use the editor to make a REAL alternative to the 1939 campaign.

I'm in the tourney and crushing :D everyone in sight, both as axis and allies. I finish a mirror game with Rambo as allies and won and I feel I'm just broke his back in the east and west as axis. So I feel this senerio is already balanced (or close enough not to mess with it yet). But your right, through this tourney we might see a large flaw and fix it/adjust for it.
  18. In the last week or two I've been looking over the 41 Senerio. It looks like a very different game with:

    A) USA Low readness and will not enter soon

    B) Average attack on Russia, Germany will do fine but not take out the front 9 armys and 2 armor

    C) Germany has a navy, Italy's is weak, UK's disperced

    D) UK is in great position (Torbuk, Malta, UK, Gabrater) but very weak.

    Three problems:

Russian bug - due to the 'count' before the start of each senerio russia starts with 480 'extra' MPPs, its best from a balace issue to remove these.

Axis HQs - two in North Aftrica with no port is foolish. Move the Itialian HQ next to Rome.

Tech - USA and USSR gets their starting 5 but UK/Ge/It are all at 0. This would be a good area for the bid (WRONG). Instead give both UK and Germany 4 chits but a max of 2 in any one tech. Italy gets nothing

Aditional Adjustment for long term balance:

Disband the UK carrier at Gabralter; This should not effect the current game play but will slow down the allies in the west when it comes time to conduct operation Overlord.

    Bidding for sides:

Use USA MPPs as the bid value. The highest bidder gets Axis but the value is added to the starting USA amount using the editor.

    Tech Adjustment: (optional)

Air (jets) is left as is, ie no chits and be invested in this tech. Each sides stay's were its at. L1 for USA/UK/Ger - L0 for Russia/Italy

Each power gets one 'free' tech incress in a historical area, pick your own or use these. UK=Sonar L2 USSR=HT L2 USA=HB L2 Italy=IT L1 Germany=Rockets L2 Mostly these are 'dispised' techs but with jets staying as is these could become important.

    Best Factor:

The historical and staged entery of the allied power. Russia has just joined and USA is still a long way off. This is very different then the 39 senerio where USA almost always enters in the summer of 41 and Russia in the winter of 41 (note thats opposite of reality, opps Hubert  ). So in this senerio you get to see a one on one - Russia vs Germany with near equal MPPS but due to the USA being out both side really have to think. "Is it worth it to attack Irland, Sweden, Iraq ect and cause a huge change in the US entery date?". If the bid is high the second USA enter you could see some real problems for the axis.

    .......

Anyone interested in testing this out in PBEM?

  19. Spring 44

Axis as for terms ---- Allies win

West - total mess I hold Paris but have less ground units then Axis. German air kills (L4) kills its self when attacking. UK jets L3 end the game.

Med - USA pulls out of Algeria and through the destroyed port of Gabralter. Ground units are left in the citys but my L1 jets are getting waxed by the german L4 jets. Triplio is a mess of Itialian, German, Russian and UK air = Nobody can move but I have the number advantage vs tech - I'll win out in the long run

East - I keep pushing corps through the holes in his lines - something has to give soon as axis units are getting surrouded!

Very fun game with both side attacking and defending on several fronts.
