  1. Hmm. I was going to post a link here, but its for a site selling ww1 knives so I won't. It looks like a boker ww1 knife from the knifecenter site. Other than the area of the blade just above the guard, it looks the same. There is one on sale in us ebay called a : Boker Damascus Fixed Blade Trench Knife 121918DAM New Are we allowed to post ebay links?
  2. Wow - real dwarven battle bread. Saw some US troops on a cooking program in Afganistan recently. BBC - Cooking in the dangerzone I think it was called. A later program went to S Korea and he nearly age dog. Anyway, while a local was preparing ram testicle and rice the US troops he was with opened their ration packets (like A4 jiffy bags) stood them against a rock and they self heated and seemed to be mighty fine. Anyone tried them?

  5. LOL John - I have his entire AFV Interiors site on CD I realised I was just using up his bandwidth continually checking pics on his site so I just d/l them all over a few weeks. Vehicle maintenance manuals are useful. I bought the Horsa Pilots notes so I could make an accurate cockpit for the I44 cockpit (OFP again) - something I could not have done otherwise. As regards phones on tanks - It was my understanding that they were commonly disabled by tank crews to prevent them 'brushing' against crunchies.
  6. Nice find John.... its inteesting to see that every development of the M1 appears to give it a higher profile and extra weight. From a developmental point of view there are a lot more references for modern equipment than WW2 stuff. I've just started making IDF armour (for OFP) and you can actually get video from inside the vehicle. Getting pictures for WW2 stuff internals is virtually impossible. Similarly the numbers of high detail photos of US troops give the artists of CM:SF lots of detail to work with. And I am learning about modern equipment slowly.
  7. I hope we will be able to place empty / immobilised tanks on the ground before a scenario starts. I think it was on this site somewhere that someone started a destroyed Merkava was only imobilised due to its internal fire extinguisher forcing the crew to abandon. I assume what followed was an immediate attempt to send assets to said vehicle until it could be moved away. Sounds like a nice scenario for CM:SF

I know that Battlefront have said previously that they would like to keep .3ds models and such in house to maximise their follow up module capability but surely when it comes to animations, models and textures there is a community there desperate to contribute. For instance, if you allowed community members to contribute Im sure that there would rapidly form an OOB for Canadian troops 1914 - 2006 complete with textures, models and animations. I can see the argument that if the community comes up with a CM:SF-USMC mod Battlefront will have problems selling their own version but I think you give the community too little credit. Would Battlefront ever produce a Spanish Civil War module, a Finnish Winter War WW2 module. The community might - it will come up with all kinds of non commercial nonsense. We are looking to Battlefront for an engine capable of charging our minds, not a set of artwork.
  9. Its taken me some days to overcome this slur on my character..... By posting, I use bandwidth and money, by lurking I do the same. I am a proud owner of CMBB and am very happy with it, although it gets used less and less as I get older and more addled - or are there less hours in the day these days. I would not presume to occupy such bandwidth without making a contribution to the company hosting it. If CM:SF = CM:BB++ then I know roughly the type of game I'll be buying, the topic (which has transferred to a Peng thread name **beams pride**) was more a reaction to the threads in the forum which are quite frankly scary. I don't know if I'm typical but here's a list of the games I've bought over the last few years..... OFP - from demo / Lustypooh - **waves at Hellfish ** CM:BB - from forums and AARs Airborne Assault - coz it was published by Battlefront. Ironically when I got home and checked for forums I discovered a sorry truth DOH! - same day it was announced. Victoria - Paradox, AARs and forum again HOI2 - ditto and thats about it over the past years, every single game I have bought. If I had never bought a Battlefront product I would not buy CM:SF. Simply because the content of the forums is so, well, grog intense. I know that the PR machine is still in the cellophane wrapper awaiting batteries but the forums give out the message: 'If you don't know what an M1A1yadda yadda you not only are you a fool but it is not worth you even posting here.' This is just a heads up in case Battlefront want to target the game at 12 year olds who want to slot some towel garbed bar stewards - the people who buy 90% of games and boast of penis size rather than people who boast of..... (OT: for some reason the term mannikin ownership leapt to mind here - strange) complete ownership of every book ever written and buy 2 games a year. ............ Back to the Wiki point. If a game has an active and voracious community providing support it is a huge advantage in helping me part with my money. An up to date Wiki is a huge plus here. As an example, BIS (Operation Flashpoint Creators) have produced a wiki for their games which is already providing useful infomation and creating debate prior to the release of another title. If there was a section of the Wiki called 'People who still only beat the AI after 6-7 timesplaying a scenario I would be happy to add to it.

But does your innate knowledge give you an advantage - its like a foreign language to me and I cannot see sitting in front of a flickering monitorwith '2007 Military Jargon for dummies' on my knees and a blank expression on my face being fun. Paradox's Victoria was a commercial flop due to its steep learning curve. Atm, having seen about 3 limited screenshots I worry about CM:SF I know the net is a great resource and all the info I need is out there a few clicks away but you have no idea how intimidating this forum is. Shock Force looks like a military trainer rather than a game. The game might be fine but I never fork out money on software without a good look around forums and this place will terrify the casual gamer. Can I suggest splitting the CM:SF into 2 sub forums Fluffy and Grog so I can stay in my comfort zone. And don't worry about revenue, Ill be buying it as a WW2 version would be cool so I dont mind paying for its development.

Huuuuunh????? Now, I have never served and my military interests lie more towards WW2. I understand what a PzIV is. I know what a MG42 is. Moving tanks and infantry around - no problem. .......... When it comes to CM2:SF frankly my eyes glaze over in these forums. From the recent Israeli/Hizballah conflict I understand how the objectives can be challenging but how the hell am I supposed to know what is going on. Will the 'grog' factor be under the hood. Will I have to comprehend that there is more than 1 type of RPG round? Basically, I've rambled and Im sure that more experienced posters would have conveyed the same meaning in fewer words but how much will a player get from the game if he knows about as much about hardware / tactics as a news reporter.   14. Well you have to admit there are a few things correct in this post. I know this might get me the reputation of a nutter but I too can confirm some of this. Extensive research carried out yesterday - a coincidence as I did not know this topic would be brought up here. While in Borders I found a whole section of Science Fiction books. I can confirm that Science Fiction is real. Any time I run with a riotous mob I am going to bring along a light bulb sitting in a glass of water. The second that thing starts to flicker I'm outta there.
  15. Why not have an option - export save game in open txt format. Then you would normally have a secure file but in special situationswhen required you would also have access to the relevant data. Of course a text output would be greatly beneficial to anyone trying to hack the save format.
  16. It would be interesting to see what happens when the pig is rotated 180 degrees and the Barrett is fired into the 2" steel sheet. Would there be a bigger deflection? Surely a bullet passing into soft tissue cannot rapidly transfer its energy into the spongy body whereas the same bullet striking a solid object transfers all of its energy at once. Its been a long time since my Physics A-Level but I can still remember the Knight Rider episode where KITT was going to ram KARR and I believe the principles in there somewhere. btw, Have we finalised the Space Lobster Weapons as being projectile based rather than energy weapons?
  17. I thought that one of the major reasons for a modern release was technical. If the engine is designed to cope with all kinds of modern weaponry it will not require major changes to include weapons from previous generations. For instance CMSF will include coding for aiming dedicated laser sighted AT weaponry so it will have everything under the hood to do really complex rangefinging and stuff - you guys know more about modern weapon systems as Im sure you can tell (I was going to use Milan as an example but was unsure how to spell it let alone if it was cutting edge 2007 tech) What this means is that when they make CM:Caveman they can use the same code to control the aiming and flight of ass jawbones. This contrasts greatly to what happened with CMx1 which was simply unable to be reconfigured for any later combat than WW2.
  18. I dont know how relevant this is but relating to air gaps.... If you are cutting a piece of steel with an Oxy acetylene torch and you come across a plate underneath you will not cut through the upper and one below at the same time. This happens even when the 2 plates are bolted together with no air gap. Even though the upper plate is effectively molten this heat is not adequately/quickly transferred to the plate beneath it. Not sure how this would relate to effects on armour penetration though.
  19. I think BF should use this as an opportunity for revenue. How a kilted brit swigging from a well known cola brand while surveying German wreckage that includes the other well known cola brand. Is that selling out? Should be worth a few dollars. On the other hand I have just borrowed a book from a guy on Crete with just photos. Translations in Greek / English / German. There is a wonderful photo there of a german despatch riders face with a pair of leather and darkened glass goggles. His face looks sandblasted and his lips are coated with dust. It makes me think "Here am I in this wasteland. What the bloody hell am I doing". (Its by George Panayiotakis and is called 'The Battle for Crete'- Hepaklion 1993) It was bought in a sportswear shop in Crete so I dont know if its available.)   20. The only upgrading I think I am going to have to do for CM2 is to buy a DVD drive. I just can't see how they can fit more detailed models and eyecandy on to a single CD. DVDs are pretty much standard for anyone buying a system and will probably be cheaper to supply a single DVD than 3 CDs. CMAK: The only upgrade I am going to have to perform is to get a credit card so I can buy it direct. (Unless BFC accept switch?) edit: This is actually my first language, sheesh.   21. Could I appologise to Andreas 'Germanboy' Bierman for the way I handled the Soviet troops in his scenario 'Assault on moon'. Not only did 50% of the boat troops stay in the water for 60% of the scenario but I walked all my spotters straight down the throat of some grateful leather clad fascists before they could take part in the game. Is 17% a good score? It was against the AI after all. I am now expecting a challenge from Phasers on Tickle as I think he needs to keep his average up.
  22. I got the CDV version of this game and my first action after a quick loss to the AI was to mod the axis flags to add a swastica. Little did I know the long lonely road I was to follow. Suddenly my next door neighbour, a butch motorcycle rider wearing large amounts of shiney leather, was seen in a whole new light. I have begun to learn german as well (Are capital letters in the middle of sentences different words : sie and Sie?). There is a guy in my street that has built a plastic model of a Tiger tank and his brother owns the video Das Boot. I hope to organise a rally as soon as my uniform arrives in the post. ...   23. np I find these textures great until I try to make something exactly the same. I have 2 images in photoshop - the original and mine. Then, after I work and work I realise just how good the textures are. Calling them a tour de force is not good enough. I salute you both. I suppose at the end of the day the plaster effects you guys both get are down more to working actually on the image rather than just applying a few filters. I will keep trying, after all I will learn a lot more about Photoshop that way. At the end of the day there are few short cuts to quality, its mostly just hard work. [note to self: I'll bet the arcane order of modders keeps its ancient lore to itself, as soon as I learn to sacrifice a chicken under a gibbous moon all their secrets will be revealed...*cackle*]

  25. Its heartbreaking... Im currently making some new Dutch 1944 buildings for OFP and I had the brainwave of looking up CMBB mods for inspiration. The sheer quality of the work really humbled me to the point when I started making a flak gun instead. These look really really nice.
